September 11-13: FLAGSTAFF (81-66) @ SALT LAKE (78-69)
    Stadium: Deseret Field (Capacity: 17,423)

    September 11: Hops 5, Chukars 2
    September 12: Hops 2, Chukars 1
    September 13: Chukars 5, Hops 3

Salt Lake City, UT (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops went into the newly renovated Deseret Field and took two of three from Salt Lake to increase their lead in the ML West to three games over the Chukars.

The Hops opened up a huge three-game series in Salt Lake City with a big 5-2 victory over the second-place Chukars. Isaac Nettles went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs to help pace a 13 hit attack in the victory.

Salt Lake would grab a 1-0 lead in the first inning off of Ramon Garcia on a Robby Payne RBI double. It would remain that way into the top of the sixth inning. Isaac Nettles ripped an RBI double that scored Forrest Owen to tie the ballgame. Josh Ortega then singled home Robbie Westbrook and the Hops went up 2-1.

Emmitt Hampton came through with a big two-out RBI single in the eighth to increase the Hops lead to 3-1. That run would be big as J.P. Grant homered to open the bottom of the eighth for Salt Lake. It was Grant’s 22nd on the season and cut the lead to 3-2.

Flagstaff would then add two big insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Robbie Westbrook lined a two-out RBI single back up the middle to score Roberto Geronimo, and Isaac Nettles followed that up with an RBI single of his own to put the Hops up by three.

Closer Vic Miller came on and gave up a single and got a pop out, but then had to leave the game with an undisclosed injury. Samuel Espinoza came on and got the final two outs to secure his first career save.

Ramon Garcia (10-7) picked up the win, pitching five solid innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out four and walking two. Russell Fluty, Pedro Macias, Vic Miller and Samuel Espinoza finished off the game with four solid innings out of the pen.

Roberto Geronimo went 2 for 4 with a run scored and had two stolen bases for the Hops as he is looking to get out of his slump.

After the game, closer Vic Miller was evaluated and the news was good. He just had a bicep strain and should only miss a few days. The club recalled closer Fernando Benitez from Triple-A Albuquerque and placed reliever Sam Varela on optional assignment waivers.

On Tuesday evening, the Hops pulled out a tight pitcher’s duel with a 2-1 victory to secure a series win and move four games ahead of the Chukars in the ML West. Shoe-Lace O’Tying (13-8) tossed a strong seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out a season high 12.

The Chukars would grab the lead in the second inning on a Darell McCloud RBI double, scoring Rafael Geronimo.

The Hops responded immediately as David Benitez hit a solo home run to left to tie the game at 1-1. It would remain that way until the sixth when Robbie Westbrook came through with a solo home run to put the Hops in front 2-1. It was his 34th on the season.

Pedro Macias worked a 1-2-3 eighth and rookie Fernando Benitez, making his debut, was able to lock down the Chukars in the ninth to pick up his first career save.

Thor Odinson (13-10) picked up the loss, tossing five plus innings and allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out five.

Art Mason, who lead the ML with a .325 batting average, went 1 for 4 and stole his 30th base on the year.

In the finale, the Chukars hit three home runs and took advantage of a not so sharp outing from Ryan Pressley to avoid a sweep with a 5-3 victory.

Salt Lake would grab a 3-0 lead in the second on a John Scott three-run home run to right, it was his second on the year.

The Hops would get one back in the top of the third on an Isaac Nettles RBI single that scored Phillip Choi. But the Chukars answered right back as J.P. Grant launched a long home run to right to make it 4-1 in the bottom half of the third.

Flagstaff would chip away at that lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh. After a Robbie Westbrook leadoff double in the sixth, a pair of groundouts would send Westbrook home to cut the lead to just two. Donnie Roland then hit a solo homer to open the seventh to cut it to 4-3. But that would be as close as the Hops would get.

Sergio Pinto lead off the eighth with a solo home run off of Oliver Benedict to give the Chukars a bit of a cushion heading into the ninth. Closer Emmitt Franco would send the Hops down in order to pick up his 39th save and help the Chukars avoid what would have been a disastrous sweep.

