Thanks! I could see upgrading eventually, but i have other money concerns now family wise (all good things, but expensive lol)....

May still look into blowing it out and maybe getting new fans sometime to get it quieter, when all the fans are going it sounds a bit like a jet

Actually feel like my card cant handle some games anymore...namely ubisoft uplay games

they constantly crash and freeze, but no idea why because they used to work fine.

I have an R9 280X so its powerful enough but for some reason it always crashes.

Any idea what this could be?

Ive had no issues with crimson and my 290. I can play everything maxed and get no crashes. Im really not sure, could be something other than a video issue.

What confuses or worries me (since I'm new on this) is that every video, article or page with a build there's always a "why did you choose X when Y would be better" or "I'd have got Z that's a little cheaper which gives similar results", as naming a few examples. It makes me hesitant about which build I should get, maybe I better share the ones I saw here for better opinions since I trust you guys better.
Alright you can always add a monitor down the road if you want. Once Pascal comes out or we get more concrete info on it should help a bunch.

You say "mainly" Uplay which implies other, non-Uplay games have similar issues. What other games crash on you and what drivers are you using? Have you tried updating or re-installing the drivers? Is it all the Uplay games you have that crash or just some of them? When they crash, does it crash to desktop or crash the whole system prompting a reboot? Also, how long does it usually take before it happens?

You're on Win10 too aren't you? I've been hearing about little issues happening with drivers and the automatic updates in that OS from both green and red camps. In any case, it shouldn't be a matter of your card not being able to handle games today, unless it were just a defective card. That it doesn't happen in every game has me thinking it's not the card itself that's the problem.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

I was leaning the same way Trob, even to the point it could be any drivers from audio to even motherboard drivers. Something is not functioning right and I don't believe its the video card.

                My own question.
So just recently my wireless 360 controller has started having a ton of disconnecting issues. Which is making playing rocket league very frustrating. Every 5 to 10 min, windows will do the little bloooppp blennnpppp sound effect like the controller has been disconnected, then immediately the sound effect happens again and its reconnected.

So I thought, maybe its these damn rechargeable batteries I've been using in the battery pack not holding enough charge OR not providing the correct power. So I just put the 360 controller to the side and grabbed my PS4 controller, which must be hardlined into a USB. It played fine for several days and then starting last night its started doing the exact same thing as the 360 controller, disconnecting and reconnecting. So its obviously not a peripheral issue, but instead something either faulty with Windows 10 or an windows update has messed something up. It has never did this on Win 7 and didn't start on Win10 until recently.

                Any ideas?

Try another bank of USB to rule out a hardware issue, unplug other USB devices to rule out a power issue. Check event viewer for a fault or something (USB driver stops responding out something).

Might not get you far, but those are what I'd try.

I've tried a back USB 3.0 slot, back USB 2.0 slot, front header 2.0 slot, and a USB 3.0 Hub slot. So that is what is leading me to believe its a windows driver issue from an update. I haven't looked at event viewer and need to for a better idea of whats going on. Now it "could" be a power issue, this 750w powersupply is almost 10 years old AND I just added a SSD. So I added another hard drive to the power draw.

I need to replace the powersupply but have been putting it off because when I checked the rails couple months ago everything was still solid with very little reduction in power being supplied.

I think I'll unplug my external HD and 4 port USB, that should be plenty to see if its a power problem.

Edit: Just found this, kind of sounds like my issue.

U play game positively and absolutely crash no question.

Some time ago i was apart of the test group for a few game like rhe division, for honor and some others...no issue

I do believe we got a big update from MS and then the crimson update came out 15.0 i think and now no ubisoft games will work. I'll check the message again, but i had to bow out of one test and can't even play an old game like ghost recon even with graphics low.

(Both amd and W10 got new upsates recently) could be Win10 like you said but how can i know?

Just recently got another smd update and 2k16 stopped crashing. All games on uplay froze and never into reboot just froze or crash to desktop

2k wasn't anything like that but did start stopping a few times at the half (haven't played it much in a few months to test)

                      . .but uplay for sur

Jetset radio never crashed, i had also downloaded star wars which kept freezing at initial install but worked perfectly when i downloaded it from disneys website

So yeah ALL ubisoft games. I was in a groove with assasins creed syndicate and now i csnt get it to play to save it

Definitely sounds like Uplay-specific issue then. A quick Google search yielded a few fairly recent results (from the past month) among multiple Uplay games that had similar CTD issues after updates to the client. There some suggestions posted, can't hurt to give it a look.

Game crash to desktop because of new Uplay update.

PC Crash, no Windows error, just Uplay.

Tried the two Uplay games I have but no crashes.

Wife had got a desk top a few years ago to do some school work on. It's basically collecting dust, other than the graphics card which I know isn't good enough to run games, what other specs do I need to look at? Curious if it would be best to just build onto that instead of buying one outright or building one. I keep going back and forth on PC gaming, but I think I want to take a stab at it.

CPU\PSU\RAM - a lot. Building onto a desktop that is years old is pointless. (especially considering this wasn't a gaming PC to begin with it seems)

If you're gonna do it right, best to start a new build.

Like Alt said, its pretty pointless to try and turn that PC into something its not. I'd suggest turning that old PC into a HTPC, throw Kodi on it, HDMI it to the TV, and boom good simple HTPC that is not collecting dust anymore
