Re: MLB 11 The Show "Franchise/Season" Progress Thread

In my 3rd year of my Cardinals franchise. First year, i traded colby rasmus for curtis granderson. that was the only big trade. Got to the post-season and lost the division series in 4 games to the phils.
Signed Jose Bautista in the offseason.

Ended up winning the WS in 6 games against the Red sox.

So now in the offseason, i have $45,000 to spend, what do i do?

The All-Star Break has come and gone in my Seattle Mariners franchise. Ike Davis (controlled by me) won the Home Run Derby, while the American League took the All-Star in a pitchers' duel, 2-1. Joe Mauer won the MVP with a double and a 2-run HR.

King Felix earned the start and gave up a solo HR to Brian McCann in his 2 innings of work. David Aardsma also made the AL Squad from my team and pitched a scoreless 7th inning. Mariano Rivera worked the 9th to earn the save, no shock there.

Right before the break, I pulled the trigger on what should be a great move for the future, as I shipped out Eric Bedard to Colorado for Jhoulys Chacin. That gives me a 1-2-3 punch of King Felix, Chacin and Michael Pineda. Vargas and Fister round out the rotation.

I'm still 6.5 games back of Oakland in the AL West and 10 games out of the Wild Card. Chone Figgins, Milton Bradley and Jack Cust can all be had (I've had no offers from the CPU) for a cheap price. I'll be shopping around, looking to see if I can get back some prospects in return for these veteran players. I'd like to really move Bradley so I can call up Peguero and give him a chance.

That's so funny because Oakland is doing terrible in my Mariners franchise. Bedard is also doing great, my best pitcher right now, ERA of like 2.40 and I'm building for a playoff run this year with the additions of Adam Lind and Jason Kubel. Funny how different the game can be for different people.

This World Series is pretty intense. The Rangers are pretty good, for that matter.
Only 1 game out of the six I have played has been a pitchers duel, in that game Texas won 2-0 on a CJ Wilson CG SHO.
Offense has really been a factor, both parks are hitter-friendly and the ball FLIES out of the park. Most of the runs I have scored have been on homers.
Going into Game 7, in Arizona.
Cy Young-er Clay Bucholz (1-1, 3.86 ERA) vs. C.J. Wilson (1-0, 3.05 ERA)
Josh Hamilton- .370 AVG, 4 HRs, 10 RBI in series
Dan Johnson- .454 AVG, 4 HRs, 8 RBI in series
Kemp for NL MVP
Montero for AL ROY

Yeah, Bedard was by far my worst starter (I simmed all of his games, as I only pitch/play games that King Felix and Pineda start), with an ERA around 6.00. I was surprised the Rockies had that much interest in him, especially since Chacin was 9-2 with a 3.10 ERA and has a strong upside, but hey, I wasn't going to argue.

Oakland traded early in the year for Jonathan Sanchez from SF and just pulled off a trade to acquire Jason Werth! Who knew the A's would make those moves? I'm 5.5 games back, so I may just stay with what I have and try and make a run in the last month.

Re: MLB 11 The Show "Franchise/Season" Progress Thread

The Washington Nationals (my team) are the 2011 NL East champions and will face the Wild Card champion, San Francisco Giants in the National League Division Series.

Game 1
All-Star pitching matchup had Tim Lincecum facing off against Stephen Strasburg as the Nationals hosted the Giants. The Nationals got on the board early with a leadoff triple by Danny Espinosa who scored on the wild throw by Aubrey Huff. The Giants tied the game in the top of the 5th inning on a double by Andres Torres and a single by Pablo Sandoval. The game remained tied at 1 until 1-out in the bottom of the 7th inning when Ian Desmond got hold of a 3-2 Lincecum fastball to send it over the left-field wall for a 2-run homerun. Strasburg was lifted in the 9th for Drew Storen who pitched a 1-2-3 9th to pick up his first ever post-season save.

Nationals 3, Giants 1
Nationals lead 1-0

Game 2
John Lannan got the nod against Matt Cain in game 2 of the NLDS. The Nationals were hoping to keep the momentum going against another strong starting pitcher for the Giants. Lannan was a surprise all season, racking up 15 victories and a sub 4.00 ERA. Lannan was opted as the #2 starter so the Nationals wouldn’t throw two hard throwing right-handers, Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman, in back to back games. Cain has filthy stuff striking out the side in the 1st – Cain finished with 11 Ks in 7 innings of work. Lannan matched zeroes with Cain until the top of the 6th inning when he was pulled due to an injury to his pitching arm. The Nats brought in journeyman left-hander Tom Gorzelanny from the pen. Gorzelanny pitched until he was lifted in a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 8th. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 9th when Ryan Zimmerman hit a 3-2 changeup from Giants reliever Santiago Casilla for the walk-off win.

National 1, Giants 0
Nationals lead 2-0

Game 3
The Giants were hosting their first playoff game since last year’s World Series and broke out the orange jerseys, usually reserved for Friday night games. The Giants threw southpaw Madison Bumgarner versus the Nationals Jordan Zimmermann. For the second time in the series, Espinosa led off the game with a triple. Ryan Zimmerman followed the triple with a single to RF and the Nationals took an early 1-0 lead. The Nationals added another run in the 3rd inning on Wilson Ramos pulverizing of a Bumgarner hanging breaking ball. Zimmermann was virtually unhittable through 4 innings allowing only a hard single to CF by Sandoval. Zimmermann let it slip away in the 5th inning by walking the leadoff batter and allowing 4 straight hits, including 2 doubles and the Giants went on top for the first time all series 3-2. The score remained 3-2 into the bottom of the 8th when Sandoval led off the inning with a moon-shot into McCovey Cove and the Giants took a commanding 4-2 lead. Zimmerman was removed after the HR to Sandoval and finished the day 7+ innings, 4 runs, 11 K and 2 BB. Brian Wilson came in for a 1-2-3 9th and the Giants avoided the sweep.

