    Re: Guitar Hero 4

Rental for now. I tried to buy it but no one was selling. Same store that put out RB 2 early last week. Right now I'm still buying,it hasn't changed my mind and so far it's been better than I thought it would be even though it's kinda squished on my SDTV but that should be fixed soon.

I've got the Les Paul, got GH 3 on PS3 and since there was a whole DLC price mess here in Canada at the time I got RB on the 360 so I can't do drums.

Couldn't find any cheats. They changed it and the orange button doesn't do anything so the old OBOYOBOY code doesn't work. Funny comments when attempting to put in random ones.

How is their WT mode and do they still offer the SP tiers?

        Here's the new ad:

        Didn't know Kobe could sing.
I don't know why they keep using that song when it's not even in the game.

WT looks to be the same as single player wich is the same as it's always been.

Well there's a little catch. I was doing the vocal career and it turns out it costs $8000 to do the Tool songs. Everything else has been free to this point. Crazy Train is awesome.

That sounds cool. I have been against this game for the longest time, but want the new Guitar Hero guitar. I guess they won't be selling it separate for sometime so I prepaid for the guitar bundle today. Figure the game at that point only is costing me $30, so I may ebay it since it will be sealed. I saw a bunch of impressions around from people that have the game early and it doesn't sound like its going to be any good. I found this set of impressions:

Interface: I have no idea what they were thinking on this part. Me and my roommate were playing one night and couldn't figure out where everything was. We could barely understand how Star Power worked, and when he failed out, we didn't quite understand what happened until we saw the stats (like the above). It also feels like they've taken a step back with the menu system. There's a loading screen almost every time you jump to a different section of the game. Understandable, but its so tedious to see that it has to load my profile, loading the info off the disc, THEN load any DLC every time, which I don't have!

Guitar: This is probably the only instrument I still enjoy the most, and thankfully, its mostly unchanged in GH:WT. My only real complaint from what I've played so far are, in fact, the slider bits. I find the purple line linking them to be very distracting, and once I found I don't have to strum these notes, it made these bits far too easy. Literally, NO STRUMMING, regardless if you have the slider or not. Unlike the RB solo's and the solo buttons, hitting other buttons during this will not penalize you either, so in theory, you could just spam the frets and/or tap them without ever having to strum. Aside from that, guitar is pretty good.

Bass: Still like bass, but hate the open note. I'd sooner them open up the highway to make it 6-notes wide than make a bar that comes down the screen. Maybe if it wasn't purple and it stood out a bit, I wouldn't have that much of a problem.

Vocals: I really enjoy vocals in RB, just because its a nice change of pace compared to drums or guitar, but man, I couldn't get my head wrapped around vocals. GH doesn't use the whole space of the vocal highway, so something I would think would be in the high range is actually the top, and visa-versa. Its also VERY precise, meaning missing any part of the words means missed points. I recall someone at Scorehero mentioning that humming is going to become more commonplace for GH because of this. Though, I do like that you can activate SP with your controller, and you earn SP by completing phrases, so its not limited to when you can use or gain SP.

Drums: My biggest complaint is the activation of SP. Can't wrap my head around it. I also found myself getting disinterested by the opening songs on drums. I was pretty bored and just moved back to guitar. Since there was no mystery to take part in, a lot of the songs I would be playing are songs from RB2.

I know I sound pretty negative, but they've had over a year to take what worked in RB and put that in GH, and in the end, I felt they've taken two steps back. The highway looks much better now, but I find the background action to be distracting because of how fluid it moves. That, and the background is not much to look at. Unlike RB, its more "we're looking at people on stage" than "the camera goes with the music". I'm willing to give GH a chance, but RB to me still feels like the superior product.
If Harmonix can really fix their instruments, they will topple this franchise. Reading around, a lot of people still plan to use the GH instruments with Rock Band 2. That is the position I have too for the guitar. The RB2 drums and guitar were better this go around than RB1, but the guitar still needs some work imo and the drums are almost there.

I'm planning on picking up RB2 in the next couple of weeks. Still trying to decide on getting GH or just renting it considering the only reason I have any interest in it is the 3 Tool songs.

It's nice to have 2 games to choose from, but I wasn't that huge of a fan if GHIII. It sounds like GHWT is more of the same. Over at ScoreHero, the game is getting a lot of negative reviews so I may just sell my copy out of the guitar bundle.

I tried the guitar at Best Buy yesterday, hated it. Not sure why, but that slide area felt like another thing that could break. That, or I've become so accustomed to my RB2 guitar.

You probably have become accustomed to the RB2 guitar, which is a good thing. I tried and I couldn't get used to it. I think that Harmonix is almost there with the guitar and drums. Next year will tell us a lot if they have made improvements.

These toy guitars are never built to last unless its the Xplorer.

                    Re: Guitar Hero 4

See I love the slide parts and open bass notes. I haven't had any trouble picking either of them up even on crappy SDTV with everything squished. Even a cheat that makes everything slides 'cept the chords. That's quite fun.

I can agree there's some serious problems with the vocals though.

I do rather love the song list so that's probably helping me have more fun as it's got songs I've been asking for since I heard about GH 1.

I don't think this will be toppled. I think it may have acquired Madden status, meaning that no matter how bad it is or even if there's something better it's still going to be the best seller due to name reconignition (even if it was bulit on another dev),celeb endorsment (see new ad),promotion and all that other type of thing. People on forums are the minority. Last MS numbers I read they said there were 20 mil 360s sold and 12 mil XBL memebers. So about 7.5 million people (taking into account the likelyhood that peoples broke and they went and bought a new one) don't even go online with their system, they don't care about RB DLC. Even then just a few months ago numbers came out and GH 3's monthly DLC outsold RB's weekly DLC. Pile a songlist that people actually know on top that (sorry but Panic Attack isn't cutting it against Hotel California) and it's pretty difficult to topple.

What's the scorehero complaint? Too easy? Guess what? Most people play on medium,if that. I've seen songs failed at 20% on easy in stores. #1 GH 3 complaint? Too hard. That reminds me I wanted to see what the new beginner difficulty was like.

                        Re: Guitar Hero 4

picked up GH:WT today for the Wii...the Mii Freestyle is kinda lame (I only tried the drums with the Wiimote and Nunchuck).

There are already songs available for DLC on the Wii...200 pts each. You can save to either SD or the system, and both become available in your setlist. The graphics, I feel, are an upgrade to GH3 on the Wii...less grainy.

I just played a few songs in Quick Play on Hard....Are you Gonna Go My Way, Livin' on a Prayer and Eye of the Tiger. 5-starred them all immediately, and almost got a perfect on Livin' on a Prayer (ridiculously easy...until a little purple run at the very end).

I just got the game as I already have 2 Les Pauls to use...I'm going to get the drums later. The purple sections can just be played with the frets with no strumming (like mentioned earlier).

For the Wii...this is a SERIOUS upgrade from GH3. You can now do co-op in quickplay (unlike in 3). Lots of options: auto sign-in online, DLC(!!!), friends lists (haven't seen if it works w/o friends codes).

For me, I'm happy with my $52 purchase today. Personally, the layout of the GH:WT drums did it for me. I'm a drummer and I thin the Rock Band drum layout is ridiculous. With GH, I can at least feel like I'm playing something that resembles a hi-hat.

On another note...I'm glad Rock Band is supporting GH instruments (and vice versa) this iteration. That way, my wife and I can rent RB2 for the Wii (and hopefully non-gimped like the first version) and see what the fun is all about.

For me: the more songs/options the better (with the least amount of fake plastic instruments!).