Ryan Pressley (14-10) took the loss and didn’t have his best stuff. He pitched six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while striking out eight and walking three. Vergil Wray (6-6) picked up the win for the Chukars. He went six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out two.

Flagstaff (81-66) will close out their road trip with three at St George (73-73) before returning home to face Salt Lake.

Around the League: Rio Rancho sent El Paso to their fifth straight loss, 13-8 on Monday evening. The loss dropped the Blue Rocks into a first place tie with Santa Fe. The Owlz are now just one game back of Salt Lake for the second ML Wild Card.

Gilbert opened up a huge series with Chandler with a 5-3 victory on Tuesday evening. David Lee (13-6) picked up the win, pitching 6 1/3 inning and allowing three runs on five hits, striking out six and walking five, as the Barnstormers moved back to within four games of first-place Chandler.

San Diego’s Matt Campbell (14-7) tossed a complete game five hitter, striking out eight, in a 1-0 victory for the Seals over Colorado Springs.

Henderson defeated Las Vegas 8-2 in the opener of a huge series for the top two teams in the DL West. The Silver Knights moved 1 1/2 games up on the Nuggets with the win. Albert Zambrano went 3 for 5 with a home run and five RBIs in the victory. On Wednesday evening, the Silver Knights scored five times in the bottom of the eighth to pull out a 7-2 victory. Buddy Jordan keyed the win with a grand slam in the eighth, his 23rd on the season. The Silver Knights swept the two game series and now lead Las Vegas by 2 1/2 games in the DL West.

Sam Robinson went 2 for 5 with two home runs and seven RBIs for St George in a 14-2 victory over San Antonio that keeps the Archers within shouting distance of a ML Wild Card birth.

Rio Rancho won its fourth straight and 11 of 12 as they defeated El Paso 8-6 to complete the sweep. The Blue Rocks have dropped seven straight and have fallen out of first place in the ML Central. A first inning grand slam from Avery Phillips keyed Santa Fe to a 6-4 victory over last place Albuquerque and moved the Silver Bullets into first place.

I’m thinking if I can win 3 of the 7 games I’ll be in pretty good shape to hold off the Phillies since my other three games are against a horrible Marlins team, although the Mets are no stranger to September meltdowns against the Marlins

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

This game amazes me in all kinds of different ways. I’ve been playing since 2006 or so and I’m still (!) making boneheaded mistakes like putting a relief pitcher into the game when my intention was to sit him down. Unbelievable. (And for the record, and in the spirit of “comeback code,” I 100% feel I should lose this game now because of a mistake like that.)

18-15 in May of 2024, 3.5 GB of MIN.

This is the most immersed I’ve ever been in a franchise. I’ve got Colt Keith, Justyn-Henry Malloy and Parker Meadows all up and playing well, some subtle upgrades (FA signings of RHP Miguel Castro, RHP Phil Bickford & LHP Jake Brentz; traded Austin Meadows to CIN for Nick Senzel; FA signings of Odubel Herrera & Miguel Sano) but otherwise working with the irl roster; so Greene, Tork, Baez, Carpenter, Vierling, Baddoo, McKinstry, etc.

Finished 2023 above .500 but missed the playoffs. I think we can make the playoffs this year. Mize, Skubal, Manning & ERod are nice. Bullpen is nice. We’re pretty good.

          Cheers.
          Just one man’s opinion.
I don’t actually care about any of this.

Chicago White Sox Franchise: 2023 ALCS Game Four vs Los Angeles Angels

            White Sox Lead Series: 2-1

In what was close to a do or die game for the Angels, Shohei Ohtani would once again take the mound. This time he would face Mike Clevinger, who in his lone postseason start threw seven scoreless innings against the Cleveland Guardians.

Things went really clean for both pitchers in the first inning, as the duo combined for just 21 pitches total. Ohtani in particular made the top of the order for Chicago in Tim Anderson, Andrew Benintendi, and Eloy Jimenez look really off balanced.

