Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

A scary moment in todays Spring Training action as Eugenio Suarez was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Brewers SS Willy Adames in the bottom of the 6th inning. Suarez was taken out of the game immediately and is currently being evaluated by the Mariners medical staff. Abraham Toro took over at 3B. Media will try to get an update from Head Athletic Trainer Kyle Torgerson after the game.

Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

Have not posted in a week or so as I kept going back and forth now that I had ridin's rosters what team I wanted to play and figured I would spare the boards of seeing 800 new start-up franchises every day. So, I spent the last week messing around going back and forth deciding who to play. From my favorite team the Mets to a rebuilding team. I finally made a decision a few days ago but wanted to be sure. I knew if I could play an entire spring training with a team which I usually always sim I would stay with it and finally we have arrived, and I can get to posting about one franchise. I know this will also be followed thru with as I went 8-21 worst record in the league and still played all the games.

So for my 2022 100% franchise team I am running with a rebuilding Pittsburgh Pirates

      <a href="https://imgbb.com/"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/LvX9JqH/mlb-spring-training-logo-primary-20223429.png" alt="mlb-spring-training-logo-primary-20223429" border="0"></a>

The Pittsburgh Pirates went into Spring Training knowing this is a rebuild process. They let every member of the organization know. Very few jobs are guaranteed, very few are safe.

So with the hiring of LegendKillerOne as the new GM/Manager they invited 40 guys into camp with eyes wide open. The only jobs that were guaranteed going into the season regardless of the spring would be Bryan Reynolds and Ke'Bryan Hayes.

With that being said we finished dead last record wise this spring. We finished with a record of 8-21. Not many bright spots. As we take a look at the final spring numbers here is what they look like

      Hitters

      <a href="https://ibb.co/ftYjQ2Q"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/FJbRnKn/Spring-Hitters.png" alt="Spring-Hitters" border="0"></a>

Pitchers- And I warn you, *If you have an upset stomach do not look at these stats. They will surely make you sick.

      <a href="https://imgbb.com/"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/xX32vH8/Spring-Pitchers.png" alt="Spring-Pitchers" border="0"></a>

      Roster Moves During Spring

The Pirates made a few moves during the spring. All in attempt to get younger

They Claimed SP- Blayne Enlow off waivers from the Twins

The Claimed 1B- Elehuris Montero off waivers from the Rockies

The signed 21 year old Japan Free Agent SP Roki Sasaki to a 3 year deal at 3 million per year.

With the spring behind us the management team will now look over the results to see who is coming North with us for the start of the season.

After dropping a Spring Training game to the Brewers on Tuesday at Laughing Mountain Park 4-9 in front of a crowd of 10,364 manager Scott Servais was asked about the injury to Eugenio Suarez. “The initial report looks good. Nothing more serious then a shiner. He’ll get the next couple of days off but won’t spend any time on the injured list.”
The Mariners have a off day on March 2nd and will travel to take on the Colorado Rockies.

Is there a way to increase budget besides with sponsorships? I know in the past you could buy extra budget. I just got started with the Mets and I’m projected to be $30 million in the hole and I can’t upgrade my scouting staff

Off Season and Spring Training - 2023

The best player on the team last season will be sticking around for the next 3 seasons at least. Andrew Benintendi resigns on a 4-year contract worth 56 million dollars. The 4th year has a mutual option worth 16.8 million. Once that was taken care of we made the decision to move on from nearly the entire coaching staff firing Manager Mike Matheny, Pitching Coach Cal Eldred, 3B coach Vance Wilson, and Farm Director John Fiore. 1B Coach Joey Retodo had his contract expire. While Hitting Coach Terry Bradshaw will stick around after a decent offensive season.

Adalberto Mondesi had 1 year left before hitting free agency. We decided to go ahead and extend him a bit after putting together a healthy season. He gets a 3-year deal worth 30 million. With a team option on the last season worth 11.4 million. We didn't spend much in free agency opting for a few 1-year deals. We brought back Danny Duffy to take Greinke's spot giving him 6.5 million for the season. He didn't pitch at all in 2022 and hasn't pitched at all since we traded him away to the Dodgers in 2021. We signed 3B Chad Pinder to take the place of the released Hunter Dozier giving him 3 million. He hit .250/.297/.387 with 14 HR for the A's last season. And the last free agent signing went to SS Yairo Munoz. He appeared in only 9 games for the Phillies last season getting 7 hits (5 doubles) in 31 AB. He gets 1 million.

We made a couple more moves grabbing RP Dillon Maples off waivers from the Phillies and then the Braves traded for Catcher Adrian Del Castillo from the Diamondbacks which allowed us to trade for Catcher Chadwick Tromp from the Braves. With Melendez and Salvy both being in the lineup we needed a little depth at catcher. And lastly, in the Rule 5 Draft, we grabbed RP Juan Minaya from the Twins.

