2022 Arizona Diamondbacks Cardinals Series Finale

      Overall Record:20-9(1st NL West)

Extra inning baserunning blunder costs D-Backs series sweep

It was the 12th inning in Sunday's series finale between the Diamondbacks and Cardinals. A hard fought pitchers duel was set for an epic ending as both Luke Weaver (8.0 IP 2 H 1 R 5 SO) and Miles Mikolas (6.1 IP, 3 H 1 R 2 BB 2 SO) had battled it out and baffeled the opposing offenses.

Both teams also had stellar performances out of J.B Wendelken (D-Backs) and Jake Woodford (Cardinals) who brought their teams into extra innings. Both would excel in the extra frames as well as neither team was able to score even their ghost runners in the 10th or 11th innings.

In that 12th inning however, Diamondbacks center fielder Daulton Varsho started off the inning as the ghost runner. Before the first pitch of the inning was thrown, Varsho took an extra step off of second base and was promptly picked off by Woodford. A mistake that hurt even more when the second batter of the inning, Ketel Marte hit a triple into left center. Carson Kelly would fail to knock Marte in and Arizona would walk the game off in the bottom of the 12th as Tommy Edman hit a single up the middle of the infield with two outs to knock in Lars Nootbaar.

The D-Backs won the series three games to one but that sweep would have felt really good. The team will now travel to Miami to take on the Marlins.

Twins Take Another Series in May

While the bats remained quiet, Minnesota took 2 of 3 at Target Field against the visiting Houston Astros, thanks in part to some solid pitching.

In game one, a Twins 3-2 victory, Joe Ryan went seven solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He improved to 2-3 on the year with his quality start. Miguel Sano hit a two-run shot, his seventh of the year, to give the Twins the lead in the sixth.

Game was a low scoring affair, and the Twins again came out on top by a score of 2-1. Sonny Gray hopefully started turning his season around with five and a third solid innings, and Luis Arraez hit an eighth inning two-run shot off Justin Verlander for the win. Arraez finished with three hits in the game.

The Astros took the series finale with a 4-3 win. Framber Valdez and Dylan Bundy each went six strong, but Valdez was slightly better in picking up the win. Gary Sanchez had three hits and two RBI in the losing effort.

The Twins will end their nine-game homestand with a three-game set against division rival Cleveland Guardians. Chris Paddack (3-2), Chris Archer (2-4) and Joe Ryan (2-3) are set to take the ball for Minny.

          NOTES

          Greene to begin rehab assignment
Centerfielder Riley Greene will begin a rehab assignment Thursday in Toledo. Greene will DH for the first couple games, then play the outfield. If all goes well, he should be back with the Tigers sometime during the next homestand (May 9-15) against Oakland and Baltimore. Greene has been out with a broken bone in his foot since late in Spring Training.

          Candelario to the 10-day I.L.
Jeimer Candelario was placed on the 10-day I.L. following Wednesday nights game against the Pirates, with a finger contusion. Candelario was hit by a pitch in the left hand in the second inning. Xrays were negative, but his pinky was swollen, so an I.L. stint was warranted.

At the All Star Break in year 1 with the Padres. Sitting in 1st place with a 64-34 record. LA in second at 52-43 who are riddled with injuries. AZ in 3rd at 48-49, COL in 4th at 46-51 and SF bringing up the rear at 40-56.

Tatis is the triple crown leader hitting .348 with 34 HRS and 87 RBI at the break.
Luke Voit is having a huge year with 29 HR and 74 RBI.
Machado adding 22 HRS with 66 RBI hitting .267.

Pitching is our strength and our rotation has been dominate.

            Musgrove 10-5, 3.47 ERA
            Darvish 11-4, 3.12 ERA
            Manaea 7-4, 3.22 ERA
            Clevinger 4-2, 2.16 ERA
            Snell 7-3, 2.45 ERA

Rogers is second in saves with 31 however i may demote him from the role as he has 7 blown saves an a 4.50 ERA. Luis Garcia would take his place who has an ERA of 1.50 and a WHIP of 1.04 in 24 IP. Pierce Johnson has been strong in the 7th inning with an ERA of 2.57 and WHIP of 1.04. Craig Stammen has been Mr. Reliable with a 4-0 Record and ERA of 1.45 in 37.1 Innings.

Tatis and Voit will both participate in the Home Run Derby. Manny and Tatis both voted as starters for the ASG. Voit also made the all star team as a reserve.

                Oakland A's

                Current Record: 5-7
                Standings: 4th in AL West

                Pitching
Frankie Montas has been holding us down in the rotation. 0.95 ERA, 20 Ks, 1-0 record. Sean Manaea has been a disappointment, and I cant quite get a hold of his release. AJ Puk, has been a good addition out of the pen and has helped us in the most inopportune times to get us a win. He has a 2-1 record in 6IP.

                Batting
Billy McKinney is leading the team in batting avg, homers and rbi's .351 avg, 5 HR, 7 RBI. The A's have had a ton of trouble with hitting with runners in scoring position. The team has been hoping for more consistency at the plate so that the guys can move around those bases and score more runs.

Cardinals sweep Pirates in St.Louis to extend divisional lead

The Cardinals (37-33) swept the Pirates in a 3 game series in St.Louis and now lead the NL Central Division by 2 games over the Reds and Brewers.

The Cardinals dominated the first two games of the series winning 7-2 and then 8-1 respectively, but Wednesday's finale was a battle that saw 14 innings of baseball. Albert Pujols hit his first homerun since the reunion to tie the game at 2 in the bottom of the 7th. In the 14th, Dylan Carlson delivered his 3rd hit of the night to score Tyler O'Neill for the walk off victory.

