    Also remember Activision fired HMX.
People hate what Guitar Hero has become, nothing more than a cash cow.

And they didn't fire HMX. Harmonix was bought out by MTV Networks. Once HMX made GH:80s, they filled their contractual obligations of 3 games and went on to do their own thing.

    HMX was hardly fired.

The orginal GH with HMX was awesome and got it all started. The Guitar Hero with Neversoft is what were hating on. They are paying band and labels to get exclusive rights to bands and songs which is annoying because they have the lesser product of the music games.

You can hardly blame them for that though. They have an obligation to Activision to make as much money as possible and getting the exclusives is good business. How many people on here have said they're going to get GHWT just for Tool or just for some other song(s). Frankly Neversoft NEEDS exclusives to compete because they can't produce as strong of a game.

All I'm really looking for is suggestions on how to first approach this game initially. Which instrument is easier to grasp a hold of....the guitar or the drums? I have limited play time experience with any of the GH games just to give you some background. Also, which mode in RB2 should I start with? In general, for someone with little experience with these rythmn based games, how long does it take until it clicks or I "get it"? I've played sporatically over the past couple years, and felt rather frustrated and very inexperienced. Do you most of you guys have to play through a song several times until you basically memorize the notes?

Any other tips would be very welcome. Thanks in advance. You guys have been extremely helpful thus far.
          Dan

It's probably slightly easier to start on guitar, but you can't really go wrong either way. The required skills for each instrument are a little different, so it kind of depends on what you're good at.

On guitar, it will probably only take a song or two to get the hang on Easy on guitar. You're basically just figuring out the mechanics of the game on that level, and learning how to time your strumming with what you're seeing on-screen. Medium is a little more difficult, since you'll be using 4 buttons instead of 3, but when a group of friends played last weekend, one of my buddies who had never played before moved up to medium after just a couple of songs. You basically just have to condition your fingers to do what you're seeing on the screen without really thinking about it.

The jump to hard is pretty difficult, since you are using the orange button at that point, so you have to shift your hand to cover the extra button. It takes a couple weeks of consistent playing to really get the hang of it. Eventually it just clicks and you'll be blowing through songs you never though you could beat. On GH3, I remember failing "Talk Dirty to Me" on Hard and thinking I'd never be able to beat it. Eventually I started scraping by, then passing with ease, then 5 starring it.

On the drums, you need to be a bit more physically coordinated. On easy and Medium, all you're really doing is keeping some simple beats with the songs. I'd say after about a week of playing, you should have medium pretty well mastered. I just recently bought my own drumset, but in my limited playing on a friend's drums, felt like it was getting too easy. The jump to Hard is pretty difficult, probably more than guitar (for me) because you have to coordinate your entire body.

There's a lot more kick-pedal notes, and a lot more off-beat stuff. After about 1.5-2 weeks at the hard level, I feel like it's clicking a bit, but I could see losing some of that coordination if I don't play every 2-3 days or so.

Either instrument is great fun, so you can't really go wrong. Hope that helps.

I know, I understand the move from there side, its just frusturating as a game that wants to play the best music available on the best game available (Rock Band)

Alright, I think I'm gonna wake up bright and early tomorrow morning around either 6 or 7, eat breakfast, etc, then do the endless setlist 2 without pausing. That way I'll be done around 1 I hope. This place is deserted right now because no one is getting back from fall break until tomorrow...

Call me crazy, but I'm going to Blockbuster at midnight to pick up the bundle. Probably won't play it until the morning though.

Picked up the PS3 bundle this morning.....12:01 a.m. to be more specific. Played a couple songs using the drums. Needless to say, I freakin' suck, but had an absolute blast sucking! This game is great. I can't believe I had never played it before. Now, I'm a bit loopy because I'm tired, but I can't wait to get up tomorrow morning and rock out......crap style!

Last night I tried playing after having a few beers in me (not much of a drinker anymore with a kid and all) and I was absolutely sucking. In spite of that, my drumming skills have improved immensely over the last week.

Oh I tried Visions on expert guitar and failed miserably. Yikes.

Well, I bought the bundle through BlockBuster for $190. However, a little over a month ago, I did one of those paid research studies (I sign up for several in the area) and it paid $150. So, I kind of looked at that as free money.

All this time, I was playing the guitar wrong. I always thought you had to hit the fret button and wammy bar at the same exact time. I didn't know you could hold down the fret button. It makes playing the guitar a heck of a lot more fun and simple. I'm not afraid to say I'm rocking out on easy so far. I've already discovered some really good tunes also.
