Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)

    Danny Carmichael Introductory Press Conference

AD Mark Roth: This is a great day for Gonzaga Basketball. We believe we have found a coach that can take us to the next level among the basketball elites. Here are some accomplishments that Danny Carmichael has achieved at Radford University. A 98-33 record in 4 years, which averages out to a 24.5-8 record per year. He coached Radford to their first 30 win season in school history, first 2nd round appearance, first Sweet 16 appearance, and first Elite 8 appearance in school history. He also got Radford their first top 100 recruiting class in program history and their first top 25 recruiting class in program history. With that being said, please help me in welcoming our new men's basketball coach, Danny Carmichael.

Danny Carmichael: First off I'd like to thank AD Mark Roth and everyone who helped make this happen. I'd also like to thank everyone at Radford and my former players. The last 4 years have been some of the best years of my life and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to have been your head coach.

When asked, "what would it take to get you to leave Radford?" I responded by saying, "a truly special job". Well, this is a special job... An elite job. When you think of Mid-Major basketball programs, Gonzaga is the first team that comes to mind.

I feel that if you coach at "Small Conference" programs, you hit a peak and sadly, I feel like I may have hit that peak this past season at Radford. At Gonzaga, there is no peak. I think we can... Actually, I know that we will compete for Championships. Not only in the West Coast Conference, but on a National scale as well. In my first press conference at Radford I promised the fans that I would do everything in my power to win and compete for championships... Well, I'm going to make that same promise to you right now. We will win Conference Championships here and we will compete on a National level... The NIT isn't an option anymore. The NCAA Tournament is where I expect us to be every year.

Recruiting wise, I don't mean to sound prideful, but I do believe my track record speaks for itself. At Radford my lowest rated recruiting class was ranked #52 in the country and we even got a Top 25 class which is un heard of for Small Conference schools. I intend to do the same here. I'm going to be the hardest working recruiter in the country because if you want to win, you have to recruit.

We will play an exciting brand of basketball. We will play "Mayhem" defense. By "Mayhem" I mean we will be relentless on the defensive side of the ball. We will press and trap the opposing team all 94 feet, hoping to create turnovers which turn into fast break points. On offense, we will run a motion offense with lots of ball screens trying to get any open shot we can get.

Lastly, I would just like to say once more how honored and privileged I am to have this amazing opportunity to be your Men's Basketball Coach. Thank you.

Obviously the WCC will be a little tougher then the Big South, but because of you recruiting abilities, you will soon fine that you probably won't get challenged much conference wise, so like Gonzaga in real life I hope to see you challenge yourself with alot of tough non-conference matchup's. However also in case you don't know this, most won't come to Spokane to play in the Kennell, so Gonzaga ends up having to win all those games on the road.

Also another key rivalry matchup is playing Washington and WSU so don't forget to put them on your non-conferece schedule. Typically UW hasn't been willing to come to Spokane in the past and the Zags end up having to play every year in Seattle, but I believe recently they did finally agree to a home/away setup, just like WSU has.
Not gonna lie, I surprised myself a bit too ... But, I said this as nicely as possible in the "introductory press conference". I hit a peak at Radford which I wasn't going to top. Radford is in a very small conference which is why I was never able to get that #1 Mid-Major Poll rating and honestly, Big South conference play was straight up boring. I believe this past year I was rated about 10 overall points higher than any other team in that conference. Then, I took a look at the Freshmen that my Conference opponents were bringing in... The majority of the Freshmen's overall were in the 40's and 50's... And compared to what I was getting at Radford, if I stayed their too much longer there would be absolutely no competition.

At Gonzaga, I believe I can win National Championships. That is a another reason why I left.

The farthest west I've lived is Michigan... So, I'm not too familiar with any West Coast teams lol. This REALLY helped and I will make sure to put Washington or WSU on the schedule! Thanks again for the info!

Also just a little fun fact. I was intrigued by Gonzaga because Tennessee and Gonzaga have agreed to play each other either this year or next year... I forget which it was. :P

Yeah Gonzaga has played Tennessee in the past back in 07 when the Vols where #11, and they played it in Seattle. Every year Gonzaga plays a game in Seattle called the Battle in Seattle, typcially against a Top-25 ranked opponent bascially because Seattle has a huge amount of alumni living there.