The second inning continued the same way for Clevinger, grinding through 20 pitches, but going three up and three down. Ohtani would get Robert out to start the second before walking Oscar Colas. Up would step Yoan Moncada, the most consistent White Sox hitter of the postseason, and he would deliver again with a double up the gap to score Colas. White Sox up 1-0.

The lead wouldn’t last long, though, as Clevinger would quickly work through the first two batters of the third before Max Stassi would barely clear the fence for a homer to tie it up.

The pitchers would settle in a bit and the next bit of offense would come in the bottom of the fourth. Ohtani would walk Jimenez to start the inning before Robert would single into left. After a Colas strikeout, Moncada would come up again and hit a hard single to right, but Jimenez wasn’t able to score from second. Ohtani now faced the bases loaded with Seby Zavala at the plate and only one out. Ohtani would dig deep and strike out Zavala before getting a fly out from Gavin Sheets. The game was still tied at 1-1.

Clevinger would immediately give up a double to Hunter Renfroe in the fifth inning, followed by an infield single by Jared Walsh. Runners on first and third with no outs, it was now time for Clevinger to find some magic. He forced a shallow fly out from Brandon Drury to hold the runnings. Gio Urshella would strike out swinging, before Clevinger got revenge on Stassi by striking him out as well, this time looking.

With the crisis averted from both pitchers there, one would think things might settle down again, but it was not to be. Benintendi would step up in the bottom of the fifth and get a middle-middle fastball and put it into the bullpen off of Ohtani. White Sox up 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, with Ohtani still pitching, Robert would get on first with a single and immediately steal second. Colas would strike out looking, but Zavala would come up with his biggest hit of the season, nailing a double into the left center gap. White Sox were now up 3-1 and had chased Ohtani out.

On the other side, Clevinger was next level dealing, routinely getting through innings in 8-11 pitches. The Angels were getting no hard contact on him outside of a Trout double in the sixth that was just an excellent hustle play and caught the White Sox off guard. Clevinger was continuing the White Sox tradition of striking out Ohtani as well, doing so three times, good for 11 total for Ohtani in four games. Clevinger’s final line would be eight innings, one run allowed on five hits with 10 strikeouts.

Up 3-1, the White Sox would add on nicely in the bottom of the eighth, with Moncada yet again driving in Robert, this time on a single, before Elvis Andrus drove in a run of his own later by knocking in Colas to make it 5-1.

Liam Hendriks would come in in the top of the ninth, and while Ohtani would finally do some damage with his third homer of the series, there was otherwise no drama. The White Sox dominated once again, as Clevinger has only given up a combined seven hits in 15 postseason innings, and took advantage of an Angels offense that has gone ice cold since scoring eight in a game one win. Now, the White Sox have a chance to go to the World Series with ace Dylan Cease on the mound in game five.

White Sox 5-2, take their series lead up to 3-1.

              2024 Washington Nationals

Oakland Athletics (1-4) vs Washington Nationals (1-4)

Game One: Brent Honeywell Jr. vs Cade Cavalli

Oakland manufactured a run in the second but Anthony Rizzo hit his fourth home run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at one. Cavalli was inconsistent in his location early, walking three in just the first two innings. Jeremy Eierman, who scored the earlier run after a walk, would hit a three run home run in the third. He also was a thorn in the side of the Nationals when these two clubs played last in 2023. Gleyber Torres hit a solo home run in the fourth to make it a 4-2 game, but Oakland scored again in the fifth when Sean Murphy singled to bring in Darin Kaiser, who led off the inning with a walk. That was the end of the day for Cade Cavalli, he would go 4 innings, giving up six runs on six hits, walking four and striking out two. The Nationals would turn to their Rule 5 pick, Zach Warren, making this his Major League debut. Two more runs would score in the inning (one charged to Cavalli, the other to Warren, making it 7-2. This seven run outpouring equaled Oaklands total number of runs scored in their four previous games coming into this series. The Nationals had a great chance to score in the bottom of the sixth, having the bases loaded following back to back two out walks, but Lane Thomas struck out and the threat went by the wayside. Hunter Harvey would pitch the top of the seventh and strike out the side on 10 pitches…nearly an immaculate inning. The Athletics would score one more run off of Zach Davies in the ninth and cruise to an easy victory.

