Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

made a few upgrades to my PC. picked up an ASUS DirectCU II R9 290 for $450(snagged it before it went back up into the $530 range). It's replacing an ASUS DirectCU II 7770 2GB. so far loving it. Tomb Raider benchmark was hitting the 60FPS lock I guess it is on by default. it ran min/max/average of 60.0 when I ran the benchmark. that was everything maxed out running 1080p(AA might not have been maxed, don't remember). Sleeping dogs was more around 52 fps average I believe. haven't benchmark in other games or applications yet.

now to help my CPU keep up, picked up Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO and plan to overclock my AMD FX-6300. I've seen others overclock this same processor to 4.5Ghz with this cooler without any issues, I'll probably aim around 4.2-4.3Ghz first though, I don't typically tend to stress out my computer parts. It'l depend on how well the cooling is.

picked up a 2TB HDD to replace a 1TB HDD I had for installed games. It was starting to get full, had less than 100 GB remaining. I'll swap out that 1TB drive for an older 500GB Sata II drive I still have that just has ISO files on it from software/games I created an image for(so I never have to use the disks again). it wasn't really getting full or anything, but i might as well get rid of it as it's a slower drive.

a few weeks ago picked up a 4TB seagate external drive that I now use to make backups of all my computer drives.

Glorious looking card. Still cheaper then a work station card that has the same amount of memory.

Saw that cards prices went back down again a bit. Guessing that had to do with that whole Mt. Gox thing?

Are sound cards worth the money anymore? I'm looking at around 100-110$ budget, but not sure it would be that big of an upgrade over my onboard.

I don't think so unless you have some real grandiose plans.

What are you hooking into? I've never done any research into them, but when I found out when I want to hook up to my home theater surround sound I can just get 5.1 audio from the video card via HDMI.

Yeah, nothing special. Mainly for gaming and home theater.

I wouldn't bother if you are just going to a little 2.1 desktop system (I'm cheap though). Maybe find an equalizer to help with what you have. I listen to music out of Spotify all day and downloaded this add-on. Night and day difference when you get it tuned to your liking. Same when I listen to stuff where an equalizer is also available.

                      *edit*
I skipped over where you said for gaming and home theater so you can just ignore me -_-

Congrats!!! You must be super stoked!

My current build was back in 2008. So mine is 6 years old and while I still run a lot of games on high, I am starting to notice I need to upgrade in next year or so. Going to leave intel and go back to AMD this time around. That FX-8350 8 core at 4.0ghz has my name on it

I'm probably the only one in this thread with the 8350 and I will warn you, if you're trying to overclock, don't expect much. I got mine up to 4.4 GHz and it's not truly stable I'd say. That sucker gets HOT in Prime95 and BurnTest. I've had to cut back and only run it on half the cores and it'll last. And really, who is going to be pushing all 8 cores at 100% like that long term. Not for awhile still I'd say unless you are intentionally stress testing. Even with the hyper 212 evo and a push-pull fan setup, it will get hotter than the sun.

I have an 8350 as well, been running stable @4.5 on air since the install. Would probably have to invest in a good water cooling solution beyond that though.

Truthfully I'm not into OCing, I'd rather it run stable as hell and it will still be plenty fast enough.