Other non-conference opponents to keep on the schedule is EWU (Big Sky) their campus is just 20 minutes away, Idaho (WAC) they are 1 hour south of Spokane and Boise State (current coach Leon Rice is a former Gonzaga assistant).

Congrats on the tournament run as well as the Gonzaga job. Definitely a big jump so hopefully the WCC will provide some competition for you, I know like you said after you get good at a small conference school the conference games are too easy.

Good luck with the Zags, looking forward to seeing what schedule you come up with.

It sucks you had that save issue. That is why I always try to have backups on file for the last few games, but at least you had one for the season. I might also suggest an off-console save (on a flash drive or whatever) as I nearly lost my legacy a few years ago when my console crashed.

Good luck at Gonzaga, though! You should be able to compete for national titles there.

I actually have my current legacy saved on my my console, a flash drive and the cloud. I have learned from past mistakes/issues

Thanks! The RPI rank of the Big South was 27 while the RPI rank for the WCC was 8. So, I'm definitely looking forward to the challenge!

Thanks! This season may be a bit rough (you'll see why in my next few updates), but in a few season I expect Gonzaga will be back to it's dominant self.

Thanks! I'm trying to go to schools other current posters on this board haven't gone to yet (well, since I've been posting frequently). I had an offer from San Diego State, which I turned down since that's where your coach currently is :P.

Yeah, I will definitely look into that! What I hate is I saved my back up file after every game for the first 3 years of the legacy. Then I had this "I don't think anything like this will happen" so I slacked off on backing up my legacy... Bad move on my part lol.

                        2011 Recruiting Class

Most of the time when a new coach is hired they have to scramble to sign an entire recruiting class or finish a recruiting class... This was one of those rare occurrences where this was not the case.

Gonzaga had 4 scholarships open and they had 4 signees by the time Coach Danny Carmichael arrived. So, Coach Carmichael's focus can now turn to the 2012 Recruiting Class.

This Gonzaga class ranks #42 in the nation with 4 3* signees, 3 of which are Junior College transfers.

Looks like Coach Few took instate recruiting to a whole new level.

Roster looks pretty deep at the guard position I would assume you are going to go after some "Big's" to improve that front court, with the 2 scholarships available this year. Nice thing is you have alot of JR's, so really looking forward to seeing what you do in 2013.

November 8, 2011: #19 Washington State vs. Gonzaga

Danny Carmichael's debut with Gonzaga didn't go exactly as planned..

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and kept it through most of the game. Going into halftime Gonzaga held a 48-47 lead, which definitely made an upset seem possible. But, with 2:02 left in the game, Washington State SG Harry Grundy (playing PG), made a 3-pointer which gave the Cougars the lead and they never looked back winning a hard fought game at Gonzaga.

Leading the way for Gonzaga was undersized Senior SG Chester French. At the beginning of the year, French was a PG, but made the switch to SG for lack up depth and the fact that Gonzaga's best two players (French and Spaulding) were both PG's. French scored a game high 28 points on 10/22 shooting, 3/12 from the 3 point arc, and 5/8 from the Free Throw line. French also tallied 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Junior PG Wade Spaulding had a fantastic game as well as he scored 17 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists. Not bad for a 5'7" Point Guard. Besides those two, no Gonzaga player scored more than 10 points. Sophomore C Chester Reaves came close in his first game with the Bulldogs, as he put up 8 points on 3/4 shooting and 2/2 from the free throw line. Reaves also grabbed 5 boards. However turnovers and fouls killed Gonzaga the entire game, which is what ultimately led to the loss.

Washington State had a rather balanced, yet un-common attack. The Cougars started 3 Shooting Guards and 2 Power Forwards. Both Power Forwards are undersized at 6'6" and 6'7" respectively. Senior SG Harry Grundy led the way for the Cougars as he scored a team high 18 points, and also tallied 5 rebounds and 4 assists. He was a perfect 3/3 from 3 point range. Both Power Forwards had great games for the Cougars as Gonzaga really lacks a good inside presence. Senior PF Manuel Akingbala (6'6") scored 15 points and grabbed 7 boards, while Senior PF Woody Faulkner (6'7") scored 14 points and grabbed 8 boards. Junior SG Bryan Rollins chipped in 14 points and was 3/4 from 3 point range, while Freshman SF Richie Lang shot a perfect 5/5 and scored 11 points in just 9 minutes of playing time.
