Yep, they still need to decide exactly how much to pay them, and how long they should stay under the original contract. Not really something that can be quickly ironed out in a day.

The pay isn't the problem, as the teams and players want them to make less so the FAs get more money. The problem is the length of contracts. The NFLPA wants shorter and the teams want longer. Shorter gets the rookies into FA quicker, getting the NFLPA more money.

It really doesn't get the NFLPA more money. Its just how it is dispursed. The pie is x amount of revenue. Salary cap is y.

The individual player has the opportunity to get the big contract a year sooner, but that has a ripple effect on other contracts. The teams will spend what they want/required to spend. When one player gets a big contract, someone else won't be getting as much.

As long as contracts mean absolutely nothing in the NFL I will be on the players side in terms of shorter contracts for rookies.

          1. If a contract is signed you should be required to pay the player regardless of what happens (besides things that would make the contract void like jailtime) but if you cut a player you should still be required to pay them the full length of the contract.

          2. We wouldn't be stuck seeing these stupid camp holdouts when players who are picked in the third round and play like first overalls hold out cause they won't have to wait 5 years for a new contract. Granted they signed the deal in the first place, but CJ should not be making 700K for 5 years as the best back in the league (example not saying he is or that that's his contract) when the length of a RB's career is a window of 6-7 years.

Yeah the Brees comments were old by the end of yesterday, the union since leaked that they aren't close and it's believed little progress was actually made yesterday.

PFT believes it's the union fighting via PR the overall notion that a deal is 'close' (which they blame the owners for leaking themselves), which creates public pressure and they think would potentially create a situation where some bitter pills would have to be swallowed in the 11th hour just to get things done.

By saying it's not close it gives the impression they're willing to keep going further.

There's talk a report this morning that the players may seek an injunction in the lockout for the rookies and free agents. They would then be locked back out one by one as contracts were signed. This was one of the loopholes in the 8th circuit ruling. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...s-free-agents/

Is it just me or should this take about 5 seconds? You figure owners don't want to pay the rookies 50 mil guarenteed anymore, and the Vets don't want these guys comin in making that much.

With a raised NFL Salary Floor (Team minimum salary) that would mean that with less money being spent on rookies it would HAVE to be paid on 3+ year veteran players. How could this possibly be an issue? I am so lost as to why these guys aren't getting this done in an hour.
As mentioned, the issue is with the number of years. Last I heard, the owners want the rookie contracts to be 5 years long. The perfect example of why this would be problematic is Chris Johnson. Can you imagine him being tied into his rookie deal for 5 years? How about after all rookie contracts are dropped down to an even lower number? The players are arguing that you're getting into lowering vet contracts that way, and want 4 years. I think this one is obvious that the players are right so I'm also thinking this is the owners trying to hold things up to get a compromise on something else.

They must agree! I can't go without football!!!!

Even if the Cowboys disappoint me every year, I would rather watch in disappointment, than at all.

I would like to see the owners open up the doors once the players have re-certified the union. So camps can start and guys can start preparing for the season. The sooner the better.

Chris Mortensen from ESPN said that we could get a deal in 24 to 48 hours.

Mortenson, Clayton, and Sal all saying on ESPN Radio that it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect an agreement tomorrow, or if not then incredibly soon, with it finalized in writing next week.

As one emailer on ESPN Radio said, "We're at the goalline. Do not fumble the ball now, NFL and NFLPA."
