Great decision because everything I tried made a huge, huge difference. Irons were carrying a good 25-30 yards further with anything I tried over my beginner set. The fitter also made an adjustment to the lie as well. Nothing too crazy.

Bad decision because I'm pretty much replacing the entire set. Good lord...so expensive. My OCD kicked in and in the interest of not having mixed up brands, ended up getting all Nike (mostly). Here's what I'm ending up with:

Nike Covert Driver (purchased a few days ago but the fitter helped me with customizing the settings even further)
    Nike Covert 5 Wood
    Nike Covert Irons (5-AW)
    Nike VR Forged Wedges (52, 56, 60)

Now the only thing that I haven't made a decision yet is the hybrid. I actually was hitting the Ping G25 3H very well, but the Nike Covert 4H was giving me problems. They didn't have the Covert in a 3H, so they're going to see if they can get one in for me to test out again. And the Covert Irons...wow. Tried out 4 or 5 different irons, and I was absolutely killing with the Coverts. Hitting right smack in the center of the club face every single time. I didn't realize it would make such a huge difference. Apparently my beginner set was much heavier, and was causing inconsistency. Can't wait until these Coverts come in.

All in all, I'm really glad I went to get fitted. Glad you guys gave me the feedback that it would be a good idea. I was actually feeling really good, because the fitter kept telling people that walked by, "come here, look at this swing. This guy has only been playing for 3 months!" Made me feel really good about all the work and practice that I've been putting in.
Good to hear man! Getting fit definitely helps and WILL improve your game. I'm mostly Nike as well, my bag is below:

Nike VR_S Covert Tour Driver set to 10.5 degrees/closed
Nike VR_S Covert Reg 3 Wood 15 degrees
Nike VR Str8-Fit 5 Wood, 19 degrees closed
    Taylormade 2009 Hybrid 22 degrees
Nike VR Pro II Blades 4-PW, S300 shafts
Callaway X Series Jaws Wedges 56* and 60*
Dynatour Blade Putter (an old putter that I recently switched to after having putting issues, haven't looked back since)

    ------------

On a different note, went out and played quick 9 holes at a local par 31 course (mix of par 3's and 4's). Shot my best round ever there, ended up shooting a +1 32. I was killing it with my irons, made a few adjustments to my setup and was taking nice long divots well after striking the ball. Plus my putter was on fire. Made a few putts from long range.

Friend is taking me out for a round of golf to celebrate my birthday on Saturday, hopefully how I played today is how I'll play Saturday!

Yeah man I felt the improvement immediately. It felt ridiculously easy to get good contact with my irons. Just so much smoother and less effort for the ball to go way further. I cannot wait for those things to come in

I remember for the hell of it I tried out a Ping G20 7 iron. I hit the thing 190 yards lmao. Now it is a simulator but it just goes to show you what proper irons will do for your game.

The great thing is that I got to do the fitting with a Trackman monitor outside on a driving range. So I got the numbers while getting to see actual ball flight. It was fantastic.

In total, roughly $1400 or so. I could've just gotten the custom fitted irons and ordered everything else off eBay, but I really didn't wanna run the risk of possibly getting a fake or anything like that. So obviously more expensive but I've got a lot more peace of mind in the clubs I've got.

Just got back from the Calcutta auction for the member/guest at my club tomorrow. First time I've played in this. One team went for $725 and there is over $6,000 in the pot for the two day event. Gonna be a crazy weekend. Those 3 footers are going to be knee knockers coming down the stretch if we're in contention. 2 person best ball format.

                Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Played a great round yesterday. Went on strong on the front 9 with a 45, but it fell apart on the back 9 a bit. Shot a 54 on the back for a 99. My putting is really tuned in right now. Not that I am sinking long putts, but my stroke is feeling great, and I am reading the greens a lot. Many of my longer putts are literally just burning edges. The confidence has me feeling like I can hole out any putts.

To test this my playing partner and I went to a practice green and just had an impromptu putting contests. Highlight was sinking a 60 yarder, up then down hill with left to right break. Probably won't be playing for another week or 2 after that though.

                  Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Hey guys, I am beginning to pick up golf for the first time (after playing golf video games for many years). I have taken a lesson to get a better understanding for how to swing (and will probably take more lessons the more I get into playing). Most of my time has been spent on the driving range with an iron (that I received from my golf lesson) just getting a feel for swinging a club. I am looking to invest in a set of starter clubs (I'm assuming that's the way to go). Do you guys have any advice on how to purchase your first set? Should I only purchase from a local shop or are there decent online retailers that I should explore? Should I go for the entire set or purchase individually? Any advice for a beginner would be definitely appreciated.

Bought two custom putter covers from Custom Shop 911. One for me and one for my friend. He is still in the navy and last year made chief (E-7) so I thought he would like it.

Playing 18 next Saturday at the local course. I'm excited to see how my game will translate to a full round, as I typically start out rather poorly, but by the end of the last few 9 hole rounds we've played, i've hit my stride.

Get yourself a set of ping G5's off of craigslist. They are an o9lder set, but they are a great set to learn the game with. Ping clubs retain their value so you should be able to pick up a used set in the $150 range and sell them in a few years for still around $100. That would be my best advice to someone just picking up the game to get started at a decent price.

Well, finally got back in my groove after a frustrating couple weeks. Still my putting could have been a lot better but I feel the changes I've been making in that area are starting to pay off and it won't be long before I start reaping the full benefits of my work.

Also, I found this new app called Golfshot. Some of you may already know about it, but this thing is fantastic for tracking stats, such as GIR and FIR percentages, Scrambling stats etc. It also generates a scorecard for you after the round.

Again still not happy with 33 putts. This round easily could have been 65-66. I was burning edges all day. But, with a putter change and other changes being made with my putting stroke, I'm still getting comfortable with new technique and can't expect to perfect it right away.

Nice round there! Any tips for getting more GIR's?! That's the one thing that's holding me back from breaking 80. I only hit around 40% of the greens in a round. It's either the non-exisitent GIR's or my horrid short game. Only thing that's decent right now is my putting. I average around 1.86 putt's per hole and 1.89 per GIR.

I've been using Golfshot for awhile now. I love the app.

Honestly, there are two keys at least for me when approaching a green with an iron. That is alignment and tempo.

I know these things sound simple but that really is it for me. I know a lot of people feel added pressure to hit the green because there short game may not be up to snuff and feel they will lose strokes if they miss it. So they end up getting quick or laying off to try and not make a mistake then end up losing it short or right.

The thing that really gives me confidence in attacking greens are trusting my alignment and knowing that my swing plane will naturally fall into place and keeping down on the shot with my same tempo.

Now, obviously there is more to hitting greens then just those two things, but I've put in enough work with the other things such as grip, take away, posture etc. that those are really the only two things I have to worry about. The rest falls into place.

Random, but thinking back the best shot I hit of the day was on 15. I know the scorecard says 546 but it was playing more like 560-565 with where they had the tee box. Striped a drive into the wind about 306 and had about 260 into a front left pin location. Absolutely ripped a 3 iron hybrid to about 20 feet for eagle. Power lipped the putt unfortunately but striping that hybrid was a great feeling.

For those that want to save $30, Nike Golf 360 is another good round tracking app. Doesn't track penalties strokes but again saves you $30.
