The Braves have re-signed 1B Freddie Freeman to a 5 year/$151MM deal. The 33 year old Freeman will now likely finish his career in Atlanta providing he's not traded at some point over the next several years.

Freeman slashed .309/.399/.530 with 30 homeruns and 92 RBI's last year for the Braves who reached the World Series for a second consecutive season, but came up short this time around.

With the core pretty much still intact, the Braves will likely be a favorite again to return to the postseason and be World Series contenders.

Just barely avoided a four game sweep by the Dodgers with my offensively challenged Mets. Scherzer took a shutout in to the 7th but gave up a solo HR to make it 1-0. Then in the 9th I get two singles by McNeil and Cahna and a pinch hit hit by pitch by Dom Smith to load the bases with one out. A Brandon Nimmo single ties the game and then on a 3-2 count with the bases loaded and runners in motion I get an opposite field single from Starling Marte to score two and we go on to win 3-1, stopping the losing streak at three

Mariners look for answers after dropping to 3-7 on the Spring heading into the off day 03/09/22 before taking on the Brewers. Offense has struggled putting balls in play, leaving runners on base and in scoring position. Manager Scott Servais said “We just have to take advantage of opportunities and execute if we want to win ballgames. These guys are working their tails off in preparation for the season opener coming in just a few short weeks.”

Cardinals re-sign Jack Flaherty to one deal avoiding arbitration

The Cardinals and SP Jack Flaherty have agreed to a one year $12MM deal for next season and avoiding arbitration. This was the last year of control the Cards had on the 27 year old.

The Cardinals tried to lock up Flaherty to a long term deal, but he was deadset on signing just a one year deal and seeing where things lie going into next offseason. My guess would be that he will test the free agent market.

Flaherty went 14-5 this past season with a 2.92 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 204 innings of work. He will again be the ace of the staff and will hopefully get better support both from the offense and fell arms in the rotation. Right now the only other guaranteed arm is Miles Mikolas who is in the final year of his contract.

          Cardinals resign Yadier Molina

Was there any doubt when the 40 year old didn't retire? The Cardinals and Yadi agreed to a one year $5M deal as the longtime backstop for the Cards gives it one more run to reach the postseason. Yadi struggled last year and dealt with injuries, but he was still a gunslinger behind the plate and helped guide an inconsistent pitching staff. Its expected that Yadi's workload will be less this year in hopes of keeping him healthy and maybe more productive.

His longtime battery mate Adam Wainwright didn't hang up his cleats either after the 2022 season, so there is the real possibility of a reunion. The Cards have reached out, but nothing more has become of that initial interaction.

That was a great deal for Flaherty, but I know you preferred to lock him for some years.

Cardinals re-sign Harrison Bader and Giovanny Gallegos to 5 year deals

The Cardinals avoided arbitration with 2 of their players and signed both to a 5 year deal.

              Harrison Bader signed a 5 year/$77.50MM contract

              Giovanny Gallegos signed a 5 year/$60MM contract

Harrison Bader is an elite outfielder who only needs his bat to get more consistent to be an all-star caliber player year in and year out. Bader got better as the season went along and he moved from the leadoff spot to the number 8 spot in the order. Bader slashed .251/.337/.437 in 111 games for the Cardinals last year and popped 16 homeruns with 54 RBIs. He also drew 50 walks last year, the most of his career.

Giovanny Gallegos was the stopper last year and will be this year and for years to come. Gallegos saved 41 games in 44 chances and pitched to a 1.85 ERA.

Two big long term signings for the Cardinals as they look to build a team that can lead them back to the postseason next year.

Braves sweep Tigers. Brings my record to 19-10
However, I am frustrated. Up until this point I've played every pitch and I forgot to save after the last game of the series and I did not want to play it again so I just simmed it. Still got the win but man, I hate when that happens.

Anyway, I'm in May now. Still 1st in NL East.
Olson and Swanson lead the team in HRs with 8 each. Alex Dickerson is leading in BA hitting .385 in 39 ABs. Swanson leads the team in hits with 32.
Swanson is the only player to have played every game.
Morton leads the team in SOs with 48! in 35 innings pitched. Tyler Matzek has an ERA of 0.00 in 14.1 innings pitched. Morton leads the team in wins with 4.

Cardinals and Adam Wainwright agree to one year deal

The band is back together. After signing Yadier Molina to a one year deal, the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright agreed to a one year deal worth $6M. Wainwright and Molina will give it one more run in hopes of returning to the postseason in 2023.

Wainwright was 12-11 last year in 32 starts. He pitched 205 innings to the tune of a 3.73 ERA. He's not the strikeout caliber pitcher he once was (125 last year) but he still has enough stuff to keep hitters off balance and inducing weak contact.

