Re: Official MLB 11 The Show - Impressions Thread

first off.. I've been getting annoyed with this game to the extreme.. so I decided to go all out analog controls and use the "experienced" setting with very minor slider adjustments (wind down to 3, pitch speed 4, both errors at 6, cpu pitch consist at 3). I know this setting is easy but I'll up to all-star or higher after I get the hang of analog hitting.

here are the results. yankees (me) @ red sox.

the major difference I noticed between zone hitting and analog is with analog I get way more singles. maybe in zone I was just going for HR's all the time but analog seems to work. I even got 3 walks.. that's amazing in itself.

normally Beckett owns my soul but I destroyed him and had 9 runs in one inning.. then they put in Wakefield's cheesy knuckleball and that slowed me down til the later innings... (the fact he threw his knuckleball for a strike at a 97% clip is laughable)

I do wanna point out that I still believe CPU comeback logic is in this game. the Red Sox put a furious comeback on me.. which the CPU does seemingly every game. I did have a stupid error that cost me 2 outs thanks to analog fielding though... and Rivera got shelled (he sucks in The Show, always has)

if you're getting frustrated with the game.. just do what I did.. go all out analog controls and see what happens. I'm not expecting 12-11 games every time but I know damn well I wouldn't get one with zone hitting.

I started playing with Fast Play and man it picks up the tempo quite a bit. I enjoyed the game already especially all the nuances that go with the game, the stat overlays and replays, but the games where just taking forever(not a bad thing). Then I switched to fast play and I really enjoyed the pace. I do miss the stat overlays and replay frequency but for my taste the tempo was great.

Yeah I play fast play for 90% of my games. I usually turn it off for big series or for series openers in a stadium I haven't seen yet.

true. but It usually takes me 2 to 3 sittings to finish one game. That is ridiculous. I like the nuances of baseball, but fast play takes the little things out, and the result of this is the loss of being completely immersed in the game.

A nice balance probably does exist within all the settings options. However I find the settings list and features overwhelming.

the game is solid, and its extremely deep.
The game is obviously for baseball purists. The game, to put it mildly, is a bit cumbersome.
The developers and producers of this game are clearly "baseball geeks" (not a criticism).
IMO, you have to be passionate about baseball to enjoy this game.

Again, I do like the game with all of its features, but Im really having a hard time getting into this game. Maybe once thee basball season gets in full swing Ill enjoy The SHOW 11 more.

The game does provide a good challenge, but one shouldbnt feel like they have to labor through an entire game. I guess that is as true siim/realistic as it gets.

I guess Im saying the game is a "mixed bag". Meaning there is alot to like, but theres also alot to dislike.

That is probably what I will do If I ever start a franchise. I plan to start a RTTS player soon, but right now I am just playing the game and learning all the mechanics.

Another option for speeding games up without losing presentation is to fast forward to a certain inning.

Some guys play the first 3, simulate the middle 3, then play the last 3

                The variations are endless

You sound like me lol. I lose just about every game by 1 run. Except for last night.

I'm the Mets and I was playing the Astros. They score 1 run in the top of the 1st, I tied it at 1 in the bottom of the 1st. No scoring until about the 5th or 6th, they HR off me to take 2-1 lead. So I figure oh well another 1 run loss because bottom of the 9th still trailing 2-1. Jason Bay is out injured so I'm playing Scott Hairston in LF for now. He leads off the 9th gets into 0-2 count right away and fouls off about 10000000000 pitches lol. He gets a hit down the 3rd baseline but held to a single because the ball caroms off the wall right to the fielder. Next up is Ike Davis, 1st pitch fastball up and in...WALKOFF WIN 3-2!!!!!!!

He totally crushed it, it was WAYYYYY out of Citi Field. I was totally excited I don't remember the distance lol but it had to be 450 ft plus!

                      Yea I love this game!

thats what turned me off to the game.
tooooo boring. and I am 30 year certified baseball nut.
                          lol

also I wouldnt call the people who make the game baseball geeks.
Geeks are into the minutiae of stats and number crunching. like me. this series get an F in that regard. if they were geeks we'd be inundated with numbers.
huge baseball fans is what I'd call them.

my final impressions as I am calling it a year after two separate sessions with the game are this:

                          the good gets greater.
                          the bad gets worse.

now if they an just get the bad to 'goods/great [commentary/stat overlays/menus then I'll be back with the series.
in the meantime I have found a different fix for my baseball gaming needs.
I'll see ya round the wishlist thread, then again during the 12' coverboy talk conversation.

                          enjoy 11 fellas.

Honestly, you just described baseball, lol. A game in real life can take 3+ hours, so IMO, the fact that SCEA has essentially been able to capture ALL of that atmosphere and those little nuances into something that only takes about an hour, hour and a half, is pretty damn impressive. You can "X" through a lot of it if you're in a rush, or use the aforementioned "Fast Play" option, but you can't really have it both ways, unfortunately. If you want all that little stuff then the game is naturally going to take longer to get through.
