Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

I agree. Oswalt has essentially nothing to hang his hat on. No strong saber case, no strong counting stat case, no mantle of awards, no real standout signature seasons (though a couple of impressive ones), no postseason magic etc..His strongest case may be winning % (or that he got a tractor for his b-day), but that's not going to do much. I was surprised to see him with a 50 bWAR career though.

Johan Santana's case will be tough. He had the peak and dominance (was unquestionably the best pitcher in baseball for a 2-3 year period), led the league in all kinds of great things multiple times, won 2 Cy Youngs, but ultimately I think the lack of longevity and counting stats (< 150 wins especially) might be too much to overcome.

Re: Hall Of Fame: Yes Or No?

Oswalt has 160-something wins and 1800-something strikeouts and he's nearing the end of his age 36 season. He has absolutely no chance.

I think DrJones has stated the case well for most of the PED guys (including Ramirez): none of them are getting in until the stigma finally wears off. Objectively, I see no reason why the game's premier museum shouldn't have a plaque honoring the game's greatest players.

Which PED user gets in first? Clemens? Big Mac? Bonds?
        Def not A-Rod, lol
Or maybe Pete Rose gets in before any PED user.
What I'd like to see is, in 6 years, to commemorate the 100th anniversary
of the Black Sox, MLB forgive Shoeless Joe & induct him to the Hall.
Then, in 60 years Rose can be enshrined.

I think he was discussed a few weeks ago. Pretty sure it was a general agreement that, yes, he should get in.

I think it's ok per the HoF website itself:

                  --BBWAA ELECTION RULES

                  1. Authorization: By authorization of the Board of Directors of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Inc., the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) is authorized to hold an election every year for the purpose of electing members [or cyborgs] to the National Baseball Hall of Fame from the ranks of retired baseball players [or cyborgs].--

Legend has it that Doc Halladay's programming won't allow him to retire until he finally gets hold of John Connor.

IMO re: steroids. I think the players who used it before they were banned should still be in the Hall because they used a method that wasn't right but was still allowed at the time. Yes it was against the law but many players also broke the law that are in the Hall of Fame. If they were caught after the rules were put in place then it is a different story. Just my opinion.

Also I do not think Roy Oswalt should be in the Hall because he declined too quickly to have posted more HOF like numbers

First ballot. Was a dominant pitcher and could pitch well starting and relieving. Had enough innings and struck out enough batters as well.

So if a player confesses or is found to have used steroids after 1991 (the year they were banned by MLB), they're not Hall-eligible? That would certainly make things easy.

Going back a couple of posts, I really believe that the first PED user to get in will be Barry Bonds. If the Voters attempt to judge him only on his stats before 1999 (The year he supposedly starting using PED's) His statline looks like

                                403 Doubles
                                411 Home Runs
                                445 Stolen Bases
                                1216 RBI's
                                1357 Walks
                                .290 Batting Average
                                .411 OBP

                                3 MVP Awards
                                8 Gold Gloves
                                7 Silver Sluggers

That's one hell of a resume.
