this cracks me up... I don't get into the infinite argument of what's cheese, if a RB or DB or O'line is represented in this game accurately or not.... this game has powerful players... this game also has ways to stop those players... just b/c there not obviously evident doesn't constitute a flaw.... flaws to me are the game inability to call my coach by his correct name... ever... or the bassackwards challenges announced/made by the refs .....

no offense dunelly.... but your post reminds me of the phrase "dysfunctional family"..... if some1 can show me a "functional family".... then don't talk about dysfunction..... If you had the opportunity to program this game I'm sure your efforts would be questioned as flawed also in regards to how you rated players and their power or lack their of.....

For the record a lot of the running backs did that in 2k4. The running game was almost impossible to stop with the first tackle but 2k5 fixed that. 2k8 is brilliant because if you ever saw Earl Campbell play he was almost impossible to bring down with the first tackle especially when he got through the line. I don't think that anyone is justifying a purchase(that argument is so lame), it just so happens that the legends play like themselves and that's what makes this game so great. Earl Campbell was a beast in real life (which cut short his career because of all the punishment he gave out and took) and he's a beast in all pro.

replace the name ricky williams with earl campbell
that justifies everything right? in 2k4 it was overpowered but not in 2k8 because his name is earl campbell

I've noticed the AI playing Marino from the shotgun formation solely.... with one or 2 backs at his side (for run plays or to block)... the AI never plays him under center.... if you play/use Dan, I think this may be an option for you to consider.... I mean the last thing Marino needs is an extra 1 or 2 seconds.... this formation renders my deadly D-line useless, an being I have generic LB's with Woodson my only legend DB..... I get ripped over the middle by Dan, Joe, Elway and some others that can deal with a heavy pass rush....

I've also discovered that the only way to stop Joe Montana is to run 3-4 or bear (zone) all day long.. he will absolutely KILL you playing man....

PS... have I mentioned how much I love this game lately...?!?!?
You may have a point (or several points) Ram. I'm trying to use Marino using my offensive philosophy, not strictly catering to his particular skills. I tend to have the most success with him in spread formations. But online I've been playing w/my Pittsburgh team, which I've modeled after the current Steelers. I do tend to throw a lot of interceptions with him though, both online and offline (I'm not complaining; I love playing with him).

I'm surprised so far I haven't come up against Rice yet online, and the times I've played either OJ, Campbell, or Gayle I've mostly contained them all. I'm not in the "all gold RBs are overpowered" camp, but I do think those three in particular could stand to be toned down a bit - and gold defenders beefed up a bit. The two players that have given me fits so far are Ditka and the one time I came across Ricky Sanders. The person playing with him was getting him in just enough space to make catches.
HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

The game does have flaws. As they all do. What does anyone buying the game have to do with that ? We all buy broken/flawed software every time we step into bestbuy/EB. As long as it does 90% of what you want, you put up with it till they can fix it.

However the point you are making is subjective. You feel the Backs are overpowered. Some of us feel they are not, How does that come off as a flaw that needs justifying ? Because YOU dont agree with it ?

VC could patch this game tomorrow and make the LB's fast as lightening when blitzing and Lay the wood on every tackle and guess what, Someone like you will come on these boards and post how "overpowered" the defense is because they can't run against it.

There were tons of backs that played like Ricky in 2k4.(bettis, dillion, alexander, etc) Name another back in APF that plays like Earl? Have you ever watch Earl play and I am not talking about youtube but a real game?

Cosign...Telling someone to "shut up" is not what we are about. Carry on with a good discussion.

BTW--my take is that there are really only a couple of backs that are hard to stop...Earl, OJ, and sometimes Sweetness. That doesn't seem out of the ordinary to me.

Look, Earl is powerful no doubt. But if he was toned down, he'd just be Matt Snell with a gold star underneath his feet.

My toughest opponent so far, Mike95 from the OS Vets League ran with Earl Campbell. Earl got his yards, but I got the win, 24-21.

The guy who continuously ran the ball better than anybody else against me was some random in a ranked match. He used Payton and no matter what play I called, he got positive yardage and ran like 14 times in a row. But I still won because there are ways to counter everything in football and that's the case here.

Playing good defense is a combination of a lot things including practice, patience, proper play selection, pre-snap adjustments, selecting the right personnel for the type of defense you run, be able to properly read an offense, etc.

edit: in my most recent ranked match, I played a guy who used Marcus Allen as his running back. Allen's line after game: 8 carries, -1 yards.

Pro Football Prospectus rated the Greatest running back seasons of all time. I will give the top five:

                                1. OJ 1975, 1,817 yards, 5.52 avg

                                2. Marshal Faulk 1999, 1,381, 5.46 avg

                                3. Barry Sanders 1997, 2,053, 6.13 avg

                                4. Earl Campbell 1980, 1,934, 5.2 avg

                                5. Thurman Thomas 1991, 1,407, 4.89

                                6. Leroy Kelly 1968, 1,239, 5.0 avg

These guys put up monster numbers in their prime. So, if you can hold these guys to under 5 yds a carry you did better than the NFL.
