Cardinals sweep the Guardians and with 6 games left in the season, they hold a 4.5 game lead over the Cubs. The Braves have clinched a wildcard spot and the Padres and Diamondbacks fight for the 2nd and 3rd spots.

The Cardinals hit the road for the final 6 games and their first stop is Colorado. The Cubs are in Philadelphia taking on the best team in the majors and have already dropped the first game, 4-0.

Baltimore, Minnesota and Houston have all clinched divisions as the Rangers, Red Sox, Yankees, Mariners and Rays all fight for a wildcard spot.

Cardinals sweep Padres to take first place in NL Central

The Cardinals (22-16) swept the Padres in St.Louis to begin the week and are now ahead in the NL Central by a 1/2 game over the Cubs.

The Cardinals were consistent this series scoring 4 runs in all three games. The oddity is they beat the Padres 4-0, 4-1, and then 4-2 respectively.

Alec Burleson got his bat going this series earning 5 hits with a homer and 3 RBIs. Jordan Walker continues to swing the hottest bat in the lineup as he is hitting over .350 in his last 10 games and leads the NL with 31 RBIs.

Max Fried, Walker Buehler, and Jack Flaherty each went 7+ innings in their respective starts with each earning the win.

The Cardinals will now head to Los Angelese for a 3 game weekend series with the Dodgers.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

        Cubs keep series streak alive

The Cubs have now won nine series in a row. Their most recent came in a 2-1 series victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Game one was a pitchers duel although neither starter went very far into the game. Javier Assad went just 5 innings for the Cubs while Martin Perez went 6 for the Pirates. The Cubs did manage to score off of Martin for a grand total of one run when Ian Happ singled in Josh Naylor who had also singled earlier in the 4th inning.

The Cubs scored a second run in the sixth on an RBI single by Pete Crow Armstrong. The Pirates would score one in the ninth off of Carl Edwards JR but e was able to hold on for his 11th save of the season.

Jordan Wicks was the starter in game two and did not fair well at all. He only made it through four innings as he gave up 9 hits and 6 runs. The Cubs looked to make it interesting in the 5th inning with four runs of their own but Pittsburgh scored two of their own and two more in the 5th to eventually take the game, 8-5.

Game three was all Chicago as they took the victory 10-2 in the teams first matchup with rookie phenom Paul Skenes. Skenes was dominate early on as he struck out 7 in the first three innings. Unfortunately for him, The Cubs were able to get to him in that fourth inning for four runs and after the last one, he was pulled in favor over JT Brubaker who also gave up a run of his own.

In fact, Pittsburgh's pitchers all gave up a run besides Dauri Moreta who pitched 0.2 innings in the ninth inning.

Jameson Taillon too the victory for Chicago in this one (his 16th).

The Cubs will now have a day off before travelling to DC to take on the Nationals (44-90/5th NL East).

I have one profile for me and a profile for the 29 other teams. Everything set to auto. They do everything in the off season except offer players arbitration and they don’t tender contracts to their players. Do I really have to do that for every team? Does anyone know why they don’t do those particular things or am I doing something wrong?

            Rockies Franchise-Year 3

Colorado takes game 1 of the NLDS

Sometimes it's hilariously entertaining to look at the box scores from other games, because you just don't hear enough details about them...back to that in a second, but first, this is how the playoffs shape up:

After watching the Padres beat the Dodgers, and the Jays beat the Angels, the divisions series are set. In the AL, Toronto will take on Texas, and the Yankees face off with Cleveland. Meanwhile, in the NL, the Reds take on Atlanta, and the NL's regular season champs face off with the team with the 2nd best record, the Padres.

Game 1 of both NLDS series took place last night, with the Rockies taking game one against Joe Musgrove and the Padres, 8-3. As much as I want to talk about this one, the opening game of the Braves/Reds series is one that absolutely needs to be highlighted.

This one saw Braves co-ace and huge offseason signing Corbin Burns taking on Cristian Javier, who the Reds acquired at last years trade deadline. Burns struggled through 4.2 IP, allowing 4 earned runs. Javier went 6, allowing 3 runs. Fast forward to the 9th, with the Reds leading 9-3. The Braves offence went absolutely WILD, scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, and send it to extras. In the 10th, Cincinnati scored 1, to take the lead 10-9, only to blow another lead, and allow a 3 run walk off homer to lose game one 12-10. Absolutely crazy!

Both American league series will start today. Meanwhile, Blake Snell takes the hill for the Rockies, while Adrian Morejon will start for the Padres. Andrew Abbott will start for the Reds, and the Braves will start Spencer Strider.

