According to a nutritionist I talked to, I should be taking in close to 150g of protein each day, but not all at once, of course.. body can only absorb 35g at a time.

I agree with that. The ideal times to take a protein shake is 30 minutes before you lift/workout and within 30-45 minutes after you workout. You will absorb more that way. I currently take a shake that has 25 grams of plant protein per serving. I also take the shake as a morning snack. Thats half of your protein intake right there.

Protein should be taken in different forms as well like lean meats and nuts. I usually eat an 8 ounce chicken breast for dinner which is about 60 grams of protein. Snacks right now are almonds/cashews/sun flower seeds which have about 5 g of protein each serving. Lunch I'll have a chicken or tuna salad which should have 25-35 g of protein.

I'm allergic to eggs but its such a great source or protein. You can take about 8 egg whites to make 30 g of protein and at the same time you are taking out cholesterol with removing the yolk.

For muscle building I was recommended by body builders to take 1 g per pound that you weigh. This was tough for me since it means I would have to eat a lot more calories which I'm trying to stay within 2000-2500 per day. I may have to eat more tuna as a snack through out the day which has 40 g of protein per can which is a ton.

I've really cut well, over the past month, but in order for me to get more muscle.. I need to get back on the high protein wagon.. I sort of fell off.

He also suggested that I take in some sort of protein before going to bed, at night.. like a chicken breast or some tuna. He said that would help me a lot, since my body has nothing to feed off of while I'm sleeping.

What got us started, was me asking him how he felt about protein intake throughout the day, opposed to primarily before or after a workout. He felt like it has virtually the same result, if you're getting the right amount.. I guess it's just a matter of opinion.

It really helps having a licensed M.D. and a Nutritionist as the guys who own the gym I go to...

I'm not big on asking for help or questions, but if I have a concern, they are more than happy to talk about it.

The best form of Protein to take right before Sleep, is Casein. You can find it in Cottage cheese (sometimes I'll have a Bowl of cottage cheese before bed) or you can get the purer Casein Protein Mix from supplement stores.

There are actual scientific reasons for taking Casein before long periods of inactivity in order to maintain optimal muscle building state. From Wikipedia.
An attractive property of the casein molecule is its ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach, which makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours.[8] This provides better nitrogen retention and use by the body.[9] Plasma immunoreactive IGF-1 concentration in rats given a casein diet was higher than that in rats given a soya-bean-protein or protein-free diet.[10] Because of its slow digesting properties, casein is widely used between meals and before bed to help bodybuilders maintain muscle in an anabolic state

Not to take anything away from the article...but the guy is a trainer. He had a solid base of lbm to begin with and quite a bit of knowledge. He's also in a gym all day. He's not the average Joe trying to lose weight who generally doesn't have the knowledge, muscle or dedicated gym time.

That's a BIG difference. I get asked all the time "What do you do?" I always have to say to them someting along the lines of "Look, my wife is a gym owner and I'm in there everyday, plus we are SUPER strict on diet". Helps to have that support/knowledge and easy access. I would never expect someone to follow my training, bc it's my lifestyle, not something I do on the side, it's just unrealistic.

Got a new tub of Assault yesterday, New Watermelon flavor, and banged out a Trap/Lat workout tonight. Those are sort of neglected areas for some people but I really singled those out. My arms were still a little fatigued from my extreme Bicep/Chest workout from a few days ago so I had to go a little easier than I wanted to.

Also my Banana Cream Combat Powder is starting to reach the bottom so I went onto BB.com and saw this was available.

Yeah I'm a sucker for those exotic flavor types. Some of the dudes I train with will only take Chocolate, or Vanilla flavor and swear by it. I think that's too boring. I love trying out new flavors, and mixing it up.

So far I've had BSN Syntha-6 Moccacino, Opt. Nutrition Cake Batter, Muscle Pharm, S'Mores, & Banana Cream, and Orange Creamsicle is on it's way. (I will review it in this thread when I get it)... also I read Muscle Milk came out with a Raspberry-Cheesecake protein flavor.. which sounds amazing to me, but I'm not a huge fan of Muscle Milk so I won't be trying.

BSN Syntha-6 Mochaccino is awesome. I know my local VS sells a cake batter one too but I haven't seen it for a while.

Other protein blends and whey protein powders I've tried:

Bodytech Whey Vanilla (Not that good)
Muscle Milk Chocolate (Still good in my opinion, but yes I've noticed a difference in taste and texture from the ones way back because of reformulation)
Muscle Milk Strawberries and Creme (Pretty good)
                          Muscle Milk Cake Batter (Awesome)
Muscle Milk Mocha Latte (Decent, but not as good as Syntha-6's Mochaccino)
Muscle Milk Chocolate Mint (Probably the worst flavor I've had, only had it once and never tried it again).
Optimum Nutrition Whey Double Rich Chocolate (I don't really look for taste with ON, but you can tell I'm a sucker for chocolate).

It seems like my local VS has been carrying MusclePharm Combat for a while, but just this past Tuesday was the first time I've seen it. I was close to getting it, but opted for MM since the 2.4 lb tubs were $19.99 each. One of these days I'll try it out though.

Kind of a bummer that MP actually raised the standard price of the Combat. Was a little surprised when I went to order my newest batch (4 lbs) and it went up to $39.99 from the usual $34.99 I used to get before. Their explanation on their website is that, they had to price bump because of increasing cost of raw materials/whey.

Regardless I'm still getting it as I'm starting to get hooked on MP products. Seeing impressive results, plus I think they really do a great job with providing great taste as well. I think both MP, and BSN make some of the tastiest supplements around.

Really end results will trump taste any day, however if you can get great results and have the added bonus of a great tasting product that is just the cherry on top.

Me personally, I take double the recommended amount right after my workout and the next morning I'll have a single dose of it. Just from that I take in 75 grams of protein.

Since I've been doing that, I've become less sore and have recovered well and I'm ready to go again as soon as the next morning.

Sometimes you need something bad to happen to get you back into gear.

I was extremely sick this past week... I thought it was the flu or strep throat, but it turns it was just a viral infection. I had fevers ranging from 101 to 104 degrees, the worst throat pain I've ever had, migraine headaches and terrible body aches. I went to the Urgent Care provider near my house and the doctor wasn't any help, just telling me I would have to tough it out on Tylenol and a lot of rest. It wasn't an infection so antibiotics would be of no help to me.

I feel like I am at the tail end of it now, but am still sick. In six days, I've went from 264 to 252 pounds. I am 6'5".

I attribute it to being moved to the Graveyard shift and my body has just not adapted well, but I'll take the 12 pound weight loss. 250 is a decent range for me and the lowest I've been since about 2007 has been 245 pounds or so. When I feel better, I'll clean my diet up and keep the pounds off.

Being sick sucks, but sometimes it's the kick in the *** that you need.
