Lol. What a joke. Guy is 5-39 in spring training with 14 strikeouts.

Hey Joe, I get your thinking is unconventional but it's more than obvious that he isn't there yet.

Alcantara is better defensively and is worlds ahead of Baez at the plate. I just don't understand this move to keep him up. So we can see him bat .100 for a month and send him down anyway?

or to continue getting him at bats against MLB pitching while he works on his adjustments. He is really solid defensively, can play multiple positions. That would be my guess for the reasoning. I always thought this was 60-40 despite his bad spring so far.

God, the new TV deal better call for all spring training games being broadcasted. There's zero excuse that so far WGN has had 1 game and CSN 2 games this spring.

The technology is there for every damn game to be available in some format
Don't you EVER read my blog? It's gotten a lot better.

it's a crime if Baez stays with the big club and Bryant does not.

I also feel Alcantara has done enough to deserve a starting spot, and so has LaStella over Baez.

What happens with Szczur? he's had a great spring, it seems.

It sounds like Maddon loves Baez's defense and base running. We'll see I guess.

Alcantara should be the everyday 2nd baseman. Speed, contact, and even some pop. Really solid defensively also.

I'm guessing they want Baez to play and prove himself if they decide to move him.

I'm also guessing when Bryant gets called up, he'll play LF.

Getting way ahead of things here, but just for fun, this is what I want the Cubs' Opening Day lineup to look like in 2016:

                Almora CF
                McKinney LF
                Bryant 3B
                Rizzo 1B
                Soler RF
                Schwarber C
                Russell SS
                Alcantara 2B
                Lester P

                There's your 2016 World Champions.

So you think/hope it'll take Schwarber only a year to get his catching game up to par?
From what I have heard and read, it's not very solid.

                    More hoping, yes.

I believe Theo, Jed, and Jason all said they don't envision him there right before they drafted him. And I guess Kyle looked them all in the eye and said that's garbage. Don't doubt me.

I think he can do it.

Then again, there's rumors out there that the NL might go the DH route soon.

Wouldn't it make more sense to put him in a position to where he can play everyday and not have to look over his shoulder while doing so? Added pressure to produce isn't going to help his cause.

I mean unless I'm supposed to believe that this is still a rebuild year? Because it certainly feels like they are trying to contend right now. Trotting Baez out there for the first month or so it will take to realize he still isn't the answer isn't going to help anything. I also think as a team you are setting the wrong precedent for these young guys trying to prove something. Guy had a miserable stint in the bigs last season, and followed it up with an awful winter ball showing, and now is struggling here again. Doesn't compute for me unless they are hoping he shows something positive so they can ship him off?

Statistically Baez is actually a pretty below average defender. In the larger sample size he's hovering around a .940 fielding percentage. Obviously he played better at 2B last year but it was only in roughly 20 something games. Alcantara has proven to be a much better fielder at every juncture.

Agree with you for the most part. on his hitting though Cactus League games it's hard to take much of that even if he was hitting pretty well imo. I disagree with your assessment on his defense i think that's a strength of his. I think he's very good there. Here's an article on Baez: http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs/cubs-...se-javier-baez

that talks about some of his defense.

Yeah like I said he played well at 2B last season but was in a small sample size so I'm hesitant to call him a good defender, especially when Alcantara has shown that he can play the position better at every level.

I would be inclined to agree regarding his hitting if at some stage he showed a glimmer of improvement or was trending up at the end of the last season and then had a rough go this spring. I could see the justification then, but he really got worse once teams figured him out and he wasn't able to adjust. I just personally feel that shouldn't be rewarded with a roster spot on a team that is trying to win now.

He is young, send him down to AAA and let him figure it out. The pitching there is good enough to where you can assess his plate discipline and ability to make adjustments during an at bat. Regardless of pitching, those abilities carry over to any level.

Russell already looks infinitely more ready than him if we're just using the eye test at the plate.

Kris Bryant is playing LF tomorrow. Hope the game is on TV.

EDIT: And then there's this: Baez made team already? Maddon: “It was not told by me. It wasn’t told by Theo. It wasn’t told by Jed. I have no idea where that came from.”