                Offseason Transactions
                Spoiler

Going into Spring Training we had about a dozen spots on the team up for grabs with the most important battles being the last 2 spots in the rotation and the 1B/DH job.

In the rotation, the top 3 spots were already locked up by Singer, Duffy, and Keller. We had 5 guys fighting for the last 2 and possibly a long-relief role. The first to fall was Jonathan Bolwan halfway through ST. After putting up a 2.52 ERA in 35.2 innings at the end of last season he couldn't replicate it giving up 8 ER and 7 walks in 11 IP. The last 4 fought until the end with Kris Bubic and Jace Vines winning out. Bubic had a 3.15 ERA and 1.05 WHIP While Vines put up a 4.05 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Jackson Kowar and Carlos Hernandez join Bowlan down in AAA after putting up a 6.75 and 5.85 ERA. All of them pitched 20 innings.

Out in the pen, we had 3 or 4 spots open depending on how many we decided to start the season with. We thought there would be 4 guys locked in but that didn't end up being the case. Josh Staumont, Jake Brentz, and Scott Barlow made it through fine. Taylor Clarke on the other hand had a terrible month putting up a 9.00 ERA and 2.25 WHIP. He was great for us last season with a 2.56 ERA in 116 IP. Hopefully, he can get back on track because I don't see our pen being as consistent as it was last year. The last spots ended up going to Joel Payamps, Juan Minaya, Dillon Maples, and Seth Elledge. Domingo Tapia joined Clarke down in AAA after managing to be even worse with an 11.25 ERA and 2.63 WHIP in 8 IP.

On the offensive side, Nick Pratto and Vinnie Pasquntino received the most playing time this spring while fighting for the 1B job. There was room for both if they were good. Unfortunately, neither of them ended up playing well. At the end of the day we needed one of them so Nick Pratto will start the season on the team. He hit .211 with 2 HR and a .635 OPS. Vinnie will start in AAA after he hit just .197 with a .546 OPS and no homers. With him being sent down that left the DH open where Salvy will now start the season and MJ Melendez will start being the plate.

With Melendez at catcher instead of RF that left a starting spot open for Chad Pinder or Edward Olivares. Neither of them were great hitting about .250 with a homer so they will start the season sharing time. With Olivares mainly against righties and Pinder against lefties.

The last spots open were backups with Chadwick Trop, Michael Massey, and Yairo Munoz taking the spots. Munoz will see the most playing time when someone needs a day off. Emmanuel River and Maikel Garcia were sent to AAA after hitting .189 and .185.

We were lucky to get out of spring with no serious injuries. Kowar missed about 5 days with a sore shoulder. Some other teams weren't as lucky.

                Spoiler

We open up our season on March 30th as we head up to Minnesota to take on the Twins. We follow that up with a trip to Chicago to face the White Sox before heading back to KC to take on the A's in our home opener on April 6th. We will have 28 games before we hit May. 16 Road games and 12 home. 15 of them will be against our division. With only 9 games total against teams that were over .500 last season. I hope to improve on our 72 wins from last season. But I currently have no reason to believe the starting pitching is good enough to get it done. Asa Lacy should be ready to be called up at some point this season. And if things go really well our 5th round pick from last season SP Alfonso Rios could also see some time in the majors. I highly doubt this team is good enough to be even a wild card contender. But we have a lot of young guys that could surprise us.

                  Cardinals vs Pirates March 31-April 2, 2022

The regular season is upon us with two teams seemingly headed in different directions. The Cardinals are hoping for a world series run in what could be the final season for Molina, Pujols and Wainwright. The Pirates are letting the youth play as they take a year to rebuild in hopes of getting in the playoff picture in 2023.

Game 1- Opening Day (Jack Flaherty vs Zach Thompson)
For all teams opening day brings out a sold out crowd and optimism of better days. With everyone tied for first place for one day. And on this opening day the Pirates forgot all about being a team taking a year off and gave the fans a small glimpse of what the future may look like. The Pirates bats went to work on Flaherty and went to work early. They got a lead off homerun from Daniel Vogelbach and an RBI single from Ke'Bryan Hayes and a sac fly from Michael Chavis and forced Flaherty to throw 44 pitches in the first inning and just like that were up 3-0. Flaherty would only go 4 innings before he was over 100 pitches and then the Cards bullpen was not good at all as both Waddell and Matz had issues. The two of them gave up 7 more runs walking 3 all with the bases loaded and the Pirates cruised to victory 11-1. The Pirates got two homeruns and 4 rbis from rookie LF Jack Suwinski. Rated a 67 with C potential he had a strong spring as the Pirates number 6 rated prospect and showed maybe he is a diamond in the rough? They also got 3 hits each from Bryan Reynolds and Ke'Bryan Hayes. Pirates starter Zach Thompson who was roughed up in spring threw 6 strong innings giving up only 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 4. And the bullpen allowed only 1 hit over the remaining 3 innings and the Pirates got off to a great start to the season. FINAL SCORE- Pirates 11, Cards 1