Game Two: Paul Blackburn vs Stephen Strasburg
Blackburn and Strasburg battled it out for the first two thirds of the game. Strasburg would leave after six innings, giving up a run (RBI single by Jeremy Eierman) on four hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Blackburn went seven full, giving up no runs on four hits, walking one and striking out four. It was an ugly game, especially for Washington. Poor pitch selection, poor execution, and lack of plate discipline saw them struggling to mount any offense against what is probably the worst team in baseball, BUT, the pitching staff kept them in the game and they entered the ninth inning trailing just 1-0. Brandon Nimmo led off with a base hit against AJ Puk before Luis Garcia and Brandon Drury struck out. Anthony Rizzo saved the game by hitting his fifth home run in as many games to give the Nationals a shocking and fortunate walk off victory. Did they deserve to win? Probably not, but you have to take advantage of the weaker teams on the schedule and they were able to steal a game here.

Game Three: Cole Irvin vs MacKenzie Gore
MacKenzie Gore struck out the first four batters he faced and was perfect through three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth, loading the bases with nobody out. He would get a double play ball, allowing a run to score, and then Jeremy Eierman hit an infield single to score a second run. The Nationals would cut the lead in half on a ground ball by Anthony Rizzo in the sixth, but Oakland would rally again, this time off Zach Davies in the seventh. He would load the bases and Magnerius Sierra would drop down a bunt on a squeeze play and still reach first for a base hit. Logan Davidson, who played a stellar shortstop in this game, would hit a sac fly and make it a 4-1 advantage for the A’s. The Nationals mounted a ninth inning rally, getting a lead off home run from Brandon Drury and an RBI single from Mitch Haniger, but could not drive the tying run across despite having runners on second and third with only one out.

The Nationals (2-5) are off to a rough start, and they will now have their first off day before flying to LA to take on the Dodgers (5-2)

The Mets just finished a four game set vs the Phillies. We were able to win close games in the first two of the series but the Phillies jumped out to a 7-0 lead on David Peterson and Drew Smith in the third game. We were able to claw back and at least make it interesting but the Phillies held on for a 7-4 win. Game four was a bloodbath with the Phillies tagging Verlander for five runs in two and a third and Drew Smith for another five. The Phillies would go on to win 14-4. Six games left and the Mets have a two game lead on the Phillies and three on the Braves.

The action kicked off in the second inning when Jake Cronenworth stepped up to the plate and launched a solo home run, giving the Padres an early lead. Not long after, Oscar Mercado added to the fireworks with a powerful two-run homer, extending the Padres' advantage.

The Padres' offensive onslaught continued in the fourth inning, as both Gary Sanchez and Ha-Seong Kim blasted home runs, further solidifying their team's control of the game. The Padres' hitters demonstrated their ability to connect with the long ball, thrilling the home crowd.

However, it wasn't just the Padres' explosive offense that stole the show. Their starting pitcher, Yu Darvish, delivered a remarkable performance on the mound. Darvish dominated the Rockies' lineup, pitching six scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. His impeccable command and devastating pitches befuddled the Rockies' hitters, as he struck out an impressive eight batters.

In a thrilling matchup at Petco Park, the San Diego Padres showcased their resilience and determination as they mounted an incredible comeback to defeat the Colorado Rockies by a score of 4-3. Despite an early lead by the Rockies, the Padres refused to back down, rallying behind their power hitters to secure a memorable victory.

The game started with the Rockies taking an early advantage in the top of the first inning. CJ Cron, displaying his power, smashed a two-run home run, marking his second long ball of the season. This early offensive surge put the Rockies ahead, leaving the Padres with some catching up to do.

The Rockies continued to apply pressure in the second inning, extending their lead to 3-0 with Brenton Doyle's sacrifice fly. However, Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove showed tremendous composure, settling down and finding his rhythm on the mound. Musgrove's ability to regain control after a challenging start set the stage for the Padres' comeback.