There are rumblings that Waino could be part of the bullpen in 2023 serving as a spot starter or long relief should the Cards elect to give some of the young arms a chance crack the Opening Day roster.

                      Aaron Judge resigns with Yankees

Aaron Judge flirted with free agency and expectedly saw a lot of suitors. But at the end of the day Judge elected to return to the Bronx on a 10 year/$240MM contract.

The 30 year old hit .261 last year with 35 homeruns and 97 RBI's. He will once again be a staple in the middle of that pinstripe lineup in the Bronx.

Joey Gallo signs with the Dodgers

Joey Gallo has signed a 5 year/$64MM deal to play in Los Angeles this year with the Dodgers.

Gallo's market was pretty mundane this offseason after slashing .243/.370/.453 with 28 homeruns and 78 RBI's for the Yankees last year. But he struck out 234 times in 510 at-bats, so there was obviously concern about his ability to put the ball in play on a regular basis.

Still Gallo will fit somewhere in the Dodgers lineup, likely left field or first base as the Dodgers lost Max Muncy to the Astros in free agency.

Gallo helps a potent lineup stay scary.

Cardinals sign Anthony Rizzo to one year deal

                        Look away Cubs fans.

The Cardinals have signed 1B Anthony Rizzo to a one year/$10MM deal. The Cardinals outbid the Yankees, Cubs, Dodgers, and Red Sox.

The 33 year old Rizzo hit .295 with 26 homeruns and 93 RBIs last year in the Bronx. He hit free agency and with the Cardinals looking for a left handed bat in a right handed dominant lineup, this was a signing that was hard to pass up.

Now the question obviously is what about Goldschmidt? Well the Cardinals are actively shopping Goldy as they look to get out from under the $52M that he's owed over the next two seasons ($26M each year). It was a tough decision but with Goldschmidt slumping down the stretch, his contract (given what the Cards were going to spend this offseason), and him being right handed, he is a prime candidate to move.

Based on trade discussion thread, I moved Aaron Civale for Alex Verdugo to finally get a young high talented OF at the major league level.

Gives me a 2023 opening day line up of

                          Gimenez/Straw
                          Kwan
                          JRam
                          Verdugo
                          Josh Naylor (DH)
                          Nolan Jones/Valera
                          Valera/Snyder
                          Bo Naylor
                          Freeman

Platoon Valera and Straw since Straw hits lefties so well, and Valera developed into a 70 contact 56 power hitter in 22 in AA vs rhp.

Platoon Jones and Snyder at 1B, play Jones vs RHP and Snyder vs LHP.

Rotation of Bieber, Mckenzie, Espino, Quantrill and Plesac with the potential of Williams or Allen moving into the rotation through the season.

Started 7-3 and Valera has been a beast, 5 HRs already.

Espino is 2-0, hasn't allowed a run, and has 29 Ks in 12 IP, since I'm taking the some what realistic approach of easing him into the bifs with only 5 or 6 IP in the first 4 or 5 starts.

We will be a force in 2024

                            2022 Arizona Diamondbacks 07/04-07/06

Overall Record:51-36 (2nd in NL West, .5 behind LA Dodges)

Arizona drops series to San Francisco 2-1

In the first season series between the Giants and Diamondbacks, San Francisco took the victory two games to one. The first two games ended in favor of the Giants, 3-2 and 5-4.

The biggest story of the series was Arizona's top starting pitcher, Zac Gallen suffering a freak head contusion in the second inning of his game two start. Gallen wasnt hit by a line drive, didnt dive for a ball but somehow, suffered a head injury. Replays showed that he actually smacked himself during his follow through (not really but I dunno what happened lol).

Gallen is tied for the MLB lead in wins with 11 and before his odd departure, became the first Arizona pitcher to 100 strike outs on the season. (next closest is Bumgarner with 73). He was also on the short list for the NL Cy Young, an award he likely wont have a chance to win after he is out for these next two or three starts.

Corbin Martin was moved from his long relief role to the starting rotation and is scheduled to make his first start of the season next Sunday against the Colorado Rockies.

The series ended with another great pitching performance by Madison Bumgarner as he willed a struggling offense to a 2-1 victory to avoid the sweep.

Arizona stays at home to face off against the Rockies (44-42) who currently sit in last place in the division.

Cardinals trade Paul Goldschmidt to the Yankees

The Cardinals and Yankees have agreed to a deal that will send 1B Paul Goldschmidt to the Yankees in exchange for RHP Luis Medina and LHP Guiseppe Fernandez.

Goldschmidt became expendable after the Cards signed former Yankee first baseman Anthony Rizzo in free agency.

The Cardinals will get pitching in return something they focused on heavily this offseason.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(
