Re: What movies have you seen recently?
These days it's hard to come across a good trailer that knows how to show just enough. I made mention that Side Effects was an example of a recent film that had the right kinds of things revealed in its trailer. Batman v Superman is a terrible example though, for example.
I try and avoid trailers like the plague for films that I know I want to watch. I know very little about the upcoming Jason Bourne, and I hope to be amazed!Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Same is true of horror movies and scary parts, action movies and set pieces, drama movies and character twists, etc.

The Shallows. Heard good things about it, ended up a bit disappointed. The shark effects are mostly great and the scenery is nice, but it was nothing special and the use of pop music in the soundtrack was an awful choice. I'd give it a C.NCAA: Michigan Wolverines

Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition
Well, for all the mixed reviews, I actually liked most of the movie. Affleck wasn't too bad for me, enjoyed Henry Cavill as well. The two actors that made the movie for me were Gal Gadot and Jessie Eisenberg. For me Eisenberg stole the show. He was amazing as an insane Lex Luthor and the good type of villain you love to hate. On the plot side:
SpoilerI feel that parts were hit or miss. The whole bit about Batman branding criminals and Clark/Superman tracking him down felt odd to me. Doomsday was awesome as well. I was surprised about the loss of life shown and eluded to at the start and with the Doomsday fight at the end. Skyscrapers going down here, whole congressional testimonial rooms getting blown up and etc.
The fight scenes were solid, especially the Batman vs Superman fight.
Overall I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It's a different take than Nolan's Batman, but I actually liked Zac Snyder's grittier take. I like the older, jaded Batman. Not sure if I'd watch Affleck in a stand alone Batman, but I'd definitely check out a sequel to this.Comment

The Secret Life of Pets - 5/5
This is right up there with Zootopia for me. Just an absolute great movie. A must see for any animal lover.

In comparison, does Pets have more of a hilarious theme in comparison? How is it compared to Over the Hedge as far as funny moments?

Going to see it sometime this week. Now you mention Zootopia, which I enjoyed, however it also had a more dramatic tone with a little less 'super hilarious' moments.

It wasn't bad other than the typical drunk *******s on a military base who try too hard to be heard by the entire theater.Comment

The Last of the Mohicans - great scenery but tbh, I thought Daniel Day-Lewis was pretty terrible in it. Idk if it was him or the script but all of his lines felt forced and unnatural as if I could tell he was acting.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
A Free Soul (1931): Not a bad movie if you can get past the somewhat stilted acting and Norma Shearer's over wrought emoting. Nonetheless this movie boasted Lionel Barrymore and Norma Shearer and was the movie that put Clark Gable on the map. Leslie Howard didn't have very much to do but his actions toward the end of the movie was pivotal. (Mr. Howard would be best remembered today for his sensitive role in The Petrified Forest and a brother of Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind) There are some interesting points to this film as Barrymore and Shearer play father and daughter with Barrymore's character being based on the father of the writer of this film's source material. Said father also became the basis for Perry Mason.
The story is pretty interesting though I won't go into it but needless to say things get pretty dramatic at the end. Barrymore won best actor for his portrayal as the alcoholic lawyer and Shearer provided plenty of sexiness as did Gable who was the gangster she falls for. I will leave you with this though:
Johnnie Cochran's demonstration of the glove not fitting OJ during that trial....It was a trick used in this movie except with a hat! I wonder if Johnnie was into classic film?
This is well worth watching if you can get past the issues above.
The Monster Walks (1932): Okay, the acting isn't the greatest as this comes from a poverty row studio but it entertained me nonetheless despite the ending being seen a mile away. This was one of those Old Dark House horror/mystery films that were so popular in the decade however this one was pretty limp in that regard as it was just a mystery flick with the "monster ape" being a complete red herring. Eh, not something to go out of your way to search out. Oh, and while i'm one of those people who can put stereotypical racist portrayals in context it still galled me how the chauffeur for one of the characters was a total buffoon. The movie sadly ended on a "joke" at the expense of the entire African American race. (Hint: it had to do with him and the ape)Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