The Cardinals are off on Thursday as they travel to Boston for a 3 game series with the Red Sox in Fenway Park.

Tigers(19-12) take one of two at home vs Pirates(16-15)

Detroit came home to the overachieving Pirates and were only able to muster a split in the short two game series. Pittsburgh was able to withstand Detroit's late game charge in game one to hold on 6-5, despite the Tigers jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first. In game two, the Tigers once again jumped on them early, and were up 5-2 after four, and would be able to hold onto a 8-6 victory to send the home faithful back happy. Now they go to Houston for a fourpiece, starting off with facing former Tiger Justin Verlander.

Mets Franchise Season 1 (Games 1 through 3)

With Spring Training in the books the Mets opened up their 2022 season with a huge payroll, and high expectations.

                            Series vs Nationals

The Nationals traveled to Citi Field to open the 2022 season with a three game series.

                            Opening Day
Jacob deGrom was back from injury and was strong over 6 innings. allowing only 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 9. He did not allow a run. The Nats pitching dodged Patrick Corbin's 4 walks and one hit batter to stay in the game as the Mets only got 1 run in the second on an Edguardo Escobar solo home run through the first 6 innings. Turns out that is all they would need as both the Nats and Mets pen were very strong and the Mets got a clean 9th inning save from Edwin Diaz to hold on for the win 1-0

                            W- deGrom (1-0), L- Corbin (0-1), S- Diaz (1)

                            Mets
                            HR- Escobar (1)
                            RBI- Escobar (1)

                            Washington - 0 runs, 5 hits, 0 errors
                            Mets- 1 run, 4 hits, 0 errors

                            Game 2
The second game of the series was a back and forth affair that seemed as though the Nationals were destined to win. Every time the Mets took the lead the Nationals would come right back. The Mets would open up the scoring in the 4th on a Jeff McNeil homerun and then would score two more in the 5th on a Starling Marte 2 run homerun. But Max Scherzer could not hold the lead. He would give up a solo shot in the 5th to Yadier Hernandez and a two run shot in the 6th to K Ruiz and would leave the game after 6 with the score tied at 3. then in the 7th with one on and two our Joely Rodriguez would hang a slider that Juan Soto would deposit over the RF fence for a 5-3 lead. That is all the Nats pen would need as Joe Ross, Steve Cishek and Tanner Rainey would combine for 4 scoreless innings and the Nationals would even up the series.

                            W- Ross (1-0), L- May (0-1), S- Rainey (1)

                            Mets
                            2B- Nimmo (2)
                            HR- Marte (1), McNeil (1)
                            RBI- Marte (2), McNeil (1)

                            Washington- 5 runs, 6 hits, 0 error
                            Mets- 3 runs, 7 hits, 0 error

                            Game 3
The rubber game of the set was a nail bitter that early on looked as though the Mets would not win. Chris Bassitt was shaky early giving up 2 run homer to Josh Bell in the 4th and a RBI double to Hernandez in the 5th and just like that the Mets were down 3-0. However in the bottom of the 5th the Mets bats finally woke up as they got 3 solo shots in one inning from Nimmo, McNeil, and Marte to tie the game at 3. Both bullpens would hold steady as the 3-3 score would hold until the bottom of the 10th when Starline Marte would single up the middle scoring Travis Jankowski and the Mets would win 4-3 and take the rubber game of the series.

                            W- Diaz (1-0), L- Ross (1-1)

                            Mets
                            2B- Alonso (1)
                            3B- Marte (1)
                            HR- Nimmo (1), Marte 1 (2), McNeil 1 (2)
                            RBI- Nimmo (1), Marte 2 (4), McNeill 1 (2)

                            Washington 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 error
                            Mets- 4 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors

                            Other Series Notes

JD Davis left the first game of the series after being hit with a pitch. He was listed as day to day and made it back for game 3.

Mets and Braves Split Two Game Series

The Mets and Braves matched up for an early two game set at Citi Field

The first game of the series saw Tylor Megill make his season debut after beating out Taijun Walker for a rotation spot in the spring and he went up against Braves starter Ian Anderson. Megill was fairly sharp overcoming giving up a game lead off homerun to Ozzie Albies to pitch 6 innings of 5 hit and 2 run ball. The Mets however hit Anderson hard to the tune of 4 homeruns. Lindor hit 2, Alonso and Escobar added 1 each and the Mets won the game 6-3

                              W- Megill (1-0), L- Anderson (0-1)

                              Atlanta - 3 runs, 6 hits, 0 errors
                              Mets- 6 runs, 7 hits, 0 errors

The second game saw the Braves looking for a series split and getting it. Mike Soroka and Carlos Carrasco matched up and both pitched a solid 5 innings with the game tied at 2-2 after 5. It stayed that way until the 8th when the Braves got back to back RBI singles from Orlando Arica and Marcell Ozuna to take a 4-2 lead. In the ninth the Mets would get 1st and third and one out against Kenley Janssen but he then tighten up to strike out Mark Canha and Starling Marte to secure the save.

                              W- Minter (2-0), L- Williams (0-1), S- Jansen (2)

                              Atlanta- 4 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors
                              Mets- 2 runs, 7 hits, 0 errors

                              Around the League

Around the league some young talent has hit the DL with A's OF Cristian Pache getting hurt and Guardians 3B prospect Nolan Jones as well both hitting the 10 Day DL

While 6 games into the season no teams remain unbeaten both the Phillies (0-5) and the Royals (0-5) are looking for their first win. Phillies Joe Girardi could be on the hot seat very early this season.

Next up the Mets (3-2) travel to Washington to take on the (3-2) Nationals
