Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

As the Seattle Mariners get ready to start their 2022 campaign with a home series vs the Detroit Tigers and build off of their 2021 a success here are a few things to look at.

Will Julio Rodriguez live up to the hype? -~American League Rookie of The Year preseason candidate for sure.~
Will Emerson Hancock be a good fit in the #5 spot in the rotation?
Is Suarez a long term solution at 3rd base?
Will the outfield eventually be Julio Rodriguez in CF, Kyle Lewis in LF and Jared Kelenic in RF?
Can 2021 AL Cy Young award winner Robbie Ray repeat?

    Opening Day Lineups

    Seattle Mariner Detroit Tigers
Adam Frazier 2B 1. Victor Reyes CF
Ty France 1B 2. Robbie Grossman RF
Jesse Winker LF 3. Miguel Cabrera 1B

    Eugenio Suarez 3B 5. Jonathan Schoop 2B

      What a nerve wracking series

      Game 1: LAD 12 SD 6
      Game 2: SD 4 LA 2
      Game 3: LA 3 SD 2
      Game 4: SD 3 LA 1
      Game 5: SD 5 LA 4

We advance to take on the Brewers who swept the Phillies. ALCS is the Yankees who advanced by beating the Astros 3-2 and the White Sox who beat Boston 3-2.

      Projected starters

Game 1: Yu Darvish vs Corbin Burnes
Game 2: Blake Snell vs Brandon Woodruff
Game 3: Mike Clevinger vs Freddy Peralta

Padres and Brewers were the only 2 teams with over 100 wins in the regular season.

      Padres 108-54 and Brewers 104-58

The Seattle Mariners opened the 2022 campaign in front of a sold out crowd of 47,929 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Eugenio Suarez got the Mariners on the board early in the bottom of the 1st with a line drive double to LF and picking up RBI #1 on the season.

Robbie Ray was dealing tonight working a complete game, giving up only 6 hits and picking up the shutout victory. Ray worked out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the top of the 8th inning to keep the shutout going.

Jared Kelenic gave the Mariners s we with an insurance run via the long ball in the bottom of the 8th a 426ft HR off the Hit It Here Cafe in RF with a exit velocity of 109.0

The young phenom Julio Rodriguez did not disappoint going 3 for 4 with a run scored in his MLB debut

The Seattle Mariners take game #2 of the Detroit behind great pitching and defense. SP Logan Gilbert went 6.0 giving up 4 hits and 1ER and coming up with 10K’s.
A 114.4 line drive HR to RF by Jesse Winker gave the M’s insurance in the bottom of the 7th.

              End of Season - 2022

The end of the season is here and with a record of 72-90 it was a slight step back from last year but hopefully we put ourselves in a better position to contend in the future.

There were a few good playoff spot battles right up to the end. In the AL the Mariners, Yankees, and Guardians all went into the last series with both wild card spots up for grabs. The Yankees at 89 wins were taking on the Orioles. The Guardians at 87 wins were facing us. And the Mariners were going against the A's. The Yankees did their best to blow it getting swept by the Orioles to stay at 89. The Guardians matched their wins after taking 2 of 3 against us. And as usual, the Mariners blew it losing 2 of 3 to the worst team in the AL to finish with 87. Over in the NL the Cardinals and Brewers spent the month fighting for the division. After splitting a 2 game series on the 27th they entered the last 3 games tied at 86 wins. The Brewers ended up on top after winning 2 of the last 3 against the Marlins while the Cardinals lost 2 of their last 3 against the Pirates.

The offense had we not made the trades at the deadline probably would have been playoff-caliber. As a team, we hit .256/.322/.413 placing us 11th/16th/16th in the league. We were 12th in Runs with 708, Top 5 in Doubles (T-2nd 294), Triples (5th 45), Stolen Bases (2nd 149), and Stolen Base % (3rd .730) The Homeruns weren't as good as we hit 172 which was 22nd in the league. Strikeouts were also an issue as we finished 25th with 1245. It was only the second time since 1993 that we finished in the bottom half (17th in 2020). And as usual, we wouldn't take walks coming in at 24th with 521.

