2023 Offseason Thread
He’s getting a max deal from 99% of the league. The only reason this looks “bad” is because he’s played on one team, and he’s the most recent deal. So by default he’s the highest paid player in league history. This will change next year, and again the next, again the next, and so on so long as the CAP continues to increase. Last time I remember one of these deals looking sorta “WTF” was when Mike Conley signed the biggest deal in league history when he got a max. By the time his contract ended I don’t even think he was in the top 10 annually.
With all that said, to have the title “biggest contract in NBA history” and have the flaws he has as a player does look bad from a no-context perspective. We’ll see how things shake out for them. I want to see how this new roster looks, have wanted to see Tatum+Brown take the reigns from Smart for the last 2-3 years now. So we’ll see I guess. If they end up wining a ring or rings it’s a no brainer. Almost every contending team will have at least 2 “max” guys anyways. Will Brown every truly live up to that money, probably not. But Klay Thompson was never worth being the highest paid player in the league at one point either. That’s just how these contracts are structured.
He was always going to get a max deal. Biggest thing is Tatum is just entering year 7 and he’s 24. He’s got like 2-3 years to reach the ages of guys like Jordan, Shaq, Bron, Steph, Giannis when they all got ring 1. No reason to dump his sidekick this early over not wanting to “max” him when every other team would.Comment

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
The "problem" is that the top guys get a haircut at the expense of the lower tiered guys. Brown "shouldn't" be making that because LeBron / Steph / Jokic should be making significantly more (yes, I know these aren't exactly the same contracts and are based on years played in the league and that determines what specific kind of contract is available to you).
But this is what the Union has negotiated and it is nice to get that bump if you can get it as a "middle class" guy in the NBA.OSHA Inspector for the NBA.Comment

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
In the move everyone was anticipating all Summer......
Dominick Barlow returns to the Spurs under a two-way deal.
Gotta think there are plans to give him a regular contract at some point during the season. Sochan might be the only one with All-Star potential, obviously minus Wemby, but I really like the Spurs big man group.
I think anyone of Mamu, Barlow, or Bassey has a shot of breaking out into a legitimate contributor.
And Champagnie is gonna take McDermott's spot as the combo forward/swing forward by mid-season.

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
I get how the optics of it look and sound, but it's not like Boston values him to be worthy of being the highest paid player in league history. It's more so is he a max level guy, and this just so happens to be what his max figure is. Tatum will jump him by next summer.Comment

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
I don't think it can be, or should be, viewed like this though. What finals contending team wouldn't max their 2nd best player when that player is just 26 and an All-Star? The timing, years with the team, all that is what makes it #1. It will be replaced as soon as next year. Before this contract ends supermax deals could climb as high as 80m annually. At that point this deal is then a "bargain".

And like OJ has said, with the cap going up and a new TV deal incoming this deal will look like a "bargain" in two years.

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
My thing is we know max contracts are a pre-determined percentage and still do this. The percentages are already set in place, how many years you've played, if it's with one team, if you qualify for the supermax or not, all change it to a degree but if a player is a max player the dollar figure isn't a negotiated figure. You either get the max or negotiate lower and sign for something else. I understand questioning if a player is/isn't worth a max deal, there is always someone toeing that line. Hell I remember I wasn't sure if Ayton was a max center when he was negotiating his deal. But I've not heard anybody say they don't believe Brown is a max player, rarely is someone qualifying for the super max not a max player.
When you're a multi-time All-Star and an All-NBA team player it's not really a question at that point based on which players get max deals. People are treating this like if LAL knew DLo was worth 18m a year but they negotiated him 30+m a year instead.Comment

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread
"Full NBA memo sent to all 30 teams regarding rhetoric on trade request made by Damian Lillard and his agent Aaron Goodwin.
*
“Recent media reports stated that Damian Lillard’s agent, Aaron Goodwin, called multiple NBA teams to warn them against trading for Lillard because Lillard’s only desired trade destination is Miami.* Goodwin also made public comments indicating that Lillard would not fully perform the services called for under his player contract if traded to another team.*
*
We interviewed Goodwin and Lillard and also spoke with several NBA teams to whom Goodwin spoke.* Goodwin denied stating or indicating to any team that Lillard would refuse to play for them.* Goodwin and Lillard affirmed to us that Lillard would fully perform the services called for under his player contract in any trade scenario.* The relevant teams provided descriptions of their communications with Goodwin that were mostly, though not entirely, consistent with Goodwin’s statements to us.*
*
We have advised Goodwin and Lillard that any future comments, made privately to teams or publicly, suggesting Lillard will not fully perform the services called for under his player contract in the event of a trade will subject Lillard to discipline by the NBA.* We also have advised the Players Association that any similar comments by players or their agents will be subject to discipline going forward.”Attached FilesLast edited by illwill10; 07-28-2023, 04:58 PM.Comment

This part is interesting wording..
"The relevant teams provided descriptions of their communications with Goodwin that were mostly, though not entirely, consistent with Goodwin’s statements to us."
This whole situation just needs to play itself out and be done with. As a Blazer fan I'm tired of all the click bait articles, the stream of speculation etc, he doesn't wanna be in Portland then find the best deal and move him. It's a sad day for Portland fans, Aldridge bailed after claiming he wanted to stay, Roy's knee problems robbed him of his career, took Oden over Durant, it'll just be another blip on the radar while they wait and try and hit another lottery pick that will inevitably want out eventually and they start all over.

'76ers center Montrezl Harrell has a torn ACL and meniscus after undergoing an MRI Wednesday to assess recent right knee swelling following his offseason workouts."
Shame for him. Wasn't likely going to get much PT, but won't help his future going forwardComment

I'm sure we'll read/hear the pundits questioning whether AD is worth it.
