That said, you definitely have some control over pitch outcome. How long you hold the button matters. It affects pitch speed, command, and the amount of break on breaking pitches. It just isn't 'push a button and go'...there is far more subtlety in it. In fact, if you simply tap the button, it is an excellent way to get shelled.

When pitching in classic, you have about a 1 second time period before you get the controller vibration (i.e. max-effort). The following are my observations...

Max effort pitches (holding the button down till the vibration) result in the following:
    • More velocity
    • Less control
    • A sharper break on breaking pitches
    • Pitches tend to rise more

Minimum effort pitches (tapping the button) results in the following:
    • Less velocity
    • Better control
    • "Loopier" breaking balls (especially curves/sliders)
    • Pitches sink more (due to lower velo) - changeups will pretty constantly wind up in the dirt

In many cases, an "intermediate" duration is optimal. However, you can vary this from pitch to pitch (i.e. like a pitcher adding/subtracting from the speed of the pitch). This is a tremendous way to keep hitters off-balance to help to avoid them getting solid contact/timing.

This is just a basic overview...I'm sure there are more subtleties involved.
Finally...thank you josh! i struggled with this notion so bad man, only thing i'm not understanding now is the yellow markers, i enjoy my catcher calling the game so i use api on, the only time i really wont listen to him if i see something in the a.i that seems off, or calls something extreme. the thing i cant seem to get right is the yellow markers coming off of the ball, am i suppose to point the arrows at the center of the glove or the actually ball? i use Armors clean screen, but i do not know how they are able to pitch and know the breaks of each pitcher in this game and to know how it pitch will break, but at any rate any advice on this would be very helpful?

It will...just remember that with directional hitting, ratings-impacts are much more pronounced. You can time a pitch perfectly and still foul it back (or flat-out miss it). It is rewarding and frustrating at the same time. Just really ride things out with it, you will go through hot streaks and cold streaks just like real-life.

I've been meaning to throw something like this out there for a while, just never had the time until today Again, these are my observations; I'm pretty sure I am correct, but I certainly wouldn't mind confirmation from others....especially Armor when he gets back.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that the marker signifies the final location of the pitch (following the break). I use API at default, so I can tap R2 before pitch selection and see the final location the catcher wants it. Pretty sure the glove indicator is that final location (not where to aim the pitch).

ok so my assumption is if he calls for a slider and it has three yellow arrows (indicating) a hard sharp break, where to point the tip of the last arrow, to the glove indicator where the glove last pops up with (r2 button) ?

            Re: Armor & Sword & Marino's MLB The Show 17 Timed/Classic Simulation All-Star Slider

So I have played 15-20 random games with this set, and I have hit a fork in the road. I haven't tried any changes yet, but I am considering either going to Hall of Fame or turning pitch confidence off. I've noticed that it can be far too easy to max out your pitcher's confidence and go on a roll. I usually give up my runs early but shut the CPU down in the middle-late innings.

There is a chance I'm looking too much into pitcher confidence and should just move up to HoF. I'm also not striking out at a high enough rate and occasionally pitching too well with below average pitchers.

Basically, has anyone looked deep into pitcher confidence before I dive down the rabbit hole?

Yes I'm sure this is right this is how I've used it for the last 2 years on the game since using Armors sliders. Of course the pitch doesn't always end up where you aim the arrows but that's the idea of the arrows to show the break of the pitches.

So you should aim the end of the arrows at the glove or near there because sometimes I slightly disagree with where the Cather is asking for it e.g. A changeup where the API (glove symbol) is near the middle of the plate I usually aim the end of the arrows lower as I don't want to hang it over the heart of the plate. Hope that makes sense lol

Anyone else having an insane amount of injuries? Pretty much every game a pitcher leaves with an injury...

I am thinking of turning the injury slider down...

Thanks Armor and Josh for explaining different pitch set ups...I'm a noob when it comes to baseball I understand somethings but not everything. ..

The show was too good for me to pass up so I bought it and love it....Could e at some point get a tutorial video on pitching from either Armor or Josh that would be fantastic if not thanks anyway!!!

Great sliders Armor by the way!!!

I never thought about pitcher confidence. I have put cpu contact up to 6 like armor had it last year and I have seen some more offense from the cpu

How many games have you played.

Because I have not seen that at all in over 50 franchise games. Injuries at 8 for played games is the sweet spot.

It’s not a slider issue. Either they are going to patch it....or we live with it sometimes. And that means to also be careful on what pitches you choose with men on base. Before this season is was automatic that the catcher would pounce on everything and IMO that was worse. I mean they would pop and get every foul pop, bunt pop ups, foul pop ups, passed balls. It sucked. Sucked bad.

I have to say.....most of the balls in the dirt that get away from the catcher are fairly decent in how far away the catcher is, they have to pop up, run and retrieve and throw it. Sometimes I am seeing some wankery with slow runners taking bases. But most of the time....it’s on me throwing that bad pitch into dirt. And It is a deserved passed ball or wild pitch.

I rather we have this then what we have had since I started playing this game.

Be careful what you wish for.

FWIW, I agree with this even though I use different settings, and I take the same type of approach. I'm finding myself thinking twice about burying a curve or slider and instead leaving it closer to (but not necessarily in) the strike zone. Sometimes I get burned, but it's better than giving up a bunch of free bases.

Either that, or I'm using less effort with runners on (which is a mechanic in Classic pitching too)

It does need to be tweaked, I think. But I agree that I don't want to go back to last year's approach to this.