              Batting Stats
              Spoiler

Andrew Benintendi finished with the best season of his career unfortunately for us he is set to be a free agent this off-season. He won his first Silver Slugger Award with career highs in AB, Hits, HR, RBI, SLG%, OPS, and WAR.

Salvy wasn't as good as last year but lead the team in games while hitting 30 HR and winning his 3rd straight Silver Slugger and 5th overall.

Bobby Witt Jr. joined the award group taking home the Rookie of The Year. He hit .244/.316/.455 with 25 HR and 86 RBI while leading the team with 96 runs scored.

Bobby wasn't the only rookie that played well. Kyle Isbel played 111 games hitting .278/.338/.409 with 26 Doubles and 7 HR. M.J. Melendez played 49 games hitting .305/.359/.401. His power hasn't quite shown itself in the majors yet hitting only 2 in 177 AB.

Things weren't all good with the offense though. Vinnie Pasquantino put up an OPS of .632 before finishing the season on the IL. Pratto wasn't much better at .641 though he only had 59 at-bats. Hunter Dozier regressed for the 3rd season in a row putting up a .667 OPS and is still under contract for 2 more seasons.

The most surprising part of the season might have been Mondesi not getting hurt as he played a career-high 139 games. His bat wasnt great hitting .256 with a .294 OBP. But he lead the league with 16 triples. The most since 2011.

If there was one reason the team failed this season its the pitching. Particularly the starters. Our team ERA was 4.33 good for 22nd in the league. We were tied for 26th with 6 Shutouts, 21st in Blown Saves with 23, 21st in HR allowed with 204, 25th in Walks with 619, and 24th in Strikeouts with 1119.

              Pitching Stats
              Spoiler

Brad Keller had the lowest ERA among starters with 15 or more starts at 4.48. His K/9 was the lowest of his career at only 5.78 and his HR/9 was the highest of his career at 1.35.

The next best was Carlos Hernandez with a 4.70 ERA. Was expecting a little better from him after putting up a 3.68 ERA last season. Walks were a very big issue for him giving up 5.56 per 9.

Zack missed the last few weeks of the season with a torn pec. Maybe hoping for more from a 38-year-old was foolish as he put up an ERA of 4.73 and gave up a career-high 34 HR.

As for the bullpen while it did get worse in the 2nd half there is only so much they can do when they have to pitch 5+ innings every day. Josh Staumont put up 26 saves with a 2.02 ERA, Taylor Clarke pitched 116 innings with a 2.56 ERA, Domingo Tapia, Dylan Coleman, Jake Brentz, and Joel Payamps all finished with ERAs under 4 with Scott Barlow at 4.15 and Seth Elledge at 5.16.

Looking ahead to the offseason we have control of all but 2 players. Andrew Benintendi and Zack Greinke are both set to be free agents. I don't know if Greinke plans to retire but if he is playing again it won't be for us. As for Benintendi, we would love to have him back but after the season he had, he may want a bit more than we are willing to play. We probably need to get another OF. Maybe 2 if Benintendi leaves. And we will probably look at another veteran starter to replace Greinke. It's probably time to move on from Dozier as well. Would rather pay the 12.6 million we owe him to sit at home at this point.

The Rangers spent a lot of money this offseason on the likes of Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and Jon Gray. They then brought in a new GM/Manager in LegendKillerOne. Still this is a team that is considered on the bubble for a playoff spot. They have suspect starting and relief pitching and might need to out slug people on many nights to compete will they wait on many of their young guns to arrive.

                  Spring Training Moves

The Rangers made a few moves during the spring that lead to a big international signing.

The Rangers first released career minor league 1B Diosebel Arias. He was a 25 year old who never made it past AA and has been outright released.

