Without getting too into this, I work at an electronics store and have a $250 employee gift card to burn on some things. I'm piling up a few games to use it on, but I was wondering if I should have played Oblivion before I play Skyrim? Are the stories interconnected at all? I had an old roommate that used to play Oblivion a lot on 360 and I watched quite a bit of it during the course of living with him so I know what I'd be getting myself into. Does this still have the ability to switch from first-person to third? I prefer third for games.

I'm not huge on the fantasy/swords/dragons stuff, but I keep hearing great things about this game and I do enjoy a good RPG with 50+ hours of game to it (as opposed to dropping $60 on four hours ala The Force Unleashed ). Thanks!
The Last of Us is the Citizen Kane of video-games. It is better than every game that has ever come before it, and is the new benchmark for all games to follow. It is nothing short of a work of art.

Its almost entirely separate, and the backstory you might have missed is recapped in books. Game is ****

yup...once she goes down make sure you stay clear so she can get back up because if you hit her then you have to find another companion

                2) Read up on as much of the main storyline as you've unlocked to your particular point in the game, or at the very least a general story of what is going on?

This is why the guide is a very good resource for this game. I use it mainly for the character skill's, perks and the massive detailed map but when I am at my wit's end with a quest or like in your case (and mine as I pile up so many adventuring around everywhere) forget WTF I am supposed to do, who to talk to or go, a simple reference to the that quest in the guide get's me back on track.

The hardcover guide is amazing and i would reccomend it highly. If your planning on playing this game for years (like I am) it is a must buy.

Really? That's tough!! I'm an archer so I usually let Lydia run up and distract while I just shoot arrows. I guess I missed one time :/

I have a master plan for the Companion people, its going to be awesome when the time is right.

I just bought my first house in Skyrim, time to go back through old dungeons and find cool things to decorate the house with. There goes my night

This. One-shotting a guard with your bow while hidden and staying hidden is a total rush.

On vacation next week and the house to myself for most of the day during that time. Major playing time coming my way...

I'm going to disagree very slightly, only due to personal preference. I can see it being highly useful for character skills and perks like you said, but I wouldn't use it myself for quests.

For me I want to able to figure out most of it on my own. I've only just got the game and I found myself pretty stuck in one of the early side quests (The Golden Claw in Riverwood), so i retraced my steps a little bit, observed the environment and found what I needed to do. I personally feel finding out something for yourself is what the game is about, and I feel the guide takes that away if you use it a lot.

But of course I don't condemn people for using it, it is a fantastic resource for people who don't have the time to hunting for minor details.
