Had a big weeked of ball down here, so here's a little rundown, getting us to mid May!

Rumors of Brandon Belt's demise have been greatly exaggerated:
Belt's April line of .173/.317/.269, 0 HR, 0 RBI was the most disappointing thing going for the Jays...fast foward 11 games into May (He's played 8 of them), and he's on a tear, raising his line to .241/.344/.518 with 5 HR and 11 RBI.

Pearson gets the call:
Mitch White won the 5th starter job out of spring training, but has been lit up so far this year. After an 8-5 loss against the Yankees on May 2nd, White was optioned to AAA Buffalo. Nate Pearson was called up, and has gone 11 innings, allowing only 4 runs with 13 K's. Pearson's second start was the best of his career, going 6 IP, with 9 K's, 2 BB, 2 H, and only 1 ER, and picking up his first win since 2021.

Closing time:
Jays closer Jordan Romano has now gone 17/17 in save opportunities, with set up man Erik Swanson picking up 13 holds, and no blown saves. The back end of the bullpen has been absolutely lights out.

Overall record:
The Jays now sit 30-9, having going 10-1 so far this month.

Dodgers chasing consecutive win record:
The Jays are hot, but the Dodgers are absolutely scorching. They've won 21 straight, and are 5 away from tying the NL record of 26 consecutive wins, set in 1916 by the New York Giants.

The Nationals took two of three against the Marlins to move to 56-100 on the year. Game 1 was a 6-0 win by the Nationals, and rookie Cade Cavalli, who was snubbed of a win in his last start, was even better this go round, going the distance and only giving up 5 hits, with no walks and three strikeouts. The Marlins were overly aggressive from the get go, and Cavalli, despite making just his fourth start, would earn the complete game shutout on just 93 pitches.

Game 2 was a tight 5-4 come from behind victory for the Nationals, the top of the lineup (Cesar Hernandez, Luis Garcia, Yadiel Hernandez) would be the difference in the game as the two Hernandezes would combine for 4 of the teams 5 RBIs.

Game 3 had the makings of a pitchers duel early, as Sandy Alcantara and Stephen Strasburg were flawless for thre first four frames. Jazz Chisholm would start the scoring in the fourth with a three run home run, and followed it up in the sixth with another bomb, this time a two run shot. Jesus Sanchez would follow two batters later with a solo shot of his own, and that would be the end of Strasburg's day. The Marlins would end up winning 7-1, and Alcantara would go the distance, giving up a run on two hits (both this and the RBI by Victor Robles) with two walks and 10Ks.

The end of the season is looming, I was hoping to be done by now, but it was not to be. There's only a series against the Braves and against the Phillies remaining, and then it will be time to see what I can make of this team in the offseason.

May 22-24: FLAGSTAFF (33-16) @ AUSTIN (30-20)

May 22: Fire Frogs 9, Hops 5
May 23: Fire Frogs 3, Hops 1
May 24: Fire Frogs 4, Hops 1

Austin, TX (AP) - The Austin Fire Frogs cooled off the Flagstaff Hops as the ML East leaders swept the visitors outscoring them 16-7 in the three game series.

In the opener, the Fire Frogs used a four run fifth inning to cruise to a 9-5 victory over the Hops. Rick Singleton went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and five RBIs to lead Austin to the win.

The Hops would jump out to a 2-0 lead in this one on an Art Mason RBI single in the first and Josh Ortega sacrifice fly in the third.

The Fire Frogs would move in front in the bottom of the third as Rick Singleton hit a bases clearing double to put Austin up 3-2. Blip Sanders hit a solo home run in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-2.

Rick Singleton then tripled to right center in the fifth and scored on a wild throw to make it 6-2. Blip Sanders second home run of the game, a two-run shot, made it 8-2 and spelled the end for Ryan Pressley.

The Hops would rally with three in the top of the sixth, capped off by a Roberto Geronimo two-run home run to make it 8-5, but that was as close as the Hops would get.

Rickey Chappell (5-1) picked up the win for the Fire Frogs, tossing six innings and allowing five run son seven hits. The bullpen tossed three shutout innings.

