    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Today's round was a little more balanced, with a 3 putt on a par 3 for an unwanted bogie. Posted an 81 on the same course I played yesterday. I'm playing the East course again tomorrow at my Country Club. Most members prefer the West, but I love the East.

Also, tomorrow's round will be my 70th for the season.

43 years old and I golf everyday. Not bad for a cripple. The pain and muscle spasms are worth it.

PS: I've been meaning to get around to my St. Andrews story and post the pictures. I'll try and post that sometime this week. I've been quite busy these past few weeks!

Round 70 saw me post an 86. I played horrible. I like that a horrible round for me is in the high 80's. It's really not the score, it's the ball striking. I was not happy with it today at all.

I know TaylorMade is being sold, I wonder if Addidas will be reducing their involvement in golf and if Under Armour will fill the void.

Not that it will affect us or have any real world complications but this will bring some weird complications with some of their endorsements.

When/if we see Tiger again will it be in Srixon stuff? What will Rory do? I find it hard to believe that Nike and another company would split endorsements to have these players wear Nike stuff but play with other equipment.

I'm pretty sure Rory used to play Titleist equipment, so that should be an easy transition. Tiger used to play with a Scotty Cameron putter if I recall, so it wasn't all that weird to have non-Nike clubs but be their #1 guy.

Nike never had any reason to be in the equipment business in retrospect. Their clubs always struck me as really expensive, and given that no one had any track record with them, it seemed unwarranted for them to be premium-priced along with brands that golfers have long experience with like Ping, TaylorMade, Titleist, Callaway, etc. Not saying they should have been a discount brand, but when no one knows anything about your equipment, are you really going to take a chance with a $1500 purchase or are you going to go with what you know/trust?

A friend made this comment to me once on the course, and it totally struck me as (mostly) true: Not only has he never used Nike equipment, he's never even played with anyone that used Nike equipment. I've seen people hit the Nike drivers on occasion, but I've never played with anyone who had an entire set of Nike irons/clubs.

I read an article this week about Rory wanting to go back to a Scotty. Don't think that will be an issue now.

Yea I guess I was thinking more along the line of Nike wanting to keep them wearing their attire which might make it awkward when Calloway reaches out to Tiger to use their equipment. I can't really see Callaway saying yea we'll pay you to use our equipment but you can continue to wear Nike.

Again though, really small apples to me. I just get a kick out of "Beef" wearing Arby's on his shirt and turning down PETA asking him to change his nickname to tofu.

Well adidas owns TaylorMade..so yeah they are.

I can't see UA trying to jump in since the big boys are clearly indicating that equipment is a losing business for them.

I know what you mean, but if Nike doesn't make golf equipment any more, it's probably less of an issue. I mean, Spieth is Under Armour's #1 guy and his equipment manufacturer is obviously someone different.

I laughed my a*$ off at Beef's "Arby's" sponsorship. I mean, I don't think I've ever seen a pro golfer with a fast-food joint's logo on their shirt. And it was so prominent, too - it almost looked like he was joking around until I saw it on the 2nd day as well. That guy is a riot.

Yeah, if anything equipment manufacturers are looking to get out of the business, no one is likely to move in at this point. I mean, the financial model was always unsustainable to build your business around selling $400+ drivers and $1500+ sets of irons to golfers year after year and expect people would upgrade their equipment any more often than maybe once every 4-5 years. Once the exponential growth phase of the game leveled off, everyone was left trying to sell the same sh*t to the same group of golfers that already bought that stuff 3 years ago. It's not like iron or driver technology changes that much from year to year.

                            Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

I'm not at all surprised by Nike dropping out.

I've been hearing murmurs on GolfWRX for months now regarding this. I used to play all Nike clubs a few years ago before switching to Titleist gear a couple years back. Nike makes IMO really great golf clubs but the issue I found was Nike was never able to erase that "they make garbage golf clubs" stigma. It also doesn't help that Callaway and Taylormade have such a stranglehold over the game improvement sector of the golf equipment market.

Like others have mentioned it'll be interesting to see where their staffers go. I wonder if Charl Schwartzel made the rare mid season equipment change from Nike to PXG due to him knowing about Nike leaving the golf club business? As for guys like Rory and Tiger I can see Rory going to back to Titleist but I think Tiger will continue to play Nike clubs IF and only IF The Oven (Nike Golf's main club HQ) stays open. Tigers golf clubs are so heavily modified to his looks and his specific club specs (see his one off 420CC driver for example) that I don't seem him switching. Not at this point in his career.

Maybe if the Oven stays open they'll give their staffers two options? Stay with Nike clubs or let them choose another manufacturer without any issues regarding their contracts?

EDIT: So Tiger will be switching clubs when he does in fact return to play.

I'm surprised, but not really surprised at the Nike news. Up until this season, I've always hit a Nike driver. I love the old Str8fit SQ one I had, I have the VRS Cover 2, and it was... just ok. Never really loved it though. The reaction I got from, basically everyone that I was carrying a Nike driver was always... "Why? I've always heard their stuff wasn't great" or "Why? That's strange, I've never seen anyone with Nike stuff or never heard anything good about Nike stuff"

That being said, this year I switched to a Taylormade driver, and those comments have stopped. Now it's "Wow, that's a sweet club eh?" lol Like... Yeah.. I guess? Perception is reality for many. So yeah, like someone else said, they always seemed to be fighting an uphill battle with their image. For me, it was a performance issue as to why I switched from the Nike driver, but I thought it was an interesting point nonetheless.

The news of Adidas trying to sell off Taylormade bothers me a bit. I LOVE their stuff.
