Quick Start Propels Mountaineers to Huge Victory
Mountaineers jump out to 21-0 first quarter lead against Cincinnati
Cincinnati, OH (AP) - Once Noel Devine returned the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, you knew it was going to be a good day for the West Virginia Mountaineers (7-3, 3-3 Big East). And a good day it was. On the ensuing Bearcat possession, Tony Pike would be pick-sixed by Sidney Glover to make the score 14-0. Then, after forcing a Cincinnati punt, Noel Devine used his blazing speed to dash by everyone on his way to a 78 yard touchdown run.
It was already 21-0 Mountaineers at the end of the first quarter after the preceding events.
West Virginia would go on to take a 28-7 halftime lead and would walk away with a satisfying 49-21 victory over the Cincinnati Beartcats (7-3, 3-3 Big East) at historic Nippert Stadium.
West Virginia was actually outgained 339 yards to 291, but huge plays both on defense and special teams set up the 'Eers with short fields propelled the Mountaineers to victory.
"After we went up 21-0 right off the bat, we just kind of settled in and went along for the ride," said West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "We just pounded the ball on the ground and didn't try anything risky as we knew we had the game in the bag as long as we maintained our level of play, which we did.
"Cincinnati is a tremendous football team and Brian Kelly is a tremendous coach. We just came out on fire and ready to play and got the victory."
Noel Devine was the rock on offense today as the junior carried the ball 16 times for 164 yards and three touchdowns on the day. He also, as previously mentioned, ran the ball back for a touchdown on the opening kickoff, setting the tone for the game.

Slow start does Mountaineers in at Auburn
Auburn, AL (AP) - In the final game of this two year home-and-home series between West Virginia (8-3, 4-3 Big East) and Auburn (6-5, 4-4 SEC), the Tigers won once again.
Last year, the Mountaineers controlled most of the games, but Auburn came up big in the fourth quarter on their way to a 31-17 victory over the Mountaineers. This year the Tigers got off to a hot start and led 14-0 at halftime, allowing just 55 offensive yards to the Mountaineers while gaining 181 yards of their own.
West Virginia would tally 175 yards of offense in the second half and score two touchdowns and two field goals, but the 'Eers allowed Auburn to rack up 245 yards and 17 second half points to extinguish hope for the away team.
With just under three minutes left, the Mountaineers found themselves down 24-13 and were driving into Auburn territory. However, heavy pressure was applied on Jarrett Brown in his final regular season game and he lobbed up a pick, essentially ending all hope of a West Virginia comeback.
"Auburn is a tremendous football team," said West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "They have a great size and speed and really played some fantastic defense. Their offense performed quite well, too. They're definitely better than their 6-5 record indicates."
The Tigers held the Mountaineers to a mere 76 yards rushing and Noel Devine only managed 66 yards on the ground as Auburn stuffed his running games and simply gave him no where to go.
Still, going into Jordan-Hare Stadium and pulling out a victory is no easy task and the Mountaineers played well in the second half. However, they dug themselves in too deep a whole in the first frame and that was all it took for the Auburn Tigers to pull out a victory.

International Bowl
Toronto, ON (AP) - Greetings from Toronto, Ontario at the International Bowl, the only NCAA bowl game played north of the United States border in Canada.
After finishing fourth in the Big East, the West Virginia Mountaineers (8-4, 4-3) were selected to play in the International Bowl against the Bowling Green Falcons (9-4), who are fresh off a 38-28 MAC Championship Game loss to 20th-ranked Ball State (12-1).
West Virginia appears to be the heavy favorite in this matchup between the Big East's #4 team and the MAC's #2 team. West Virginia holds the advantage in most areas, but Bowling Green does have quite a potent offense.
The Falcons are led by outstanding senior quarterback Tyler Sheehan, who is completing 64% of his passes for 3,309 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
"We'll definitely have to focus on [Sheehan]," West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart said after being asked on what worries his team the most about this bowl. "The Falcons have a tremendous passing offense and Sheehan is a great quarterback. It will take our best effeort to slow their passing game down.
The Bowling Green defense is ranked 103rd in the national in total defense and 101st against the pass, so expect Jarrett Brown and the West Virginia offense to have a huge day. Even if the West Virginia secondary has trouble containing Tyler Sheehan, the Mountaineers should get enough offense to win by a confortable margin, one would think.
The Falcons also do well in the turnover department, holding a +9 margin in turnovers this year, 13th in the NCAA, compared to a -5 margin for the Mountaineers, 92nd in the NCAA.
The Mountaineers had better not turn it over too much.
While this may be a let down for many Mountaineer fans dreaming of a BCS bowl, it will still be a nice chance to play in a dome in Toronto. Look on the bright side; West Virginia should finish 9-4 for the second year in a row. That's not bad, not bad at all.

Mountaineers pulverize overmatched Bowling Green squad
Toronto, ON (AP) - The West Virginia Mountaineers (8-4, 4-3 Big East) capped off their season today north of the border in Toronto as the Mountaineers dominated the Bowling Green Falcons (9-4, 6-3 MAC) in a 44-13 rout.
The Mountaineer defense actually held the Falcons without a touchdown as the Falcons' only touchdown came against the kickoff coverage team with the Falcons taking back a kickoff 106 yards for a score early in the fourth quarter.
The defense held Falcons' outstanding quarterback Tyler Sheehan to just 159 yards passing in an amazing performance. The defense also held the Falcons to 21 yards rushing on 21 carries, a 1.0 yard average per carry.
As planned, the Mountaineers presented a balanced attack with 31 passes and 40 carries as the usual suspects, quarterback Jarrett Brown and halfback Noel Devine, had great days. Brown passed for 194 yards and a touchdown in his final game as a Mountaineer while Devine ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
"This is a great win to cap off our season," explained West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart. "Obviously, the International Bowl was not our goal at the beginning of the season, but we made the most of it and put on a tremendous effort out there today."
The Mountaineers finish off yet another disappointing season, however, as the Mountaineers finish their second straight 9-4 season and a lower-tier bowl. Bill Stewart will have to show some improvement next year or fans will start calling for his head.

At least in the game (as it was in 2007 in real life in the Rutgers/Ball State matchup), the loser of the MAC Championship Game goes to the International Bowl. I think the winner goes to the Motor City Bowl.Comment