Ryan Pressley (5-2) took the loss, only going 4.2 innings and allowing eight runs on ten hits.

On Tuesday evening, the Fire Frogs won a tight pitchers duel 3-1. Richie Watson tossed six innings to pick up the win, allowing one run on five hits.

Austin grabbed the lead in the third on a Willy Benavides solo home run. They would extend that lead to 2-0 in the fourth on a Blip Sanders two-out, RBI double.

Forrest Owen hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead in half, but the Hops offense was stymied all evening, managing just six hits and one run.

The Fire Frogs would get a solo home run in the sixth from Odell Hansen. The bullpen pitched three shutout innings with Kent McAlpin picking up his 18th save.

Juro Yamaguchi (3-3) pitched well, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out six and did not issue a walk in the loss.

In the finale, the Hops once again could not get the offense going as they dropped a 4-1 decision. Jacob Benedict tossed 7.2 innings, allowing one run on just four hits, while striking out five and walking three, to earn the victory.

Austin (30-20) took the lead in the third on Chris Richardson home run to right off of Sam Herzog. The Fire Frogs would then add three more in the seventh off of a fading Herzog. Jerry Rameres delivered the decisive blow with a two-run home run to make it 4-0.

The Hops would get one back in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Art Mason, but that was all that they could muster as they whimpered to the series sweep.

The Hops managed just 20 hits and seven runs in the three game sweep. Donnie Roland’s 16 game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0 for 3, grounding into a game ending double play.

Flagstaff (33-16) will finish off the ten game road trip with a four game series in Salt Lake City beginning tomorrow evening against the Chukars (26-24). The Hops are just (11-12) in May after starting the season (22-4).

Around the League: Las Vegas scored nine run sin the seventh on their way to a 12-4 victory over San Diego. Junior Lima went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Nuggets as they are now just three games below .500.

Chandler’s Carlos Vargas became the second Chiefs pitcher to get to seven wins as he improved to (7-0), tossing 7.2 innings and allowing one run on six hits while striking out seven and walking six, in a 10-1 victory over Tucson.

El Paso’s Mark Donnellon improved to (7-0) as he tossed seven shutout innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five in a 1-0 victory over the Roswell Aliens.

Honestly, my draft was pretty lackluster, although my first pick is promising. His name is Felipe Escalona and he is a 20 year old left handed starter from Mexico. His current rating is 69, but he has an A potential and a potential rating of 94.

Other picks are:

Roger Gallegos: 3B, 22 years old, OVR 71, D potential, potential rating 69
Carmen Acevedo: 1B, 20 years old, OVR 48, B potential, potential rating 86
Thomas Haussmann: 2B, 18 years old, OVR 65, C potential, potential rating 77

I'm definitely going to be looking for some pitchers in the offseason, especially bullpen arms.

Good to get someone in the first round that should be ready in the next year or two. I'm really looking forward to my draft...I'm going to miss out on him, and intend to follow his career pretty closely, but there's an 18 year old SS that looks like he's going to be a HOF-type prospect. Looks MLB ready, and has alllll of the tools. gotta think he goes 1st overall, which is kind of a shame, but cool at the same time, because he'll likely end up in Baltimore, so I can battle it out against him for a while.

I think I pick around 20th overall, so I'm hoping to get 1-2 guys that have potential over 80. I've been scouting the heck out of guys, and it looks like it's a pretty weak draft, but time will tell.

Blue Jays Francise: 2023

10 days until the draft and the end of the month, so here's a quick little rundown:

