I'm just trying to get people to see both sides here....

I highlighted "they..." Because it seems like you're willing to take what "they" say as being more believable... which is fair enough...

But who do you mean when you write, "they?"

Also... CD's had a life cycle of about 6 years for games.... If history repeats itself, DVD does not have much more time left....

    Just food for thought.

Re: IGN says PS3 might break you

All ya'll are hilarious on the real. Just hilarious. I read the whole freaking thread and couln't stop (internally) laughing at the different mindsets and things. By the way, MS has so much capability of expanding it's not even funny. By the way, wasn't there an article posted on this site talking about a company putting out a patent for a 800 GB media support using the same things we have nowadays? Any remarks.......

Re: IGN says PS3 might break you

I wouldn't consider myself a hardcore gamer I only play sports game and that is at most 2 hours a week. I only have a Ps2 and am on my 3 one. Sent one in took 6 months to get back it died. Sent another in, during spring break of 2005 and haven't heard a word from them. Which brings me to the one I have now. I have played an xbox and liked it. Wasn't into Halo but loved NFL Fever and that game almost caused me to get the xbox.

I have been on the fence about which console to get. At first I thought PS3 mostly because of Blue-Ray but I have got to be honest I have used my DVD player more than the one built in the ps2. I was also under the impression that the blue-ray discs could hold more thus making the ps3 a better option. But if it is going to be more than 500 I wont even consider it. I will be getting a 360. I remember geting a launch ps2 and wow maddens graphics were great (I was like 12 when it came out). Now that doesn't mean as much to me.

Wait a minute both consoles are going to look nice and since I pretty much only play sports games what difference does it make to me they are going to have the exact same games. I guess it will depend on what the community of gamers does. If there is a lot of roster/slider support for the 360 then that will be my pick.

Off topic but my current games are: both 2k6 basketball games, Madden and Ncaa football, ncaa baseball, true crime: NY, call of duty 2, and will be getting one of the next baseball games.

One question to those who own a 360 is there or will there be a save transfer device ala action replay?

There are also investigations in making the standard dvd significantly larger in storage capacity so I don't think that space will be a problem.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

What happens then? Should we all go buy this so called HD-drive that MS will be pushing? Only to have game developers not want to develop for it because it will limit their possible consumer base?

It's the same point as when people were pissed that a hard drive isn't standard with the 360... there are those that won't utilize it now b/c not all people who own a 360 have one. We could possibly get into a scenario where developers will have to compress their images and textures for some games b/c the DVD medium won't be adequate... thus making some cross platform games "better looking" on the PS3.
              .
Devs don't have a say...The publishers do. Publishers don't give a shyte about which one is easier to program for.

They care about one thing...installed base. If the PS3 is cost prohibitive to its fanbase, its going to crash. The "arms" race doesn't concern anyone who can read these words...as most of us will get both if its possible. The race is for the masses, and Sony better not let the MS infiltrate the mainstream before them. If the sytem comes in at a ridiculous figure, publisher support will dwindle, MS will begin to snap up exclusives, and Sony will go the way of Nintendo and Sega...supposedly unbeatable industry giants that were blown out of the water.

I can't see Sony doing this...but those are some cocky sumbitches. This should be interesting.

Re: IGN says PS3 might break you

I suppose this post was lost, but here it goes again regarding Blue Ray and HD-DVD disks having the technology built-in for companies to use that downsample the quality to not take full advantage of your shiny new HDTV.

Has anyone seen the article about HD-DVD and Blue Ray players downsampling DVD movie output to 960x540 (still better than SD DVD)? Pretty depressing for all who hope to see the full potential of HD from a next gen player. Though the technology is optional for the movie studios to use.

So, to me, this HD-DVD/Blue Ray stuff is all hype at this point. There is no clear standard out there and no gaming developer has endorsed either product for next-gen.

Yes, it's purely speculation on his part. No offense, but since he's in the TV business and your not, I think his estimate is probably very close to what the HDTV statistics will actually be in the coming years. I think he probably knows what he's talking about, afterall, you don't become a VP of a world major electronics corporation for nothing.

That's not a convincing article. I love how all these little websites claim to know everything about Blu-Ray and HD-DVD before Sony and MS do.

And don't anyone get smart and say that I claim to know everything about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD either because that same thing can be said about anyone of you who has posted thoughts or comments about either in this thread. So let's not go the hypocrite route. Personally, from what I have heard, I have made an educated opinion about Blu-Ray which has made certain appeal to me. That's me though, and some of you take it personally that I favor Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, or the PS3 over the 360. LEARN TO DEAL WITH IT! Let's just agree to disagree until the damn thing launches.

If your one of the people who simply think the 360 is better just because of Xbox Live, that's just online. The vast majority of console owners in the world don't play online anyway, so that is not a valid argument.

Honestly, this thread should be closed. I regret ever making it. All that can or should be said, has. And because you invested in a certain console and just want to back up the money you paid for it, don't criticize others who do not share your enthusiasm and try to bring down a console that others are looking forward to. One system is going through expected hurdles, while the other one is in late post-production. Let's wait until we have a clear shot at each, then pull the trigger.

I bet Nintendo thought that when they stuck with the cartridge...but even that had more space then the SNES ones...

sure it's a bigger extreme but the concept is the same.

There is NO way for ANYONE to predict how technology will change(especially with companies barely tapping the multi-core development technique) in the next few years. Having the space ensures the system is "future-proof". The new far-cry engine for PC looks as good as anything on 360, and it's only been out 2 months.

It also eliminates the need of bundling a hardrive because it will have no effect on game development or making companies compress the code. Sony will sell memory cards(I'm thinking they might go with sticks and they should have 4 or 8 GB one's ready by the time PS3 is dropping, they already are rumored for PSP) and help lower the impact of subsidising the console.

And of course it's going to be a major factor in the format war which Blue-Ray seems to be ahead of as it is.

And your last line pretty much sums up your whole mindset. A "Console War"
WHY DO WE HAVE TO PULL THE TRIGGER?? Don't you get it? Most people here do not care about that but rather the games.
You've done nothing but hype up the PS3 and shoot down everything 360 and yet have the balls to say "don't criticize others who do not share your enthusiasm and try to bring down a console that others are looking forward to." when you've constantly tried to "spoil" 360 owners fun.

lets wait for the Sony Conference is a couple of weeks (Feb 9th I think), and see what info, if any, is given about the system. Until Sony says something, its all speculation.

Just as with any console in the history of mankind, it's about the games, DAMN IT!

The only exception to that in recent years is the addition of online play, as that can play a determining factor in purchase decisions for some gamers.

Otherwise, it's all about the software, not the hardware.

Need proof? I present to you the 3DO, Dreamcast, Lynx, Jaguar and Sega 32X, all of which had superior hardware compared to their competitors and flopped like a freshly caught trout on the side of a stream.

                                It's about the games. Period.

                                Take care,
