Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
My local pro shop had a sale on golf balls a week ago. I stocked up. I figure when I get back out there next Spring, its going to take a dozen or so golf balls to find my groove/swing again....I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I'm psyched. Went from a 15.2 at the start of July, and now a 13.1!
A lot of golf left. I just have to stay consistent and keep my short game sharp. My goal is to be single digits for the first time in a very long time.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Last week I overdid it, played 27 holes on Saturday(and hit 2 buckets at the range) and attempted 18 on Sunday. I played a pretty decent front 9, couple pars, couple bogeys, and even a birdey. On the first hole of the back 9 I started feeling my arm get tired and by the 14th hole my elbow was in such pain I couldn't swing the club. I was pretty bummed because I was playing good and a very nice course.
So I took all week off to rest my elbow and by Thursday it felt pretty good. While I was working Thursday afternoon I had a bit of a mishap and injured my leg, a empty pallet I had leaned on another pallet (big no-no in warehouse work) fell back on my leg. I have a nasty bruise and missing a fair amount of skin on top of the bruise. So it looks like another week of no golf.My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
70 rounds in, with almost 3 and half months left in the season. My last round last year was November 15th. Had a great lesson on Thursday with my coach. I left with my swing back in order and great swing thoughts.I am the lesson after the fall.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Got out yesterday for the ever-popular "playing hooky on a Monday afternoon" round of golf. Was all over the place on the range, really struggled on the front, but by the back 9 I was playing par-with the occasional bogey golf. So I left the course feeling pretty good, but still irritated by my inability to put a complete 18 together.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I am in that spot right now where it seems like I am having just a terrible round, but when I add up the score they are not that bad. Headed for holidays to the mountains so going to get some "Mountain Golf" in and see how that goes. I don't like trees so it should be fun.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Today was my birthday so a buddy and I went to one of the better courses in the area that happens to be a public course(state owned). It was easily one of the best maintained courses I have played, easily the best public course I played. My only gripe was that it had the public course BS I hate, Crappy players with no golf etiquette and piss poor golfer tee time management. I feel like 4 hours for 18 holes is the standard, even on a busy Sunday morning. We played the front nine in 1:50, when we go to tee off at the back 9, there were two foursomes that were allowed in front of the party we were playing behind on the front 9! I was beyond pissed, I allowed myself 4:30 to get 18 in and we only got 16.
I've been real close to pulling the trigger on getting a membership to a private course and I think I am there for next year. Between with the lack of etiquette on my public course, the constant weekend tournaments that shut the course down, and the weekday leagues, I am over it.My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I couldn't possibly agree with the above post more. The level of BS tolerated at public tracks these days is well over the line. It's almost like at some point in the past decade or so, the unwritten agreement among golfers and courses to have mutual respect has completely broken down.
I assume that since the golf industry has been struggling, courses will do anything to keep their rounds up so they'll tolerate basically anything from paying customers. This, paradoxically, is worsening the problem, because real dedicated golfers end up playing less (or at least less on those courses that tolerate more BS) because of the rock-bottom level of service and standards at the courses.
Look, I'm not saying you have to roll up in a chauffeured Bentley and place your monocle in the breast pocket of your tucked-in Oxford shirt before each round. I'm saying there should be standards for decency amongst golfers, including generally gentlemanly comportment (e.g. maybe don't allow people to blast music from their carts and holler at their buddies from 2 fairways over like they're in a bar), and most of all, an agreement that 4-hours is the max for any 18-hole round.
Maybe you don't need to line up your putt from 15 different angles like the US Open title is on the line. Or, if you are going to do that, for heaven's sake do that while other people in your group are putting, don't stand there until 3 other people putt, and THEN start lining up your putt. I partially blame TV coverage of golf for this phenomenon.
If you take a quick 1-2 minute look around a hazard for your ball and don't find it, drop it near where you think it went in (rough approximation is fine) and move on.
You probably can't hit the green from 300 yards out if your drive went 225. You don't need to wait for the green to clear to hit your second shot. You won't hit into the group in front, and if you do, they will understand it was a freak shot. I've done it accidentally once or twice and every time the group has been understanding after a polite apology.
Be ready to hit!!!! The thing that drives me the most nuts on courses where carts are common is when 2 guys in a cart drive over to Player A's ball in the left rough, wait for the green to clear (never mind neither of them has any reason to believe they can hit the green from there...see above), Player A hits, then they drive over to Player B's ball in the right rough and take all the time in world for Player B to hit. You would think it'd be common sense that while your waiting, you drive over to Player A's ball, drop him off with a few clubs, then Player B drives over to his ball while you're still waiting, and both players can play their shots in rapid succession after the group in front clears.
Finally....course rangers need to actually do their jobs. Or, at a minimum, do SOMETHING. They drive around, but never seem to ask anyone to keep pace or do anything about excrutiatingly slow days. They don't have to be jerks about it - I've been in groups that have been asked politely by rangers to get back into position, and have never been offended (more like embarrassed!). I actually appreciate it.
OK, rant over....but among the many things hurting golf IMO, pace of play at public courses has got to be near the top of the list.Last edited by pietasterp; 08-17-2017, 03:02 PM.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Well after 10 years of playing this fine game, I finally was able to shoot par, and on the birthday none the less! Girlfriend took me to a course I hadn't played before; bless her heart it ended up being a little dog track about 5900 yards with the usual gimmicks you see on these type of courses. Birdied 18 to get back to and E 71. Cool part is she caught the putt on video, knowing this was a big occasion for me.
She picked me up a new putter; Cleveland Huntington Beach 3 (very nice flat stick) and a new 52 to round out my wedges. Both were critical additions as my putting has been an absolute mess this year, and I think just a change in equipment is enough to get my mind back.
I play 4 wedges now, A (49), 52, 56 and 60. That 52 really helps me bridge the gap between the A and 56, I was relying on some wild choke down 3/4 swings for anything 105-115 out.
Taking a little break after a long weekend of birthday golf, but excited to get back out and see where I can go from here.Twitch: Goblue81188Comment