They also needed to clear a 40 man roster spot and have placed RP Nick Snyder on waivers. If he makes it through he will be put in A

The Rangers wanted to jump into the fray once international free agent Masataka Tushida was posted and they did just that. They jumped in signing him to a 3 year 30 million dollar deal. Tushida spent last year in Japan. The 28 year old Hit .327 with 4 hr, 26rbi and a.458 OBP. He is a career .325 hitter with a .418 OBP

                  OF- M Toshida, N Solak, W Calhoun, A Garcia, L Tavares, K Calhoun

                  Future Looks Bright

While the current pitching situation needs work the future looks bright.

Jack Leiter and Cole Winn are both top prospects. Winn will start in AAA and Leiter in AA, Both could be up this year.

In the IF they have C Sam Huff starting in AAA, Justin Foscue in AAA at 2B, Ezequiel Duran in AA, Josh Jung in AA at 3B, Luisangel Acuna in AA at SS.

The OF has a little bit less in the wings but Evan Carter the 19th year old will start in A Ball

I play 1 sim 5 most of the time. I'll start the season playing through the first 5 to get through the rotation. Then i'll start the play 1 sim 5. So I play the first 6 games total then the next game I play is 12. Then do the same thing after the all-star break. If its late in the season and there is nothing to play for ill sim a lot more like I did this season. We were out of it and I wanted to play with guys like Pratto and Pasquantino but they were hurt so I just simmed most of September. And then if I call up a big prospect ill play their debut game or player lock as well. It comes out to like 40 ish games if you stick with it the whole season.

Diamondbacks get back on the right track with sweep of Pirates

The Arizona Diamondbacks came out swinging against the current worst team in the league. Game one saw Pirates rookie Quinn Priester making his second MLB start after getting called up on May 18th. The first start went well enough as Priester as he pitched for 7.1 innings while allowing just four hits, four walks, five strikeouts and no runs in a win against the Padres on May 28th.

This second start however, did not go quite as well. Wilmer Difo sent Priester's very first pitch into the stands and would later homer again. Difo wasnt the only one with two homeruns in the game. Ketel Marte also had two of his own and four hits total. Priester only lasted two innings as he gave up eight hits, seven runs and two walks. Pittsburgh had five runs of their own in the game but Arizona took game one, 9-5.

Game two was a low scoring affair that ended in a 2-0 victory for Arizona thanks to Carson Kelly and David Peralta hitting solo homeruns.

Game three was another great offensive game for the D-Backs that ended in a 11-3 victory. The eleven runs was the most scored by Arizona this season and just the third time the team has reached double digits in the run column.

Arizona NL West lead increased to 3.0 games over the Dodgers after they split a four game series with the Mets.

Arizona will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Cinncinati to take on the Reds (31-28, 2nd NL Central, 3.0 behind MIL).

Holy hits, 20 of them to be exact including a 106.3mph HR that landed 430ft and came off the bat of young Jared Kelenic. The Mariners had themselves a very productive offensive night beating the Detroit Tigers.

After the game Seattle skipper Scott Servais told the media that Dylan Moore was added to the roster as the 26th man. Servais said “I expect we’ll see him in action in the series finale vs Detroit tomorrow.”

Cardinals take series against rival Cubs

The Cardinals (61-49) took 2 games of a 3 game series with the Cubs in St.Louis. The Cardinals lead the Brewers by a game in the NL Central Division.

The Cardinals won the first two games of the series but failed to pull off the sweep on Thursday. The Cardinals won Tuesday night in memorable fashion scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th to comeback and win 7-6. Wednesday they were never challenged in 6-2 victory. Thursday was Matthew Boyd's first start with the Cards and he was roughed up early (4 runs in first two innings of work) but settled down to get thru 6 innings, but took the loss as the offense couldn't generate any runs in a 6-1 loss.

The Cardinals will welcome the Yankees to town this weekend for a 3 game series. The Yankees come in having lost 10 straight games.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