              2024 Chicago Cubs 08/30-09/01

              Overall Record:
              91-46 (1st NL Central/17.0 over St. Louis)

              Game Results

              Game 1
              Cubs-3
              Nationals-1

              Game 2
              Cubs-8
              Nationals-2

              Game 3
              Cubs-4
              Nationals-3

Wake me up when the Cubbies lose

Okay so its just a four game win streak but the title seemed fitting heading into the final month of the season.

The Cubs ended August and started September on a four game win streak and now hold the best record in the MLB (91-46/2nd is the Twins at 88-48 and the Braves, 88-51).

The Cubs entered September as they completed a sweep against the team with the second worst record in the MLB, the Washington Nationals (44-93/worst is the Chicago White Sox at 42-96).

Game three was the closest of the three as Chicago came back for the 4-3 victory to complete the sweep. The last run came via a Cody Bellinger rbi single in the 8th that knocked in Nico Hoernenr who had doubled earlier in the inning. Carl Edwards JR made it interesting as he allowed a leadoff double and the tying run to get to third before he completed his 13th save of the season.

The Cubs will now return home as they look to face off with the Pirates (65-71/ 5th NL Central) and Paul Skenes. The Cubs faced off against Skenes for the first time just six days ago and although he got out to a solid start, the Cubs were able to get to him for four runs as he lasted just 3.1 innings.

The rookie phenom's season has been a disappointment so far as he currently sits at 2-9 with a 6.00 ERA.

Cardinals take 2 of 3 against Colorado and with 3 games left in the season, they clinch the NL Central!!!

The Phillies and Dodgers have better records so they will face the 3rd Wildcard team, which looks to be either Arizona or San Diego. The Braves hold the top Wildcard spot.

The Cardinals will finish up the season with 3 games against the Giants in San Francisco.

Sonny Gray will be skipped in game 2, so he can start Game 1 of the Wildcard Series. We expect a bullpen game.

Rockies survive huge scare, move on to NLCS against Braves

What could have been one of the biggest collapses in recent memory was salvaged by the late inning heroics of pinch hitter Yandy Diaz.

The Rockies, who managed to take an early 2-0 series lead against the Padres, were absolutely baffled in game 3 by started Dylan Cease, losing 2-0 and only picking up 3 hits. Following that, young started Daniel Lynch was rocked by the Padres and rookie starter Dylan Lesko, seeing the series evened at 2 games a piece, with a 7-2 Padres win.

In the elimination game, Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara took the mound against Padres hometown boy Joe Musgrove. Alcantara, who has struggled over his 3 Rockies playoffs starts, dating back to a horrible performance last season against the Braves in the wildcard game, saw the Padres jump out to an early 3-0 lead off of a Kyle Isbel homerun.

The Rockies would claw back in the bottom of the 4th, tying the game at 3, but leaving the bases loaded.

San Diego would regain their 3 run lead in the 5th, chasing Alcantara, and going up 6-3.

Colorado would tighten the game in the bottom of the 6th, scoring 2 runs off of Jazz Chisholm Jr's first (and only) hit of the series. In the 7th, a double by Ryan McMahon would keep the Rockies hopes alive, as Ezequiel Tovar would cross the plate and avoid the tag by a whisker.

Last seasons big relief pitching addition Jose Alvarado would come in and blank the Padres over the next two innings, setting up the Rockies for a 1 out walk off homer by Yandy Diaz, who had been called in as a pinch hitter, giving the Rockies a 7-6 win, and propelling the team into the NLCS vs. the Atlanta Braves, who swept the Reds in their opening round series.

Elsewhere, the Blue Jays pulled off the sweep against the Rangers, and will face the Yankees, who managed to squeak out a 6-5 win against the Guardians, taking their series 3-2.

                    Game 3
                    Cubs-14
                    Pirates-2

Cubs slug their way to series victory.

The Cubs and Pirates split the first two games of their three game series. The Cubs won the first game behind a Bo Naylor two run home run and a bases loaded two rbi single by Donovan Solano. Jordan Wicks was also great as he pitched 8 full innins allowing just four hits and 1 run as he struck out six and walked one.

Game two saw both starters flirt with a no hitter. Domingo German pitched into the eighth and allowed just one hit for the Pirates. Jameson Taillon also pitched into the eighth and allowed just two hits of his own. The Pirates however collected four runs in the ninth to take the second game, 4-0.

Game three saw another masterful pitching performance by rookie of the year candidate, Shota Imanaga who improved his season record to 14 wins and just three losses. He also pitched into the fifth inning without allowing a hit and ended up pitching seven full with just three hits allowed and two runs while he struck out 10. Meanwhile, the Pirates starter, Eric Lauer only pitched into the second inning as he allowed three run homeruns to both Dansby Swanson and Christopher Morel in the first and second innings before being pulled in favor of Martin Perez who didnt peform much better. In fact, every Pirate Pitcher allowed runs as the Cubs slugged their way to six homeruns. Two of those were Swanson's as he finished the game 4-5 with the two homeruns and 7 RBI's as the Cubs took the game 14-2.

