Zibanejad certainly has a high upside. He needs to get more consistent. Also he is one of the few forwards playing very high minutes today. I have the feeling many more forwards had 22-25 minutes in the eighties playing both pp and pk.

Re: The Official 2020-2021 Season Talk Thread
It definitely helps, but lets not act like his PPG average hasn't been going up every single season of his career. His averages the prior 2 seasons had him just over a goal every other game and an assist per game.
Basically averaging a 120+ point pace per 82 games the prior 2 years.
But I also want to credit the next best player in the league, Draisaitl. Insane how these two push and develop eachother. Draisaitl is so intelligent, reads the play and sees the ice so well. McDavid is insanely skilled and with his skating it is like he is everywhere on the ice at once. I could see McDavids average go down a little with age or injuries just like Erik Karlsson just due to so much of their play is based on pure physical skating skill though while a guy like Draisaitl is just so smart it's like he just positions himself at the right places on the ice all the time. However McDavid might develop that too while his speed drops and he needs more of other skills...
Anyway. Pretty cool to see two guys at this level. Cool to see a coach willing to give them the ice time they have (unlikely in this era to have forwards averaging 22-25 minutes). Imagine them also playing box play like Gretzky and Lemieux did in their primes. Now go play NHL Two K!

Re: The Official 2020-2021 Season Talk Thread
If this was any other sport, it would be THE topic of the season.
Refs during a Wings/Preds game who had a mic on him got caught admitting he called a nothing penalty on the Preds just to give them one early on in the game (presumably to set the tone in the game).
We know how much fans talk about refs deciding games, ESPECIALLY in NBA, do we need more proof that refs actually do this and these leagues are a joke?
Edit-NHL announced he's never reffing again....although he was gonna retire in 3 months anyways so....
He's the Tim Donaghy of the NHL. League will act like he acted alone and nobody else ever does this type of stuff.
If I'm an exec in hockey, I'm going straight to the league and inquiring about this. Especially teams who've been at the forefront of some very bad calls throughout the season (aka many North division teams)Last edited by Majingir; 03-24-2021, 08:50 AM.Comment

Obviously this is a bad look for the league. Many people - some on this very forum - have commented for a long time on the borderline illegitimacy of the refereeing in the game, and this is pretty good evidence that that assessment is correct. Anytime you have an incident that threatens the legitimacy of your sport, it's potentially incredibly damaging.
Of course, the NBA just swept it all under the rug and tagged Donaghy with the "bad apple" label and pretended like none of it ever happened. Below a certain age, I'm sure no one remembers that incident. I don't envision this situation being any different.Comment

Re: The Official 2020-2021 Season Talk Thread
The media seems to be almost defending Peel. Being like "it happens all over sports, his issue wasn't that he did it, it's that he got caught doing it", which is sadly probably true.
Will reffing change because of this? No way.
But why does it have to happen to begin with? In NHL and NBA especially. The "make up call". The fact that a team who just had back to back PPs can predict they're probably getting called for a penalty next is an issue.
Last I checked, they aren't in the Sports Entertainments business.Comment

Hearing what we heard isn't a surprise to anyone. Rather than talk about how their going to change officiating they just wipe their hands clean and say he's the problem.
It won't change anything going forward.
(Probably helped that he was just a few weeks away from retirement)
And no, this is not at all comparable to Donaghy, that doesn't even make any sense as a comparison.Comment

Re: The Official 2020-2021 Season Talk Thread
Yesterday, Canucks got called for too many men on the ice so they said F it and played with 6 guys on the ice during the delayed penalty.
Senators just had 6 players on the ice for good 15 seconds but they didn't get called for a penaltyLast edited by Kobalt; 03-25-2021, 06:41 PM.Comment

Re: The Official 2020-2021 Season Talk Thread
Leafs with 12 shots in the period, but down 1-0....Guess the last week Leafs are back.
Are they protesting the Tim Peel incident or something?20210325_193708.jpeg
Edit- They actually are! Simmonds got tripped, got mad at the no call, during the break he went to talk to the ref, and the ref COVERED HIS MIC!Last edited by Majingir; 03-25-2021, 08:21 PM.Comment

Re: The Official 2020-2021 Season Talk Thread
Funny stats from tonight.
Rangers last 2 games vs the Flyers they've outscored them 17-3! Zibanejad has 6 goals and 6 assists in those 2 games, BOTH games he had a natural hat trick!
Sabres have been shut out more times than they have wins.Comment