-So. Many. Tight. Wins. We managed to rattle off a 12 game win streak at the start of the month, and are 36-10 as of this post. Jordan Romano has been at the back end of the bullpen, going a perfect 20/20 in save opportunities so far this season. Erik Swanson has primarily been the setup man, and has 15 holds so far.
-The Dodgers are tops in the majors right now, with a 36-9 record, and won an incredible 21 straight games.
-Nate Pearson has replaced Mitch White as the 5th starter. White got clobbered at the MLB level, and returns to AAA (Where he has been equally dismal). Pearson has come up and been excellent, allowing only 5 runs through 17 IP, with 18 K's.
-Brandon Belt continues to be solid in May, having raised his batting average over .240, with 7 HR.
-Vladdy seems to go through a weird cycle where he goes full-on power for a week, then goes cold for a week, then becomes a single-hitting machine again, before turning around and having another solid power week. He's currently 2nd in HR (12), and RBI (34) in the AL.
-Bo Bichette continues to be the most frustrating player in my lineup. The defence is always concerning, and I'm either locked in with him when he's hitting, or I'm 100% the other way.
-Loving the fact that the waiver wire is somewhat active this year. I've tried to make a few claims on some fringy guys, but they never make it to me.
-This absolutely feel like a real-life Jays team...beat the heck out of some of the strong teams in the Majors, then struggle in a game that should be a laugher. The wins inevitably come, but it's so tight. Last month, we struggled to squeek out the win against the A's (who had a 1-17 record going into the series). This month, it's the Reds who are exhausting my bullpen. We've won the first two games of the series, but Cincinnati isn't making it easy.
-As I mentioned above, and in another post, we're 10 days from the draft, and I'm definitely looking forward to it. All of the blue chip prospects *should* be gone by the time I pick, but I've been putting the effort in when it comes to scouting, so I'm hoping I can snag 1-2 sneaky good prospects out of it.

Salt Lake City, UT (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops concluded their longest road trip of the year on Sunday afternoon earning a split with the Salt Lake Chukars in a four game weekend series to finish the trip with a (4-6) record.

In Thursday evening’s opener, the Chukars used a six run second inning to propel them to a 7-4 victory. Thor Odinson tossed seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits to pick up the win.
The Chukars batted around in the second inning, sending 11 men to the plate and scoring six runs on just four hits. Derek Hills capped off the inning with a two-run single to make it 6-0 off of starter Alex Farmer.

Salt Lake would add a run in the fifth on a Robby Payne RBI single.

The Hops would try to claw their way back into this one late. Robbie Westbrook hit a two-run home run in the seventh, his 11th on the season, to get the Hops on the board. Art Mason would score on an Emmitt Hampton ground out in the eighth and Robbie Westbrook would add an RBI single to cut the lead to 7-4. The Hops had two runners on and Donnie Roland at the plate but he flew out to right to end the threat.

Emmett Franco pitched the ninth to earn his 16th save and send Flagstaff to their season high fourth straight loss.

On Friday evening the Hop snapped their losing streak with a 6-5 victory over the Chukars. Robbie Westbrook went 2 for 4 with a double, homer and two RBIs in the victory.

The Chukars lead 3-2 after five innings, before the Hops struck for four in the top of the sixth. Robbie Westbrook hit a two-run homer and Art Mason added a two-run single.

Salt Lake would get two back in the bottom of the eighth but Vic Miller came on and nailed down his 16th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Adolfo Vilarreal went 3 for 4 with a homer in the loss with Sergio Pinto adding a double and homer for the Chukars.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying (6-2) picked up the win, but allowed five runs on ten hits while striking out eight and walking two. Oliver Benedict pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

On Saturday afternoon, the Chukars prevailed in a pitcher’s duel 4-0. Julius Matsui and Ryan Pressley each tossed complete games but the Chukars were able to score a few runs and pulled out the win.

Back-to-back home runs from Darell McCloud and Rafael Geronimo put the Chukars in front 2-0 in the second. A Pinto RBI single in the sixth and Adolfo Villarreal RBI double in the seventh made it 4-0.

Ryan Pressley (5-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on 11 hits, but he struck out a season high ten and did not issue a walk. Julius Matsui (4-5) picked up the shutout win for the Chukars, scattering six hits while striking out one and walking one.

In the finale, the Hops got their offense going, hitting four home runs in an 8-3 victory. David Benitez went 2 for 2 with two home runs and scored three runs, entering the game for an injured Leandro Lugo, to help the Hops salvage a series split.