The Cubs will now welcome the Yankees (79-61/2nd AL East/7.5 behind Rays) to town.

Twins become first team to clinch playoff birth

The Minnesota Twins have already won the AL Central for their second consecutive year and have become he first team to clinch their division and a playoff birth in 2024. As of September 5th, the Twins (91-48) hold a 25.5 divisional lead over the second place Detroit Tigers (66-74).

Cardinals close out May trailing Reds by single game

The Cardinals (34-26) closed out the month of May and now trail the Reds by a single game in the NL Central Division. The two teams swapped the top position several times over the last few weeks of the month.

Injuries are stacking up for the Cardinals who have now lost Willson Contreras until September due to a broken wrist and LHP Matthew Liberatore likely for the remainder of the year with a shoulder injury. Couple that with injuries to the pitching staff at Memphis and Springfield and it isn't hard to understand where the Cardinals will turn their attention this trade deadline.

Good news right now is that Ivan Herrera has stepped up and taken over the everyday catching duties with right now Leonardo Bernal being called up to be the backup.

Also RHP Gordon Graceffo has done a marvelous job since joining the rotation. Graceffo is 1-0 with a 0.67 ERA in 3 starts thus far.

The Cardinals will start off June with a 3 game series in San Francisco.

Rockies unable to close out series, will head to game 7 against Yankees

The most exciting showcase in sports will happen today in Colorado, as the Yankees and Rockies will head to game 7 (I've been in the Series a handful of times over the years, have won a few, but have never had this happen before!).

Games 1 and 2 saw the Rockies shut down the Yankees high powered offence, taking an early 2-0 series lead at home.

In New York, the Yankees faced as close to a do or die moment in game 3, trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the 8, only to come back and walk it off in the 14th inning with a Juan Soto home run. Game 4 would see Carlos Rodon knocked out early with a playoff ending injury. Clarke Schmidt would come in, allowing a 1 out home run to Nolan Jones, but that would be all for the Rockies offence, as the Yankees would respond in their half with a 3 run bomb by Aaron Judge, followed by their bullpen absolutely stifling the Rockies for only 4 hits through the rest of the game.

The Rockies would respond in game 5, regaining the series lead with a 4-1 win.

Facing elimination in game 6, the Yankees would put up 3 runs off of Rockies starter Blake Snell through 5+ innings, and then another 3 in the 6th against Rockies reliever Rowan Wick.

Leading 6-1 in the 9th, the Yankees would see the high powered Rockies offence step up, putting up 4 runs, but would get the final out stranding runners on first and third, to take the game 6-5.

Leaving runners aboard has been a huge problem for the Rockies so far this series, culminating in that game 6 loss by leaving 14 runners on base.

Tonight's game 7 will see Yankees trade deadline acquisition Zac Gallen take the mound against Colorado native Kevin Gausman, who could be making his final start in a Rockies uniform, as he will be a free agent after the season.

Colorado hosts the game, and will hope for a similar performance against Gallen as they had during game 2, where they put up 4 runs over 4.2 IP, while walking 4 times during that period.

Rockies take game 7, win first World Series in franchise history!

The Colorado Rockies managed to hold off the powerful New York Yankees to win their first World Series.

With everything on the line, the Rockies took an early 3-0 lead in the game, with Nolan Jones hitting an RBI double, followed by Rockies top prospect Drew Cooper hitting a moon shot 2 run homerun in the first.

New York would respond with a run in each of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings to tie the game, and knock Colorado native Kevin Gausman out of the game in the 5th.

With trade deadline acquisition Zac Gallen still pitching in the bottom of the 5th, regular season MVP Nolan Jones would hit a solo homer to put the Rockies back in the lead.

Lefty Daniel Lynch, who threw 6 innings of 1 run ball in game 4, would come in and throw 1.1 innings with 3K's and no hits.

In the bottom of the 7th, Jazz Chisholm would add to the Rockies lead with a solo homerun.

The Rockies would continue to shut down the Yankees offence, leading to the top of the 9th, when John Curtiss would convert his 6th save of the post season, striking out the side, leading to the Rockies first ever World Series championship.

Jones would continue to add to his impressive season, picking up the Series MVP award, while Cooper, who still has rookie eligibility for next season, picked up the postseason MVP honors, hitting .328/.352/.627 with 6 HR's and 14 RBI.

While the Rockies will enjoy this moment, focus will quickly turn towards their roster makeup, as they have a number of players that are set to become free agents, including Gausman, Lane Thomas, Yandy Diaz, Pete Fairbanks, and Andrew Kitredge, amongst others. Given the prospect capital that the Rockies have sent out over the past 2 years, it will be interesting to see how the team moves forward in chase of back to back Championships.
