Dumb question, but I can just run around, find different cities, people, quests, etc without following the quests for my father? Similar to Oblivion, I guess?

Yep. Don't really have to do anything (Except die I guess if you run into something you aren't strong enough to compete with)
However I believe as you do the main quest more side quests open up....

Cool...and yeah, I'm gonna go through the main quest too, just wanted to make sure I was on the right idea. Sometimes it's just fun to run around and look for something new.

What the hell is with Vault 106? I randomly came across it, so I went down there and explored around. There were a few times where things turned purple and I was either kind of warped into a past, before things were destroyed (the small hallway with two labrooms where you can use the computers) and then back into the present, and there was one time when a door opened and 3 Amata's came running out, and then just disappeared. It was kind of freaky. I don't know how it fits into the game - I didn't think there was supernatural type stuff going on in it.

Forget the sniper rifle, the Lincoln Repeater is where it's at.

Best gun in the game IMHO. Can take a super mutant down with one shot at long range. Also, you can easily repair it with hunting rifle parts.

History museum. Instead of going into the ghoul underworld, go to the door on the left (same place you go to get the lincoln artifacts on the slaver mission). It's in a glass case on the 2nd floor. Be prepared for lots of feral ghouls.

Holy crap is this game hard!

I'm level 3 and trying to kill fire ants in Greyditch and getting my *** handed to me like nobody's business....am I just trying to go somewhere too hard? Happened upon a quest to look for someone there...

Just trying to understand, cause my little pistol or laser gun won't do crap against these guys.

*edit* well, if I just get where I can shoot but they can't get me I'm golden lol...this game's cool. Still frickin hard (I need better guns), but awesome. I'll run out of ammo way too fast otherwise, cause those damn things take like 20 bullets it seems.

I had a hard time with the greyditch fireants at level 4 or 5 myself. I ended up saying **** it and moving on to something else.

Mines are your friends. Ants are very stupid. Drop one, shoot ant, step back, ant go boom. If he has any health left, one more shot should finish him.

Also don't aim for legs, it only does 50% damage.

If there's more than one, aim for antennae as they will go berserk and attack other ants if you hit.

If you don't have any grenades or mines yet, I'd go back later.

Yep, use mines. If it doesn't kill them they will be frenzied and attack the other ants. Just stay back.

I got the 'mesmotron' or whatever it's called and it's hillarious...anyone else have that weapon yet?

I won't spoil what it does (well there are a couple of possibilities actually), but it's a great weapon if you have some cover or a great sneak attack.

regarding earlier comments, I wish the sniper was better - or at least that I could sup it up or make a better one from scrap metal or something...I have the repeater though, but it's tough since is uses .44 rounds. I'm at the point where I don't even carry hand guns anymore except for one silenced one, and reg. assault rifles are disposeable to me.

I'd really appreciate though if someone could tell me where hte schematics are for the rail gun presented in the videos before release - I have no idea where it is, but really want to make that gun.

also does anyone know how many total schematics there are?

the "stealing independence" mission, after you complete it the guy gives you the schematics for it.

i have it and am in the process of finding the parts: medical brace, pressure tank/gauge, conductor (i think), and one other part i cant recall (at work) but its 4 things. and the crappy thing is that I have seen all these parts before and just not collected them.

I finally got the railgun pieces and made one. It's pretty sweet, but the nuka-grenade is even better. It's a grenade with 300+ damage.

I don't understand how the assault rifles are so weak..... Head shots with the hunting rifle do more damage, but the assualt rifle says it does 11 more damage.

There's more to it than just what the "specs" are. Distance from target, are they aware of you?, your ability with the gun and also the condition of the gun.. etc...