The Hops got off to a quick start as Arturo Mardones homered in the top of the first inning, his seventh on the year. But the Chukars got that back immediately as Pablo Gomes hit the first pitch that he saw over the wall in left to tie it up at 1-1.

Flagstaff used a three-run fourth to grab a lead that they would not relinquish. Josh Ortega doubled home Oscar Aleman and Robbie Westbrook (13) followed that up with a two-run home run.

David Benitez would hit his first home run of the afternoon to open the fifth.

Adolfo Villarreal would give the Chukars some life in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run double off of Juro Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi (4-3) earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing three run son seven hits while striking out four. Sam Varela got six outs and Aldo Osuna recorded the final six out to earn his first save of the season.

The Hops would get an insurance run in the seventh on Benitez’s second homer of the game. They would add two more in the top of the ninth to make it 8-3.

Leandro Lugo suffered an upper back injury in the game and had to be removed in the third inning. The injury was not expected to be serious and he will likely just miss a few days, but the club does not expect to place him on the Injured List.

The Hops and Chukars will not face each other again until mid-September as they have played 13 times already in 2023 with the Hops leading the series (9-4).

The Hops will now return home to face Rio Rancho (27-26) and Amarillo (27-27) to wrap up a stretch of 17 straight days without an off day.

Around the League: Mesa’s Tommy Brewer hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Solar Sox rallied for a 5-3 victory over Chandler to pull Mesa to within three games of the Chiefs in the DL East. Santa Fe’s Corey Barton went 3 for 6 with two home runs and drove in eight runs as the Silver Bullets destroyed Albuquerque 18-1. Barton leads the Mountain League with 20 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Austin’s Pat Eveland (6-2) tossed eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine as the Fire Frogs defeated the Hot Shots 2-0. Kent McAlpin picked his is league leading 20th save as he worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Gilbert’s Steve Heupel went 4 for 5 with three home runs, including the walk-off game winner in the 11th, and drove in four as the Barnstormers defeated Tucson 5-4. Heupel now has 19 home runs on the season. Mesa defeated Chandler 10-8 on Sunday afternoon to take three of four in the battle for first in the DL East. The win moved the Solar Sox to within two games of the Chiefs.

Salt River’s Mel O’Leary (6-2) tossed a complete game one-hitter as the Rafters defeated Yuma 9-1. O’Leary struck out nine, but walked seven.

The Nationals......nope this post isn't going to be about them. I only have one game left in this season, but wow is there some real drama going into game 162 for some other teams.

The Yankees and Rays are tied at 93-68. The Yankees have the edge as they are playing Baltimore in the Bronx, while the Rays are playing in Houston...BUT...

The Astros lead the Mariners by one game, and the Mariners are playing Oakland in Seattle (they did lose to the A's last night, which could keep them from winning the division).

The pressure of one game making you division champs vs. a wild card team is great, but in the National League it's even crazier.

In the National League East, the Phillies lead the Braves by four games and the Mets by five. The Braves were sitting pretty, looking like either division winners or a wild card team, but the Mets have gone 9-1 in their last ten games and if they win and the Braves lose, the two teams will tie for a Wild Card spot. The twist? They are playing each other and the other Wild Card spot is going to the Padres. Can the Mets, who have had a fantastic season and were looking like they wouldn't have much to show for it, will now have a chance to cause some real chaos for the Braves, who spent most of the season leading the division.

Well, it's over. The Nationals lost their last 6 games to finish the season 56-106. Not much to say about any of those games, as the Braves and Phillies had it very easy in just about every game. The Nats fought to come back in several games, but just didn't have the firepower to withstand the talent that Atlanta and Philly have.

Joey Meneses was injured in the finale, although I'm guessing since it was the last game it's a moot point because the injury did not even show up on my postgame or on my roster.

I was really hoping to get to 60 wins, and was surprised that I got this close...the team really came together in September and I have a pretty fair idea of what I want to do in the offseason. I'll be more detailed as the moves happen.

In terms of the playoff race, New York and Tampa Bay both lost, setting up a tiebreaker in the Bronx. Tampa Bay would win 4-2 to claim the AL East, while the Yankees take a Wild Card spot. The Astros win, combined with a Mariners loss, gives the AL West to Hosuton.