Game 2- (Adam Wainwright vs Roki Sasaki)
After a day off on Friday they were back at it on Saturday for game 2. Adam Wainwright in what could be his swan song matched up against rookie sensation from Japan Roki Sasaki. Neither of the starters disappointed as both went 6 innings only allowing 1 run each. Sasaki a HR to Tommy Edman and Wainwright a solo shot to Roberto Perez. The 7th inning would prove to be trouble for the Pirates bullpen as Sasaki would allow a lead off walk before being pulled from the game. Chris Stratton would come in for relief. He would allow a rbi double to Tyler O Neill, followed by a Sac Fly to Dylan Carlson and just like that the Cards had a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the 7th the Pirates would get one back on Oneil Cruz first big league homerun a solo shot to cut the lead to 3-2. But that would be as close as they got. Cabrera and Gallegos would shut down the 8th and the 9th and the Cards would even up the series. FINAL SCORE- Pirates 2, Cards 3

Game 3- (Miles Mikolas vs Roansy Contreras)
The rubber game of the series was once again a pitchers duel. Contreras another one of Pittsburgh's top 10 prospects showed why he made the team out of camp and he matched pitch for pitch against Mikolas and like in game 2 of the series both pitchers left with the game tied at 1-1. Mikolas would go 7 giving up only 1 run on 3 hits. The one run a solo homerun for Daniel Vogelbach his second of the season. Contreras would go 6 innings allowing only 1 run on 4 hits. The one run coming on an RBI single from Tommy Edman. That score would stay tied until the bottom of the 8th when Cards manager once again went to Brandon Waddell who was roughed up in game 1 and once again he was roughed up. He came in the game and allowed 4 straight hits and 2 runs on back to back RBI doubles by Roberto Perez and Daniel Vogelbach and was pulled before recording an out. The Pirates would take a 3-1 lead on those 4 hits and Pirates Closer David Bednar would come in for the 9th and shut it down for his first save of the season. FINAL SCORE- Pirates 3, Cards 1

The Pirates (2-1) take 2 of 3 and now head to face the Reds (2-1) for a three game set.

                    Cardinals drop series to Rockies

The Cardinals (68-54) dropped 2 games of a 3 game series with the Rockies in St.Louis. The Cardinals lead on the Brewers remains at 1.5 games.

Not much to write about in this series aside from Jack Flaherty's perfect game. Outside of that, the Rockies just beat up the Cardinals, both Matthew Boyd and Adam Wainwright. Aside from the perfect game, the Cardinals pitching staff yielded 15 runs on 26 hits including 6 homeruns in the other 2 games.

The Cardinals will now travel to Arizona for a 3 game series with the Diamondbacks.

Cardinals take 2 of 3 from Diamondbacks

The Cardinals (70-55) took the series against the Diamondbacks in Arizona over the weekend. The Cardinals lead is just a game over the Brewers.

The Cardinals won the first two games but were unable to secure the sweep on Sunday. Dylan Carlson extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Cardinals will travel to Chicago for a 4 game series to begin the week with the Cubs

Mariners drop back to back Spring Training games. The most recent loss coming in extra innings vs the Colorado Rockies. Manager Scott Servais said “We have to capitalize on opportunities if we want to win ballgames. Next up, a home game vs the Cleveland Guardians.

Playing as the Braves, won the series against The Marlins, 2-1. Record now is 14-9. We are tied for first in the NL East with the Washington Nationals.

                            Game 1: W Final Score, 2-1
Swanson hits his fifth home run of the season. A solo shot in only the second AB of the game. The second run was scored off an RBI Triple hit by Rosario, his first triple of the year. Rosario was great in this game, went 3 for 3 and had been struggling. Fried gets the win, pitching 8 strikeouts in 7 innings.

                            Game 2: L Final Score, 0-1
Got a few hits in the game but couldn't get anything going. I did pitch 10 strikeout with Morton, in 7 innings. Aside from that not much to note.

                            Game 3: W Final Score, 3-1
Had several opportunities to extend this lead further. Just about lost it in the 9th. Alibes hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 3rd allowing d'Arnaud to score. Then in the 4th, Ozuna hits his first home run of the year, allowing Riley to score. Ian Anderson gets the win with 6 strikeouts in 5 innings pitched.

Next series is against The Cubs 9-13, 4th in NL Central

                                Tigers(33-26) Sweep Twins(24-34) at Comerica

In an always important 4 game divisional series, the Tigers took on the Twins and did just enough to win each of the four games to earn the sweep. This was the first sweep for the Tigers since the Yankees series in mid April. The Tigers ended May/Started June on a great run, and they will look to have it continue in the Third Full Month of the season. The Tigers now head to the Bronx for a 3 game weekend set, looking to complete the season sweep, which will be a tough task vs the 40-18 Yankee team.
