As for scouting, I believe in Gene's scouting department. I remember how many people ragged on us for Alualu, but he was a very good player last year, and he'll continue to be good. Gene hasn't flat-out swung and missed yet.

As for Mallett, Gene tends to go for guys with high floors, instead of high ceilings. I think Mallett is a guy with a high ceiling, but a super low floor. Also, he tends to get "good guys" (i.e. Seniors with team captaincies, and no problems off the field). Look at the five guys Gene got this year. No "bad character guys", almost all of them were SRs and team captains (except Gabbert, who was only not a team captain because he was a JR).

Garrard is good, but he's not a franchise QB. If you have a chance to get a franchise QB in the draft, you gotta go for it. We haven't selected a QB since 2003. It was definitely time. Time will tell on Gabbert, but I feel like he can learn this year and come in next year and be quite well.

Also, one thing a lot of people don't know is that we'll be getting D'Anthony Smith back on the D-Line this year, so there's a ton of talent on the D-Line between Mincey, Alualu, Kampmann, Lane, Pot Roast, Smith... while it is good to build the lines (which Gene has done), Gene got a steal (as was marked on his board). Like I said earlier, I will trust his scouting department.

Gene has been outspoken in saying that we'll address some needs in free agency with a few patches, while we develop our talent. I see no reason to disagree with this approach.

Yea I hear you with the character issues. Gabbert just didn't show me enough in college to say he's a potential frachise QB. He might prove me wrong but I just don't believe he was worth trading up for. Sitting behind Garrard for a year might help him though. We're just going to have to wait and see..

Signing Posluszny was a nice move. Jags supposedly have interest in Clint Session to man the weak side. Add Daryl Smith and that's a nice LB corps.

Re: 2010 Jacksonville Jaguars

Definitely pleased by this move. Hopefully Pos can stay healthy for a whole season. Now we have to look towards Michael Huff or another safety to bring in, and we'll have a much better defense.

I'm starting to see good things in the near future for our Jags. Before FA, I would have been hard pressed to say we would make the playoffs. With the Pos move, I think that it's becoming more and more possible.

I'm so ready to see Gabbert play in a preseason game. I want to see how he does.

Re: 2010 Jacksonville Jaguars

Killer ending to the O-Zone today:

James from Jacksonville:
So, Wayne Weaver has come out again and put it on the fans to buy tickets for an inferior product. He spreads blame to everyone but his organization and his managerial choices. We were season-ticket holders for 13 years, but it became apparent that he had no respect for his customers, so we declined to renew. Whether or not Gene Smith turns this mess around remains to be seen. Save the whale? Save your breath!

John: I respond to this email in case there is a silent minority who believes this way. I have to take real issue with the premise of Weaver spreading blame to everyone but his organization and his managerial choices, and not respecting customers. I’ve covered the NFL since 1995 and covered Weaver as an outside journalist from 1995-2001 and my experience with him was that he was remarkably willing to take blame and publicly admit it. A lot of the mistakes the Jaguars have made have involved overspending for the wrong players, but I’ve never seen the Jaguars as a team not trying very hard to win. I also have long found Weaver to attempt to run as transparent an organization as there is in the NFL. Have the Jaguars always been an elite franchise under Weaver? No, but let’s not forget the guy is responsible for bringing the NFL to Jacksonville and I firmly believe he is committed to making it work here for the long-term; if I didn’t believe it, I wouldn’t be here. Whether the Jaguars develop into an elite level team remains to be seen – there are a lot of factors that go into such a thing that are beyond an owner’s control – but to say they’re not committed to it or that Weaver expects the fan base to support a team that’s not making every effort to win is as wrong as it could possibly be. Save your own breath, James; the whale deserves to be saved.

Re: Jacksonville Jaguars

Landry is going to be a good SS for the Jags, I'm a bit surprised they are going with Prosinski to start at FS, but apparently he's the smart, hard tackling player the Jaguars have been needing back there.

Some good reports on Gabbert and his play, I think if the lockout had never happened they would be looking to move Garrard before preseason was over. As it stands I think the team can win this season with Garrard at QB and win in the playoffs.

Garrard is still a good qb. He's certainly not a franchise type guy, but he's good. I think it'd be foolish to trade him. I don't think Gabbert should start this year simply because this has a chance to be a playoff team, but not with a rookie qb

Re: Jacksonville Jaguars

I'm pumped for tomorrow night's preseason opener (Pats and Jags are my two favorite teams). Can't wait to see all the young kids get some time.

Couple things I'm looking forward to:

1. Gabbert: Let's see where the QB of the future is at this point.

2. D'Anthony Smith: Not sure how much time he'll get, but it'll be our first look to see if he can be the #3 DT

3. Chris Prosinski: Can he be the starting FS? Need a guy who can play center field as Landry if more of a SS type. I think having both Landry and Greene on the field together could be a liability so Prosinski's development could be key.

4. Jarrett Dillard: Is this the year he stays healthy and really breaks out as a WR contributor?

5. Zach Miller: Love watching him play, always hope he gets the ball in his hands because he's a playmaker.
