However, more often now I'm having to run newer games on lower settings. I know that that is an inevitability, I just feel like its about time for an upgrade [emoji1]

You could probably get by with just a GPU upgrade. Someone with more expertise would need to chime in though.

Probably upgrade the psu and graphics card. It's an i5, I think he's okay with that.

Thanks for the input guys. I had actually planned in upgrading the GPU.

My thought process was I kind of needed to also upgrade my CPU to take full advantage. Is this not true? If I upgraded to a gtx 980 (or 1080 as people are saying to wait for that series price-wise) would I be doing a disservice by not upgrading my CPU with it?

Edit: after a little more reading, it seems like the gtx 1070 at a sub $400 price point should be right in my wheelhouse.

Yep I'd definitely get the newer GPU if possible.

Your CPU is still very relevant. I can't imagine it's a the bottleneck yet.

Side note, it's crazy how long PCs will last nowadays...I remember in the 90's and 2000's your PC would be trash in 4ish years. Obviously you still can upgrade graphics cards, but the base systems aren't getting that much better anymore.

Id say 6 years with a video card up grade at 3 years is about average. I pushed my last build to 8 years.

I feel like the 360/PS3 lasting as long as they did combined with the PS4/X1 being "underpowered" at launch allowed PCS a lot legs.

I built a modest system with a HD 7870 in summer 2012 and I am just now feeling that I can't play new games on Ultra settings. I think FO4 was the first game I saw where the 7870 was included in the minimum settings. While GTA V had it at recommended.

Luckily I am cheap and am still playing games that my GPU can blow away.

Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Looking for monitor suggestions. I currently have a 27" LG Flatron E2742, and a 22" LG Flatron W2252TQ.

Looking to replace the 22" with another 27". It still works pretty good, except I can hear a high pitched whizz coming from it when it's in sleep mode, and another 5" would be nice. I also use dual screens for work. I will have to use a VGA to HDMI converter though.

I plan on getting one of the new 480s here in a couple months and get back into more PC gaming. So I would like to take advantage of that aspect the most. Doesn't look like I would be able to game in 1440p, so I might just stick to 1080p. I would use this monitor for the gaming. Is Freesync still a thing? $400 budget. Cheaper the better.

Hmm if you're looking for a 27" for gaming, those monitors are a bit out of that price range.

You can find a rare deal here or there but I'd say for that budget get a nice 24" or save a bit more for a very nice 27".

I'm using one of these as a second monitor, was my primary for a long time.

It doesn't necessarily have to have freesync or be a "gaming" monitor. The 27" I am using now doesn't seem to have any input lag or motion blur.

No but the point will come (if you really are getting into PC Gaming more and more) where you will want a very nice monitor.

I'm at that point now, I just don't have the space for a 27" on my desk so I run 2 21" and just recently replaced my 3rd with an ASUS VG248QE to hold me over until we decide to move. . Fantastic 1080p/144Hz monitor for the price (250ish.)

144Hz is great, I'd even say it's more important to me than 1440p/4K at this point. Zero complaints about the monitor.

Just stashing away a small bit of cash every month because the monitor I do want is like 800 or so for the 27".
