Agreed, before injuries and other things started happening to RGIII he was the talk of the league. People were saying he was next step up in the evolutionary chain of Cunningham and Vick.

If only his ankle/legs held up we'd be talking about a true superstar. His somewhat reckless play doomed him but it was exacerbated by the bumbling of Snyder and Shanahan especially.

And this is why Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy will, and should, sit firmly on the bench. It doesn't matter how hard they try, they can never reach those highs. We've seen Griffin do it.

But it was two years ago. We've seen other rookies shine and then fall off afterwards. You guys are saying before injury as he's just gotten injured for the third time in the third season. He is what he is at this point.

Oh for sure. But what he is right now is still a better option than the two dudes backing him up.

I certainly agree he's in dire need of a scenery change. After his rookie year, he was expected to be one of the greats, and I think the weight of those expectations still hold him back.

But I'm not as certain he'll be above average elsewhere. He deserves a chance, but not to be handed a starting gig.

He hasn't been good or healthy in 2 years. For as great as his OROY year was, the last two have been equally as frustrating. Not all his fault (injury, coaches, owners), but also not an excuse. Other players don't get to have one great year followed by two bad, injury riddled seasons and get a pass. Some do.

This season will be telling, especially with the 5th year option looming.

Is he really though even if the numbers(regular season)suggest otherwise?

At this point, there's no reason why it shouldn't be an open competition because based on what we've seen throughout camp and games, can you really say he's been that much better them to keep the job?

2012 was so long ago and eventually using that card(speaking in general, not saying you're using it)won't work at all.

Highly drafted QBs do. Sam Bradford is about to get an extension. How many chances did Alex Smith get? Alex Smith still isn't any good and no one is threatening his job.

Isn't it an open competition right now? Jay Gruden is openly hostile to Griffin in the media and he still starts him. That, to me, says he knows that's his best chance. He'd love nothing more than to bench Griffin.

Am I the only one that saw Cousins and McCoy stink it up last year? Or any other time they stepped on the field? What am I missing about those two?

Definitely has to do with the investment (mainly picks) they put in him. But those guys you listed all were given up on by their original team eventually... the direction I think RG3 is headed. I'm sure someone will throw money at RG3 like the Eagles want to do for Bradford. One team's trash is another team's treasure.

I wouldn't say Smith kept getting chances. The 49ers were a complete clusterF until Harbaugh got there. He was benched multiple times for the likes of Tim Rattay and Shaun Hill and Troy Smith, only to have a good year when paired with a good coach.

Now that I think about it, RG3 is like both those players downfalls rolled in to one: career sabotage by coaching/ownership and injury. RG3 has shown more in his lone good season then those guys did combined, though. So I'm sure his leash still has plenty of slack.

For what it's worth, I would've taken RG3 on the Bills this offseason. Not for anything more then a 2nd round pick, though.

Not that it means much...but 12 Pro-Bowlers in the first 16 picks. With 2 above average players in Fairley and Solder along with 2 busts in Ponder and Gabbert. And 14 total in the first round. Also Pryor in the '11 Supplemental draft. And Chris Harris was undrafted FA.

No, it's not an open competition or Griffin wouldn't have started both games. We saw the backups stink it up but we also saw RGIII miss, literally, high school level reads. Nothing he's done in the past 2 years should suggest that's he's above anyone on the depth chart.

You got 3 options right there in front of you and another one at the sticks, yet he chose to run and proceed to turn the ball over.

Stick throw was covered as the defense was in cover 4. Yes the check down is the play. But after three awful series I think he was pressing to make something out of the drive. Aka trying to back up his words.

Not defending him, but it is funny the only time he had a chance to scan the field was when Detroit dropped 8 deep.

He can't throw him open like other good QBs can do?
