He is a pinch-hitter, that's it...he is one hell of a liability in the field. The Cubs are beginning a series on the road against one of the better teams in the league and Ward starts...

If I were managing, I wouldn't want to monkey with the momentum that has developed during the recent win streak. He didn't lose the game by himself, but still...

I also hope Theriot begins to turn it around, and if not, Fontenot takes over. In fact, starting Fontenot at 2nd and DeRosa in RF seems a heck of a lot cooler than Ward.

The only reason I think he started Ward only because he is still nursing derosa and Theriot back from some naggy/mild injuries....I hope thats why.....and maybe the 36 innings of ball it took to complete a 3 game sweep in Pittsburgh

Rich Hill needs to realize he isn't in High School anymore... quit trying to strike everyone out.

I also agree that Darryl Ward needs to strictly pinch hit except for when he give D-Lee a rest at first base. We have plenty of outfielders that aren't defensive liabilities... we don't need Ward trotting out there once a month.

        Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs

I hear you guys when you say it is early, but I don't think I am overreacting where Soriano is concerned, and to a lesser extent Theriot and ARam...

It is tough to get all 9 guys to click at the same time, but where ARam and Soriano are concerned, things are bad. I know ARam hit a shot yesterday, and Soriano got like his third hit of the season, but every other veteran has played at about the level one would expect... and we need that from them to allow Soto and Pie and whomever else to ascend the curve.

That being said, our starters are fitful...I like our pen, and look forward to Zambrano putting it all together, IIRC, he has traditionally started slowly. I hope Dempster keeps it up, but one of our lefties will have to have a season similar to the one Lilly had in 07.

and yeah, I don't think Hill understands the role and style of major league southpaws...sure some are K artists, but simply throwing strikes and pitching to contact can do wonders.

Pitiful game tonight as were owned at the plate, but at least Soriano decided to go the other way to knock in Theriot. That pitch was damn near on the shoelaces, but we all know he loves balls low. Hopefully with Victorino and Rollins out for tmrw's game we can find a way to salvage the last game of the series.

Hamels just owned the Cubs last night. They could not do much against him. Like you said hopefully they can atleast leave Philly with a win today.

yeah, I groaned when i saw he was the starter for the game...he owned us last year. good thing there is only one of him.

EDIT: Pulled out the win today...Wuertz blew the save, but until today had not allowed an earned run all year, so let's hope he returns to form. Good job out of the pen by Marmol, Wood, and Howry today, as well. I am not sure if we have a lefty contributing much, however...but otherwise our pen seems to be a strength.

Also, a big 'hell yeah' to big Z...apparently busted it down the line after hitting a groundball to 2nd in a PH AB, forcing a bad throw from Utley, allowing Cedeno to score what turned out to be the winning run...love Z's fierceness, hope it translates to consistency on the mound.

So...who loses their spot to Lieber first? Marquis or Hill?

Right calf strain for Soriano before his 1st AB hopefully it's very minor

may be the best thing to happen to us...who knows...

ARam HAS to be moved from the 4 spot, not just because of his awful start, but because Fukudome would be so much better there. We are wasting this guy by putting him in the 5 hole, because right now ARam is a black hole.

Obviously Fuku's protection is doing little for Ramirez, and it is sad to see Fukudome have to lead off so many innings. Though I like that he will be on base so often for DeRosa and Soto, i just don't think the team is served best this way.