Giants 4, Nationals 2
Nationals lead 2-1

More to follow…

Re: MLB 11 The Show "Franchise/Season" Progress Thread

sooooo The Nats needs a centerfielder and trade for Johny Gomes? sounds like a trade the CPU GMs would make in The Show

As for my Mets, the Fish continue to kick my ***. Once again they beat me 2 of 3. The Only game i won was an insane 10-8 game that i played in Boston. Let me tell you, the wind blowing out in Fenway is no bueno, especially when you have a soft toss matchup like Gee vs Livan.

I have reached the September call ups, since neither of my farm teams made the playoffs. Now my brain will explode with all the options I have off my bench. The Phils and Braves have surprisingly faded down the stretch, so i will have a good chance to get some ABs for my youngins.

Now I am facing the snakebitten Cubbies, and promptly taken the first 2 games. Ike, Bay, Reyes, and Varitek continue to have strong 2nd halves. Ike has really turned it up after napping a couple months.

Upton with a drive...DEEP RIGHT...does it have the distance....YES! THE DIAMONDBACKS HAVE WON THE WORLD SERIES!
Walkoff 2RUN Blast in the bottom of the 10th!

Now that I am in the offseason, letting Nyjer Morgan walk, Clay Bucholz (51.5 mil in 3 years? I'm good), Daniel Bard (20 mil for 3 years for a 27 year old reliever with a 4.9 ERA in the regular season?) and a few others to attempt to sign Jose Bautista, Jeff Francis, and Jose Lopez.

If I do get Bautista I will move Upton to Center, or move him to left and return Stubbs to Center. Then Jose Lopez will go to his original position at Third and Jeff Francis will be a good 4th/5th starter.

Game 4
The Nationals are headed to the National League Champion Series to face the NL West champions, Colorado Rockies, after beating the Giants 5-2 in SF. The Nationals got 6 solid innings from Jason Marquis who allowed 2 runs, 5 hits and 2 walks. The Nationals got on the board in the top of the 2nd inning with a walk to Ian Desmond who advanced to 2nd base on a FC by Mike Morse. Wilson Ramos, who had a great NLDS, came up with a clutch 2-out single to score Desmond. Marquis followed Ramos with a single of his own on a 3-1 fastball from Giants starter Colby Lewis. Danny Espinosa delivered another 2-out single to score Ramos. The Giants tied the game up in the bottom of the 2nd with Freddy Sanchez doubling in two runs. The game remained tied until the 7th when Jayson Werth hammered a hanging slider over the LF wall on a pitch from Santiago Casilla, who had an awful series giving up 3 runs and 2 HR in 1+ inning of work. Drew Storen gave up one hit in the bottom of the 9th in route to his second save of the series. The Nationals are headed to Colorado to face Ubaldo Jimenez in game 1 of the NLCS.

Nationals 5, Giants 2
Nationals win series 3-1

The ALCS features two AL East teams, Boston and Tampa Bay, battling for the American League pennant.

January 3rd, 2011

Chicago, Illinois

After a disappointing showing in the 2010 Winter Meetings, Chicago Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry has found himself being lead to the plank on the verge of the slow walk towards a fall into the ocean of unemployment. Fans of the Cubs both in Chicago and around the nation have bombarded message boards and radio shows, calling for Hendry's dismissal.

The days and weeks leading up to the commencement of December 6th (the beginning of the Winter Meetings) were filled with optimism and speculation as to which prized free-agent the Cubs would go after. Hendry failed to live up to the expectations and was immediately attacked in the media for his relucatance and eventual failure to act on any rumor. Hendry's generally been known as an aggressive GM, going after the likes of Alfonso Soriano and Koskue Fukodome while resigning franchise staples Carlos Zambrano and Aramis Ramirez. Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, a Chicago Cubs fan since 1984, publicly supported Hendry in the days following the Winter Meetings, and up until earlier this morning, Ricketts has stated implicitly that Hendry needn't feel that his job security threatened. But after an appearance on Chicago's ESPN 1000 WMVP-AM, the tone of Rickett's support suddenly has a doubt cast upon it. When responding to a caller's laments about Hendry's lack of action during the previous month, Ricketts responded with, "I'm just as disappointed as you are. Our financial security and reputation as a spending team gave him [Hendry] the means to go out and acquire an impact player. Our [the Cubs] failures last season should have given him the motivation. But he didn't act, and that frustrates us [the Ricketts family] and I'm well-aware of our fans' frustrations." When the host asked Ricketts what his next big move could be, Ricketts responded with a cryptic message, bordering on a riddle, "I tell you what. Our next big move may not impact the lineup, the rotation or the bullpen."

Without resorting to decrypting his statement, one can reasonably assume he was talking about Chicago's front office staff. With pitchers and catchers reporting in less than two months and the Chicago Cubs looking less and less like a contender amidst a flurry of Central teams' moves, and the media zoo that is Chicago, the upcoming weeks will play out with quite a bit of news. Stay tuned.
