    Re: No Man's Sky

So...this was the game we were told we were getting in 2016.

We just had to test it for 2 years is all! Haha.

But truly, after playing about four hours with about half of that with friends I have to say this one will be in my rotation for a very long time. This is No Man's Sky 2 for sure, and everything looks great.

Some new animals, or new to me at least that move well and have attempted to eat my face off. The clouds...they are looking phenomenal and real. The gameplay is smooth, so agree on 3rd person there is some framerates drop, but it isn't too bad. I played in it practically all day and didnt notice much of any difference.

Now to playing with friends. This is where the game will now never get dull for me. We were just having fun traveling together, and really haven't done too much in regards to building or settling down. We fought with each other, we traveled, and overall were just having a fun time with this game. I am an even bigger fan.

Also, I'd recommend starting over unless you're really deep in a game that you don't want to leave behind - MANY of the basics of materials and crafting have changed and the tutorial sequence seems to do a pretty good job of walking you through it. It's not like you can't pick it up on a game in progress, but you're going to be left wondering what you need to launch your ship and things like that since just about everything's been re-named.

I hate to be "that" guy, but with all of these new updates I am wanting to give it another go. Can we still play single player offline with all of the new features? I appreciate the help. My only access is random sometimes and I like games that I can travel with.

Man, taking forever to download the update. Time left just keeps going up. Guess everyone who just got home from work in the Eastern and Central timezones are DLing it at the same time.

Yeah, that's not happening for me. I've spent nearly 2 years cataloging 163 systems containing 643 worlds in a massive excel spreadsheet so I'm not about to start over.

                    Understandable.

In that case, mind sharing how materials from the old one carry over? To use the ship launch example, it's not just renaming in that case - you need a crafting product that didn't exist. I have a feeling that portable refiner is a big factor here - maybe you can convert older materials into the new ones you need now? Just a guess.

I deleted my old games ( none of which had much progress) so I can't check.

Yeah, there are a ton of new resources and products and like half of my technology has been changed to "obsolete technology". It really is like a new game so I have to figure all this out again. I'm on PS4 btw if anyone was wondering.

This has been on my radar for a lonnng time. Seems now is the time to pull the trigger. $29.99 on Steam right now.

Overall consensus seems to be extremely positive of you're starting new. Also, glad to see those who bought it at release finally getting the game it was always meant to be.

                            Re: No Man's Sky

For anyone who is wondering what happens to existing saves, here's what happens. I've put in close to 850 hours since Oct/Nov 2016 and had just recently found an A-class hauler with 48 slots plus I have an 24 slot S-class multitool and a fully maxed exosuit inventory and virtually all my technology was at the highest level. So yeah, I really don't want to start over, so here's what happens.
                            1. All technology upgrades are replaced by "obsolete technology" with the description that it was "corrupted by the ATLAS". The only exception is the hyperdrive upgrades which were simply renamed from sigma, tau, epsilon to cadmium, emiril, iridium. The "obsolete technology" can be dismantled to yield "technology modules" which don't seem to have any use except being sold on the galactic market for a very high prices (I got 50,000 units per module). So (save for the hyperdrive), you are pretty much left with the basic technology you initially start the game with, though you will still have things like the exosuit hazmat gauntlet and starship conflict/economy scanner if you had constructed those.

                            2. Resources in your inventories will be converted to new types of resources as the resources have been completely redone with many new resources. For instance, zinc is now sodium, iron is now ferrite.

                            3. Resources needed to recharge technology are now different and you may not have the necessary resource in your inventories to recharge technologies.

                            4. The new technology upgrade system uses different products that you may not yet have the recipes for.

                            5. If you had a planetary base, it will be gone (at least mine appears to be).

In short, even if you are resuming from an existing save, it's basically like starting a whole new game anyway. The game even feels like a completely new game. I loaded my existing save which started me in a space station (where I had left off) and stayed there for a bit trying to figure things out. I ended up taking a mission to raid a planetary installation then went to the site on a scorched planet that had "standard" sentinels only to be almost immediately attached by sentinels including drones, a quad, and a biped walker (I guess they were protecting the installation even though I never actually tried entering it). Being as I only had a basic boltcaster and pulse grenade launcher, I lacked the firepower to fight back so I tried running away, but they kept following me and attacking. I also didn't have any fuel in my launch thrusters so I couldn't just fly away in my ship. The incessant sentinel attach combined with the very hot planet and lack of thermal protection made it a pretty hopeless situation so I ended up reloading an older save that ended up being in a previous system.