Also, after 7 putter changes, I've finally modified my TP Collection Juno enough to have it working so well. Rolled in five 15+ footers last night. Not sure I could putt better with anything else. Just need to dial in the wedges, and I'll be having a strong fall run.St. Louis Cardinals | Milwaukee Bucks | Los Angeles Rams

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Agree w/ the above wholeheartedly. Only problem is it's highly dependent on where you live. Many places - mostly the coasts (which is always where I happen to be, on either one or the other) - you basically have no options like that. You either win the lottery and join one of the ultra-exclusive clubs, or you wallow in the mosh-pit with the unwashed like everyone else. The 'affordable private club' doesn't exist in NYC, SF, LA, etc...
Some things are just better in the Midwest....Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Posted my best 18-hole round, and of course right as the summer is winding down....
42 + 42 = 84.
The crazy thing is I got 2 "7s" on the back, but offset it with 5 straight "4's". Definitely left about 3-4 shots out there, but when is that ever not the case? I was a lot closer to breaking 80 than I ever thought I'd be though - 1 of those edge-burners and 1 of those lip-hangers goes in, and I'm flirting with a personal milestone.
What's also interesting is that I basically never hit a really good shot all day. I hit a boatload of 'mediocre' shots that stayed in play, and then never really 3-putted. I didn't even realize I was having a good day (for me....I'm not as good as you guys in this thread are!!!) until I was in the parking lot.
Only problem is now I know the 70's are realistically within reach on the right day.....which opens up a whole new can of obsession.....Comment

90th round of the season is in the books and it was horrible. Every drive was a miss to the right. It was horrible and frustrating. Normally I can right the ship, but I just didn't have it in me today.I am the lesson after the fall.Comment
