I have read that the only way for companions to die is if somebody (you or enemy) accidentally hits them when they go into the kneeling position or if you accidentally hit them and kill them outright. Enemies won't target them when they are in the kneeling position. This matches my experience so far.

Definitely hinders the amount of battle experience if you let them do all the fighting. I am playing as a wood elf so it actually works to my advantage. I let my companion move in close while I stand back and snipe. My companion has taken a few friendly fire arrows because of this but it works for the most part.

        Random Skyrim Encounters:

I fast traveled to a location near Solitude, and was immediately stopped by a guard to pay a fine for a murder I had committed. Right as I was about to pay for the fine a dragon swoops down, but somehow dies almost immediately (I have a companion, and something else like a companion that constantly follow me). Almost no reaction time to figure out what happened, but my two follower soon turn on the guard, and in the midst of killing him a blood dragon swooped down from the sky. Crazy situation, but still very awesome.

What items can you give your companions, and have them actually use them? I've given my companion a glass sword, and a steel helmet and the companion has equipped it, but can I upgrade their armor?

I don't know if it depends on class but from what I've seen, they put on whatever has the most armor and use whatever has the most damage. You can upgrade their armor sure, just take whatever you gave them, enchant it and put it back.

I wonder if they use potions, I'm gonna test that out later on this evening.

I'm a wood elf archer too and I think I'm going to start rolling again with a companion in order to increase my archery skill because right now my stealth skill is like 52 and my archery skill I believe is 39 and I kind of want to close the gap a little.

With perks, I think I'm going to just focus on pickpocketing, sneak, archery, and illusion with possibly a little alchemy thrown in as well. But my next priority is getting a good bow as I use the longbow mainly right now as both my enchanted bows ran out of there charge, so I'm probably going to break them down to learn their effects. I want to get a soul trap enchanted weapon though for soul gem farming. So much to do in Skyrim, but so little time right now to play it with work and school. Have a take-home accounting exam I have to finish and accounting is hard enough to focus on without Skyrim thrown into the mix...forget debits and credits, I'm just thinking about skills and perks right now.

Just as an FYI once you get into the more advanced Illusion spells like invisibility it becomes redundant with sneak. Obviously you can still level up both but it may make sense to only put perks into one or the other.

If you want a good bow relatively early in the game:

Magic npc's just beat the hell outta me. 3 spells I'm dead. I like playing on expert but getting really frusterated by some of the balancing.

Also I am finding the difficulty of dragons vary greatly.

Restarted again. Went back to my two handed heavy redgaurd, was still far too beast mode and easy killing most things with 3 strikes. Mage was fun until I got to a quest in the high elves (wont spoil) magic did little against all those warriors. So no I've gone Dark Elf Rogue Archer/Dual wield/ Conjurer.

So how do you guys do it with bows? Or with dual wielding. Ive gon pretty far and cant imagine how you guys do it. Do bows do massive damage?