It was in the fourth inning that the Padres' bats started to come alive. Xander Bogaerts, known for his power-hitting prowess, launched a two-run home run, igniting a spark of hope within the San Diego faithful. Bogaerts' timely blast narrowed the Rockies' lead to just one run, injecting new energy into the game.

The momentum continued to swing in favor of the Padres in the sixth inning. With Manny Machado at the plate, the charismatic slugger delivered a clutch two-run home run that propelled the Padres into the lead for the first time in the game. Machado's blast not only put the Padres ahead but also electrified the crowd, turning Petco Park into a frenzy of cheers and celebration.

The Padres' pitching staff held their ground, with reliever Josh Hader stepping up to the mound in the ninth inning to close out the game. Hader, known for his dominant performances, showcased his skills and recorded his first save of the year, shutting down the Rockies' offense and securing the Padres' hard-fought victory.

                    WP: Joe Musgrove (1-0)
                    LP: Jake Bird (0-1)
                    S: Josh Hader (1)

                      2024 Washington Nationals

Washington Nationals (2-5) vs Los Angeles Dodgers (5-2)

Game One: Lucas Giolito vs Jack Flaherty
Lane Thomas hit a solo home run in the top of the third, but Cody Bellinger responded with a home run of his own in the bottom half. Keibert Ruiz would drive in Anthony Rizzo with a fielder’s choice in the fourth, but LA answered with a Freedie Freeman RBI single in the sixth. Brady House hit his first home run of the year in the seventh, and Luis Garcia would later single to score Brandon Nimmo. Aaron Bummer would come in in the eighth and load the bases before giving up a two run single to Mookie Betts to tie the game at four. The Nationals launched their last rally in the top of the ninth; Brandon Nimmo doubled and scored on a Luis Garcia single, and Anthony Rizzo would hit a two run home run to put the Nationals on top 7-4. Trevor Rosenthal would come in and retire the side 1-2-3 for his first save of the year.

Game Two: Josiah Gray vs Dustin May
Anthony Rizzo drove in Luis Garcia in the first to put the Nationals on top early, and Brandon Nimmo singled in the second to score Gleyber Torres and put Washington up 2-0, but LA rallied in the bottom of the second; scoring 4: two on a triple from J.P Crawford and two on a Joey Gallo home run. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the fourth but only managed one run, on a Cody Bellinger fielder’s choice, but they would score another three runs in the fifth: Austin Barnes hit an RBI single, JP Crawford grounded out to score Mookie Betts, and Cody Bellinger hit a sac fly to make it 8-2 Dodgers. But, as we saw in the NLDS last year, and in last night’s game as well, the Nationals matchup against LA very well, and they mounted a five run rally in the sixth: Mitch Haniger led off with a solo home run, and then Keibert Ruiz reached on an error, ending the day for Dustin May. Tony Gonsolin came in and gave up a single to Brady House and a three run home run to Brandon Nimmo, a double to Luis Garcia and an RBI double to Brandon Drury. The Nats then tied it in the top of the seventh when Mitch Haniger hit his second solo home run of the day. The game would remain tied going into the 9th, with Brusdar Graterol coming out for his second inning of work. He got two quick outs before giving up a single to Lane Thomas, and a two run home run to former Dodgers prospect Keibert Ruiz, putting the Nationals up 10-8. Victor Arano, who was already warmed up in the ‘pen, would come in in the ninth and get the save. And once again, the Nationals fight back and stun the Dodgers.

Game Three: Cade Cavalli vs Tyler Anderson
The Dodgers scored their first run after just 2 pitches. Trea Turner doubled on the first pitch of the game and Gavin Lux drove him in with a base hit on the very next toss. Joey Gallo hit a three run home run in the second. It seemed that Cavalli started settling in after the second, but then with two outs in the fourth Cody Bellinger hit an RBI double (he was thrown out trying to extend it to a triple) and then Joey Gallo hit another home run. Making it 6-0 Dodgers. That would be all for this one; Tyler Anderson went seven full, giving up no runs on five hits, no walks and six strikeouts and Ryne Stanek pitched the last two innings to help the Dodgers avoid being swept by Washington. The only good news to come out of this game was Zach Davies, who went four innings of relief, giving up zero runs on four hits; he also struck out three.

