    Re: Xbox One

I'm old-school. I just don't see the appeal of the Kinect. I prefer using a controller. I see nothing wrong with Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and Youtube on my PS3 or 360. I feel like this is where Microsoft has gone wrong. They've alienated people like me that don't really care about the entertainment side. I'm probably a small minority of the audience but they still have alienated me.

My plan right now is to wait and see on the Xbox One. I've decided I'm going with the PS4 at launch. If the dedicated servers and cloud stuff takes off with the Xbox One then I might buy one a couple years down the road. If it doesn't, I see very little reason to buy one. I'm really hoping Sony can work something out to bring WatchESPN to the PS4. That would be huge.

See you said you dont care about the entertainment side but then say you hope sony can bring watchESPN over to the PS4. Thats the thing with the Xbox One. Its a entertainment hub. If your really not into it you do not have to use those features you can just game. What is it that you truly dislike about the Xbox One ? is it that the Kinect is bundled in so it cost a extra $100 or is it that it has entertainment features that you do not have to use ?
It’s easier to do the right thing, than to explain why you didn’t.

Basically, I like apps the way they are now on PS3 and 360. There's nothing wrong with them. What I don't like is the fact that WatchESPN is only available on the Xbox. But I still have my 360 for that so it's not that big of a deal. Now if Sony can figure out a way to get it on PS4, then I don't see a need to even renew Xbox Live anymore.

I don't like the fact that Kinect is being forced upon me. The fact that I can't disconnect it or buy an Xbox One without it. It's great for people who want it but I don't want it. I don't care about saying a voice command to cut my console on or to watch TV. It's so unnecessary. If I buy an Xbox One, I'd simply cut Kinect off whenever I could since I don't care for having a camera pointed at me recording at all times and because I wouldn't be using any of its features.

I understand why Microsoft is bundling the Kinect and why they don't want people disconnecting it but I don't agree with it and it's driving me away from them. I don't like the PS Eye any better but at least Sony isn't forcing me to buy one and have it connected at all times. I like having freedom and choices, something which Microsoft has been moving away from.

Sony not being able to get the most popular video related apps (namely HBOGo) ensures we'll be keeping our 360 hooked up in the living room even after we get our PS4 unless something changes or the former is replaced by an Xbox One.

I understand why they bundled it so that devs can develop features for it knowing every xbox one owner has one. However I dont know why they would decide to make it mandatory to be connected. I agree not everybody wants to use voice and motion controls.

Anything else besides watchESPN and HBOGo that the Xbox One has exclusivity on?

I had just assumed those two were on ps4 as well.

Well the presumption is app parity with current gen. 360 has UFC also, while PS3 offers a standalone Sunday Ticket package. I wonder if MS's new partnership with the NFL will extend to DirecTV and make that available on the Xbox One too. Hmm. If you're watching Sunday Ticket through PS4 which is going through your Xbox One I wonder if the NFL app stuff will work

                  Re: Xbox One

Latest leak from NeoGAF's favorite insider:

Indie games have to go through the (practically dead) Win8 metro app ecosystem, of which Microsoft takes a mandatory 30% cut and there will be arbitrary chop down of the system specs to restrict indy devs to just 3 gigs of memory. Wow.

The question before this leak was where indie games were going to fall - it was assumed coming out of BUILD that they were going to be shoved into the Windows OS part of the system, but Microsoft never bothered to make it clear, instead just saying "you can make a cross-compatible app for W8, WP8, and Xbox One, guys!" and not mentioning any real specifics.

This essentially verifies that they're still requiring a publisher for an indie dev to actually use the game-dedicated portion of the system (Xbox Live Arcade).

I wonder if someone self-publishing their game to the app store is stuck with the 10% of the GPU that is supposedly all that's available to that part of the system as well.

To me, that restriction has EA's fingerprints all over it. They do not want their AAA titles (or even newly acquired licenses like the TERRIBLE Plants vs. Zombies 2) to compete with the next voxel art phenom. Or, it could be because Microsoft is trying to coax the more ambitious devs to try and sign a publishing deal with them for more privileges.

UFC and WWE are also exclusive. I know there are a ton of apps I've never used that aren't on PS3. The 360 has a ton of apps. I use probably 10% (or perhaps even less) of them.

There are two 360 app that I would love for the PS4 to have... NBATV and ESPN3.

Microsoft Set To Announce Self-Publishing, New Certification Process

The cacophony of naysayers drove Microsoft to rethink its position. Under the new directive, developers can set their own release dates and pricing, which should make the erratic nature of Xbox Live releases less problematic for creators who want to handle their own marketing.

Additionally, we have learned that Microsoft is drastically overhauling its certification process. The company will use a model similar to iTunes and is targeting a 14-day turnaround for an approvals. Instead of extensive code checking, the company will be looking for terms of service violations and significant bugs.

And Microsoft has just confirmed this report. They just knocked out the biggest thing I hated about their policies from the day the system was announced.

Crow? A company turns an about face because of negative opinion and there's crow to be had?

That may be true, but many people felt this wouldn't happen. Many people felt MS would totally turn their back on the Indie Community and basically abandon them, or continue their draconian policies.
