That was probably because I was playing bad and it was 95 degrees.

Hey Matt10, have you ever played Colbert Hills? Its pretty tough. Let me know what other courses you've played that are in Kansas. I try to play Sand Creek Station in Newton at least once a month, its a great course, but challenging nonetheless.

Is the first hole at Seneca a par 4 that goes down hill quite a bit? I think i remember playing there about 15 years ago.

I've never played colbert hills - you must be more south. I'm more near MO than anything, but play primarily local courses - such as OP Golf Course...Tomahawk Ridge - Heritage - Deer Creek, etc

My home course is OP Golf Course - but play St. Andrews a lot as well.

Yeah, it is a little bit of a dogleg right. It is definitely downhill on your second shot to the green.

                    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

I've really gotten into golfing this year. I always enjoyed it, but was never any good. Atleast, not even remotely good enough to keep score.

I started going out with my buddies just for fun, and decided to read up a little bit on how to fix my swing, how to stand, what to focus on, etc. I went to the range and was actually striking the ball pretty well. Last week I went to Dicks, and picked up a new set of Walter Hagen clubs for $180 (usually $400), which I love.

Actually kept score for the first time yesterday (at Pine Hill in Maine), and shot much better than I thought I would. It was really only my second time out in about 2 years, and while I did have my shanks and putting difficulties, I still managed to score a 96, which i'm happy about. Shot a 45 on the front nine. I scored par on 4 holes, which is three more than I had ever had before. I've just gotta work on nixing "those holes" where I score a 7 or 8.

Best hole was a 520 yard par 5. Perfect tee shot, probably 250 dead center. Followed it up with a great 3 wood on the left side of the fairway. Pitched the ball up to the green, probably 10 yards from the hole. I rimmed out the birdie putt, but wound up tapping in for par. I was excited, because for me to have a legit birdie opportunity on a long par 5, i've gotta be doing something right.

Can't wait to get out again. Went out yesterday and picked up a Nike Dri-Fit polo, as I was sweating my boys off yesterday. I blame my 51 on the back 9 on perspiration

Alright, so I just finished up. My course is a 9-hole, but you can do 18... I did not.

I shot a 61, 19 putts. Best hole was a 5 on the par 3 3rd hole, which I started with a great 3 iron to close to the green, chipped on, and promptly three putted.

I had some great shots, but I still have a tendency to hit the ball on the toe of the club, causing mi****s.

Had a good time, though, which is all it's about. I was pretty damn pumped about that 5... especially having the shot at that par.

                        Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Shot (-3) early this morning on the local course (par 70). Putted well for once, and my swing is once again automatic. Mental game was strong - with one hiccup when I missed an eagle putt.

For those just starting out, my recommendation is to 1. get clubs fitted, 2. find out your yardages - go get a skycaddie (the first one is under $200 now) or some kind of way to measure your distance.

I used to think my drive went only 240 yards total, before I got my sky caddie. I naturally underestimate my distance because I don't want to be those guys who says they can drive the ball 300 plus yards.

After getting a sky caddie, I found out my average drive was actually about 270 yards - total. Not bad for a 5'8 (short) guy. Longest drive this morning was on a driveable 325 yard par 4 - i ended up on the left fringe, pin high

                          Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Today really summed up my golf game in general.

                          I golfed 18 holes...

Front nine...8-over 44. This is very good for me. Kept the ball in play, good chips, no bad putts. I shanked a few tee shots and still managed to save the holes. For me, this was an excellent nine holes.

Back nine...17-over 53. Utter frustration. Shanked shots, lost balls, bad chips. Nothing went right. I wanted to throw my clubs in the pond.

                          I suck at consistency

Do you guys follow a routine when you play? In other words, do you do the same thing before every shot no matter what? I do myself, as I feel it keeps me from getting out of sync for the most part.

Before any shot, outside of putting I go thru the routine of:

                            * standing behind the ball facing my desire target and visualize the shot

                            * take club and point to my target while getting my grip

                            * walk up to the ball, lineup my stance, and take two practice swings

                            * approach ball, get my position, and think "head down, smooth swing" and then begin my shot

On putts after reading the putt:

                            * stand behind ball and visualize putt

                            * take practice swing to get feel for how far back to take putter

                            * walk up to the ball, line myself up and take 2 practice swings

                            * approach ball and tell myself "head down, nice smooth stroke" and then putt

Been doing this same routine for the 15+ years I'be been playing. Its not perfect, but it works...errr....most of the time...
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Sounds good there, CB - if it's not broke, don't fix it, right?

For me, it's quick - takes about 20 secs total.

                              Full Shots

                              - step behind the ball, seek out target

                              - once target is found...breathe in (stomach out), and breathe out (stomach in, crunch) - the goal here is to only remember what my smooth breathing sounds like...

                              - 1 half practice swing, never full, i just want to feel the weight of the club

                              - set up to the ball, look at target, breathe in/out again - remembering that is all i want to "hear" in my head when i swing

                              - begin shot

                              Putting

                              - stand behind the ball, breathe in/out same as full shot

                              - move one step to the left, then to the right, so i can find the direction of the putt

                              - find my apex/intermediate point - breathe in/out

                              - step up to the ball, putt (no practice swing) I believe practice swings do well to gauge for the full swing, but for putting it's all distance control - i dont want to waste a good putt swing with a practice one.

My routine is pretty basic, but has changed recently. I don't like taking a lot if time.
On full ****s I stand behind the ball & visualize the shot. Then address the ball & set my grip. (I recently changed grips so this is not automatic yet). Then I take 1 half swing to get a feel of my shot shape & weight of the club. Then I give a little forwArd press with the hands & and think about a long, athletic swing. I'm a short guy so I try to remember to make a long swing so I can maximize my distance. Shot a 78 on Sunday. It was freaking HOT!