Washington (4-6) will leave LA and will take on the Texas Rangers (5-5) in a two game series before coming home to play the Marlins. The calls for Felipe Escalona are already mounting, just 10 games into the season…as Josiah Gray, Cade Cavalli and Zach Davies (as a long reliever) have all been struggling.

                        Well this is embarrassing ...

I was worried about rust after not playing in a couple of months, but had a 9-0 lead going to the bottom of the 6th in the opener against the Nats. Strider hadn't allowed a hit yet.

An Orlando Arcia error opened the door for them to score four in that frame. They added four more against an ineffective Tyler Matzek in the 8th; and then walked it off with two more home runs in the 9th. So from a 9-0 lead to an 11-10 loss. Crazy game.

PADRES TAKE 3 OF 4 IN THE OPENING SERIES

GAME 3: The San Diego Padres emerged victorious with a dominant 5-0 win against the Colorado Rockies in game 3 of the season. The Padres' pitching staff was in top form, stifling the Rockies' offense throughout the game.

Starting pitcher Blake Snell led the way for the Padres, delivering a fantastic performance on the mound. Snell showcased his exceptional skills by pitching six innings, tallying an impressive 10 strikeouts while not allowing a single run. His command and ability to keep the Rockies' batters off-balance played a crucial role in the Padres' shutout victory.

On the offensive side, shortstop Xander Bogaerts played a key role in the Padres' success. Bogaerts had a productive day at the plate, going 2-4 with a triple and contributing two runs batted in (RBIs). His timely hits provided valuable support for the team, helping to build their lead and secure the win.

Adding to the Padres' offensive firepower, second baseman Rougned Odor launched a solo home run in the eighth inning. Odor's contribution provided insurance for the team, further extending their lead and solidifying their control over the game.

Superstar OF Fernando Tatis Jr. also made his presence felt at the plate, going 2-4 and driving in a run. Tatis Jr.'s offensive prowess and ability to produce runs proved vital in the Padres' victory.

The Padres' bullpen was equally impressive, with relief pitchers Steven Wilson, Luis Garcia, and Tim Hill combining to throw one scoreless inning each. Their ability to shut down the Rockies' offense in the late innings helped seal the shutout and secure the win for the Padres.

GAME 4: In a closely contested matchup, the Colorado Rockies secured their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Padres. The game featured outstanding pitching performances from both teams, keeping the score tight throughout.

Starting for the Rockies, Ty Blach displayed his best form on the mound, limiting the Padres' offense to just three hits over 4.2 innings. Blach's strong outing included five strikeouts, as he effectively kept the Padres' batters off balance. His ability to consistently locate his pitches proved crucial in preventing the Padres from generating scoring opportunities.

For the Padres, Michael Wacha started the game and delivered an impressive performance of his own. Wacha threw six scoreless innings, allowing only five hits while striking out six Rockies batters. His command and ability to mix his pitches effectively kept the Rockies' offense at bay, giving the Padres a chance to compete.

The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning when the Rockies' offense finally broke through. Facing Padres' elite set-up man Robert Suarez, Charlie Blackmon stepped up to the plate and launched a two-run home run, his first of the season. Blackmon's clutch hit provided the decisive runs for the Rockies, giving them the lead they would ultimately hold onto.

Despite the Padres' strong pitching performance, their offense couldn't muster enough runs to overcome the Rockies' late surge. The Rockies' pitching staff, anchored by Ty Blach and aided by their bullpen, effectively shut down the Padres' offense throughout the game, securing the 2-0 victory.

Learned my lesson to not relax with a big lead and hammered the Nats 9-1 in the second game. Austin Riley is off to a blistering start with two homers and seven RBIs in the first two games.

Since I'm sticking with this franchise, I'll post how I've set things up.

Juan Soto is off to a terrible start hitting .056 (1/18). I finally had a break out game where he went 3-4 with 2 HRS and for some reason it didn't save!!