Atlanta destroyed the Mets 8-0, leaving the Mets so close, yet so far...again.

The 2022 playoff picture is as follows:

Tampa Bay will play Minnesota, with the Twins having home field advantage
New York will fly to Seattle to play the Mariners in the Wild Card game, with the winner meeting Houston in the ALDS.

In the National League, St. Louis will face Philadelphia with Philly having home field advantage. Philly pulled starter Zach Wheeler early in the final regular season game, and he is scheduled to miss 1-6 days with an inflammed hip.

Atlanta will fly to San Diego for the Wild Card game, with the winner facing the Dodgers in the NLDS.

To be honest, I'm just going to sim right up to the start of the offseason, as much as I love stats and postseason ball, I'm focusing on my own team only.

Okay triple post, but I want to set-up for the offseason...so here goes.

The Dodgers won the World Series, beating the Astros. I simmed the entire postseason and have zero stats, for which I apologize. The Dodgers were the best team all year, so it comes as no surprise that they walk away as champions, and the revenge for 2017 is very sweet.

Some notable players have/have not retired after 2022...here are the most recognizable retirees:

Hey what's up everyone! It has been a long time since I did a franchise update. I am still playing in yr 1 of my Braves franchise.

We are 53 - 32, .624 winning pct., best record in MLB over the Padres (53-33). Pitching (2.86 ERA) and mashing homers (133) are our calling card!

Made a couple of transactions as well. Maybe kinda bored, Traded rhp McHugh(1.88ERA,28.2IP ), Minors SP Tarnok & 2B Miligan to Royals for SS Mondesi. He's struggling terribly but upside is great. Batting .191/.231/.326, 5HR,22RBI & 10SB.

I turnaround and pulled the trigger and reunited the SS Andrelton Simmons he was on the Cubs MLB roster. I traded SS Dansby to the Cubs for SS Simmons & Minors SP Justin Steele. I was not hitting with Dansby (2HR,19RBI in 301AB). The SS that I received in the trades are rated defensively the same or above than Dansby. So I said what the heck and pulled the trigger.

As a matter of fact, the first game I played with SS Simmons he had the GW 2-run single vs the Reds.

Headed back to Atlanta for a 10 game home stand vs. Cards, Nats & Mets.

Overall Record:75-39 (1st NL West, 7.5 over LA Dodgers

D-Backs start August with a losing road trip

There is just about two Months left in the 2023 season and the Arizona Diamondbacks are sitting pretty. That is despite having a losing record to start the month of August.

The D-Backs started August with a four game series against their biggest NL West challenge, the LA Dodgers. The two teams split that series, two games a piece. The highlights in that series for Arizona consisted of Madison Bumgarner taking a no hitter into the 6th inning in the 6-2 game one victory and Carson Kelly hitting his 40th homer of the season in game three (5-2 victory). The Dodgers won game two 4-3 and game four 10-3.

An interesting stat from that series came from LA's 2nd spot in their lineup. In games 2,3 and 4 the Dodgers #2 batter hit for a two run homerun in the first inning of each of the games. The second series of the road trip was a three game set against the NL West 5th place team, the San Francisco Giants. Arizona lost that series, two games to one. Arizona won game one 6-2 but lost the last two, 9-2 and 3-2. Game three came down to the 9th inning and was eventually won on a Rafeal Ortega walk of rbi single.

Arizona will now travel home to face off against the Pirates (41-72) in a three game series that will be followed by three more against the Giants (49-64)

Well a funny thing happened, I thought my franchise saved after I offered contracts to all of my players...so I quit the game only to find out that none of it saved. Sooo....starting from the last day of the regular season...

The Yankees ended up winning the world series. How sad.

Robinson Cano again is a 2022 HoF Inductee

No to re-deal with contracts, although this time I'm paying a lot more attention as I realized I think I messed up last time...offering contracts to a bunch of guys who have renewable contracts upcoming. I might wait and see if I can get them on the cheap by renewing their existing contracts. I've never done this before and I really don't want to mess it up.
