        Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs

Edit: yippee...Cubs take the lead in the bottom of the 7th on Fuku's 2-run double...good comeback after Marquis's 4 earned through 5.1...I think we are committing an error per game at this point, though, Lee had one today.

Through the first 5, Lee/Fuku/DeRosa are batting .377, ARam and Soriano are batting .087

Ramirez is really draggin gass at the outset...I know we are only in game 5 of 162, but let's not pretend that they don't matter and let's not pretend Spring Training settles any issues...

Fuku should break up Lee and Ramirez, take advantage of when Lee reaches base, and let Ramirez take his shots with Lee and/or Fuku on base...his #s show he is very productive in such situation, but I think Fuku will be more patient...allowing more 2 runners on situations than with Ramirez after Lee.

Am I the only one that thinks DeRosa is a good case for #2?

Fuku comes through again with a 2 run double with 2 outs and the game tied. I know it is only the first week of the season but I have liked what I see with Fuku so far this year.

Talk about a professional hitter. Our other guys could learn something from KoFu. Our bullpen still sucks. See if Kerry can nail this one closed.

They don't matter. You going to tell me that Ichiro never had a 5 game stretch batting .067? I know they are different hitters, but Soriano and ARam will pick it up as they always have. It is the first 5 games of the season, and I don't know if you've ever played baseball, but it SUCKS hitting in the cold. Trust me, the weather has a lot to do with it.

Ain't that the truth, I wish Lou would make the rest of the team sit and study films of this guy..

Overall, a good win, not extremely happy w/ a 2-3 start, but like Chief said.....still very early. I do like that the team seems to have a never give up attitude, to me that say's a lot about the chemistry and the mental attitude of a team.

                      Re: 2008 Chicago Cubs

Look, I'm just saying its so early that being 2-3 is not bad at all. Anyone who's concerned now should realize that baseball has a huge sample size each season compared to other major sports. The stats always average out over the year for the most part, so just look at our lineup and tell me we aren't going to do well...

                      Alfonso Soriano - a consistent 30-40 HR guy and a 40/40 member.
Ryan Theriot - not the best player, but hustles and makes something happen when needed
Derrek Lee - don't think this needs anything
Aramis Ramirez - guys a .300ish hitter with a lot of power and doesn't strike out much for a power guy
Fukudome - too early to know for sure, but looks to be the real deal
Soto - look at what he did last year the last month and a half
DeRosa - solid bat handler, can come up with big hits
Pie/Johnson - good speed, decent hitters

Personally, I think the bolded names should strike fear in any pitcher, and we have FIVE guys who can do that (Soto is a prediction, but we know he's got potential).

Moral of the story is that if you don't think they will be successful over the long haul with those five guys hitting every day and a solid supporting cast, improved bullpen and pretty good rotation... well... you're wrong.

Chief, I agree with everything you just said, but I have been a Cubs fan for 26 years....and I have learned to keep the optimism level down a notch ( lol ) That aside, I really do like this team, it's just I hate to see some of the early characteristics being formed. It's a long season and yes, typically the law of avg. almost always pans out.

Good win today, but it is the Astros.

I'm just counting the days until Marquis finally gets replaced by Lieber.

The Cubs offense will be fine........I would be most concerned with the rotation after Lilly and the back end of the bullpen.

They can still win the NL Central pretty easy, but as they stand right now, I don't think they'll go much farther.

I for one would love to see an all Chicago World Series!

Maybe its just that I don't have as high expectations as some of you for this years team... but just remember the MLB isn't a sprint its a marathon.

Give this team time... its not even been a week yet.
