Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
Wowwww.
There's an article on The Athletic (I haven't read it yet) about Sevy tipping pitches the last month of the season and in the playoffs to the point where you can tell 90% what he's throwing. In completely unrelated news, the entire coaching staff (including allegedly well respected pitching coach Larry Rothschild) is coming back next season.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Going to read this now.
What I don't understand is how can the opponents know this but no one on the Yankees figured it out? Isn't that a real problem?"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Severino’s fastball velocity was slightly down and I think they said his slider horizontal movement wasn’t right either. It also said Boston swung at his slider like 6-7% less then hitters did all season but that the stat was so easily affected that if they swung at just one or two more sliders it would have evened out to about the season average. Maybe he was maybe he wasn’t. Valid reason to suspect that there is more to it even if he was tipping his pitches.
Regarding coaching staff I don’t really have an opinion on Rothschild. If Sevy was tipping his pitches for that long that much obviously that’s an issue. Other then that I don’t really have a problem with him.
I think Marcus Thames needs to go though. Yankees need a different hitting approach and adjustments. I get that to a certain extent the offense is built around the long ball but they rely too much on it. Often they live or die by it. Can’t really win that way.
Game 4 of the ALDS, Kimbrel helped them a lot in the 9th, more because of how off he was then them. Sanchez just missed the big HR, so they ‘died’. Stanton made a fool of himself at the plate, wouldn’t doubt he was swinging for the fences. That offense with all the guys they have should not be getting dominated by Eovaldi and Porcello.Last edited by Rocket32; 10-12-2018, 03:43 PM.Comment

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
True or not I still think he just wore down over the course of the season and that that was a factor. Saw an article on CBS Sports talking about this. I think there is a video clip that caught JBJ calling out/mouthing a pitch to Betts while Holt was batting. I think that it was a fastball and JBJ was right. Obviously that isn’t enough evidence though.

For whoever can't see the article, with a lead runner on second base, he would check the runner at second, and then on fastballs, he would glance towards third, and then towards home, and on offspeed/breaking pitches he would go straight from second to home and throw the pitch.
I don't really blame Thames for our issues, but I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to going in another direction. Like you said though, we're built for power and led the league in home runs with Judge missing time and Didi missing time and being nonexistent for a month, Gary being terrible, etc. Can you imagine how many home runs this team hits on all cylinders? I just don't know if there's a hitting coach alive that's going to turn Stanton and Gary into slap hitters. I really think Stanton just let the moment get to him in his first postseason. I don't think there's any other explanation than that, he's a better hitter than that.
I have to ask this separately because I'm seeing a lot of steam for this and wanted to see the temp around here:
Yay or nay on Bryce? I feel like people are crazy for thinking this, but maybe I'm crazy for thinking they're crazy. The outfield situation wouldn't make sense, none of them can play center. Is Boras gonna pull up to the Stadium with a 200 page binder explaining why Bryce is actually a gold glove first basemen and we never realized it? If he said he'd play first, does that change your opinion on him? Obviously, his bat, Yankee Stadium, in between Judge/Stanton...Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
If the tell is him looking at third base then it's as easy as telling him to do that for all pitches.
Even if he suddenly started doing it again, the tell happened pitch after pitch, so it's easy to once again go to him and tell him he's tipping pitches.
Because that wasn't done, I have a hard time believing the Yankees knew the actual tell. They knew something was up but couldn't figure out what a beat writer and the Red Sox (at the very least) figured out.

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
Machado is looking less and less desirable while watching this series. Lack of hustle, called out for being dirty. I’m not a fan of the Yankees getting him anyway, a great young talent he is but I think last thing Yankees need right now is another $300 M right handed power hitter that will strikeout a ton just trying to hit HR’s in Yankee Stadium

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
He doesn't strike out all that much.
That said, he seems like an ******* but not in a fun way where you laugh at other people who hate him. Seems like the kinda dude who's gonna do stuff that even as a fan you just go "Well at least he's still hitting...".Last edited by DieHardYankee26; 10-17-2018, 08:41 AM.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

I don’t think getting Bryce makes any sense. On the defensive side of the ball there’s nowhere to put him. Judge is probably a better right fielder, and you already have two or three options in LF (if they resign Gardner). Plus the team already has next to no speed, not sure if it would make sense to have another outfield spot who’s not going to do anything on the base paths.
Offensively I don’t think this makes much sense either. Bryce is a super streaky hitter (with some of his streaks lasting whole years) and has been inconsistent his entire career. Combining him and Stanton could be amazing for a month but then may cost you 8 strikeouts a game for other parts of the season. I think it would make more sense to target a high obp and average slugging kind of player rather than Harper. I don’t think it makes sense to spend that much money to get a player you basically already have (power or nothing, little speed, high strikeout, streaky, kind of guy).

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
It's hard to gauge what Bryce's skillset really is because he's swung so wildly year to year, but the worst he's ever been is 11% better than league average as a hitter. His K rate jumped this year but it's normally closer to 20% than 25%. Stanton is usually around 30%.
AJ Pollock and Michael Brantley might be guys that fit better under your description, Pollock's OBP leaves something to be desired.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
If the team signs Pollock or Brantley and Harper becomes the monster he's expected to be, fans will lose their minds.
Not picking on you. Just saying that I already know fans will prefer the team stay away from Harper but then immediately complain if he hits his potential.

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
I agree but Tex and Giambi were much better all around hitters to until they came to the Bronx. That’s not to say he still won’t be or that he will be a bust by any means I just think they can do without another RH power hitter, with Didi out and Bird as fragile as a butterfly there’s no real lefty bat to put in there to break up that string of righties. I like Hicks leading off better and he still needs to show A this years power was no fluke and B that he can stay healthy too.
Machado in my mind doesn’t solve a problem, it just adds glamour to the lineup imo

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**
As far as the Bryce Harper question, I think he’s a better option being a lefty bat. I think he’s starving to win and would be rejuvenated switching to a new team. Idk what it is with the Nats but they have blown some really promising seasons over there.
Yea he’s inconsistent year to year, but he’s young and his best is elite and his worst is still top of the line. As far as position, heck tell him 1B has to be a part of the deal, then he can rotate from OF to rest one of them to 1B to DH depending on matchups, injuries, days off etc.
Do I take him over Machado, well I mean it’s whatever. They are both young, both elite, both expensive. If I had to take one I would Harper simply because I think all things being equal when both having their best seasons he brings more versatility to the team and solves possible several problems they have now

Just feel like we need pitching man. I like the lineup going forward. But damn this team needs starting pitching.

Yea I hear you, it’s just I wouldn’t go all in on Kershaw if he’s even available, he has back issues that will only get worse and his playoff record is spotty, I think they will get Corbin
Sevy , Happ, Tanaka, Corbin, Mont/Sheff/Lynn really is not a bad starting 5 with some depth also.
