I didn't see anywhere in that article that stated Price didn't have a say. Quite possibly this was discussed with Price. Maybe he wants him to start, maybe he doesn't, but in no way does this article say that Price had no input.

If Chapman is going to stay in the bullpen then I like the idea of trying to get a 100+ innings out of him. Kind of like the old days (what, maybe 15 years ago?) when closers would pitch the 7th or 8th inning on.

I've got Cano, Pedrioa as the best and then Utley, Carpenter, Hill, Zobrist, Phillips all in the next group.

Now that I think about it moving forward I would say that he is around fourth - sixth with Cano, Pedroia, Kipnis, Phillips/Carpenter/Hill/Zobrist. Phillips' offensive number have been nosediving since 2011. He still is the most productive fielding second baseman in the game in my opinion.

Honestly with Latos, Cueto, Bailey, Leake and Cingrani is it really a better option to move one of those guys out and give the closer role over to Broxton? I do think that if Cueto's back starts flaring up in the spring and he cant get it resolved or Cingrani regresses on his secondaries then they will look harder at moving Chapman into the rotation. But moving him back isn't going to be easy and will more than likely burn a year of his career at this point and hamstring your rotation management. Just doesn't make any sense when you have a 5 man going into the season that you believe in.

Pushing Chapman to those types of innings out of the pen will be very difficult. It will require complete overhauls both mentally and physically to his game. You pay Broxton and Marshall a fortune for the 7th and 8th and you have to use them and give the 9th to Chapman. Now that's assuming Marshall isn't Masset 2.0

I agree 100% with your first paragraph. As for the 2nd paragraph, I get what you are saying but I do think it is possible to stretch him out a little. And if you have Marshall and Broxton, at least you have someone to close a game should Chapman get tired and they need him. Also, if it works out, then you have at least one closer that can be traded for hopefully a key piece for a playoff run. Except with the team we have today, my guess is they will be lucky to make the playoffs. Still need a leadoff hitter (unless they roll the dice with Hamilton) and a power hitting left fielder. And if they don't roll the dice with Hamilton, they need an everyday center fielder as well.

Since they are saying they aren't trading Chappy or Phillips, and assuming that holds true, the only other player worth a trade to get something in return would be Bailey. I would hate to lose Bailey after all these frustrating years and him starting to show what he can do consistently. But if he doesn't want to sign long term, as he has shown so far, then my guess is he gets dealt at some point and probably no later than the trade deadline next year.

I have no "inside" info and really havent heard any experts talk about it.
But.....With Cano signing with the Mariners and Granderson signing with the Mets i fully expect Phillips to be traded to the Yanks in the next couple weeks.
They have to made some kind of move to improve their horrible team.
Losing your best player and one of your better players from 2 years ago will push them to do something.

I read somewhere that they would target Omar Infante.

Not sure he makes the splash that trading for Phillips would.

I agree but Infante is a free agent and they don't have to give up anything for him besides cash which they have plenty of. Will be interesting to see what they do.

Bailey is the odds on to be traded if they do anything. They won't be able to afford him long term, he would be willing because he likes Price but the Reds can't afford him so he would be the guy I would imagine they would move if anyone. But I really think they think they are fine going into the season with Hamilton leading off in center and Luddy/Heisey platoon in left. But the last thing this team needs is to experiment at the top of the lineup. May be another season of BP leading off, at least until Hamilton is consistently able to get on base.

The Yankees just spent 3 million on Kelly Johnson to replace Cano so I doubt they would move on Phillips unless the price is right and/or they were giving up on Arod and planning on moving Johnson to third.

If they were to move Phillips I might expect a Schumaker/Hamilton platoon at second.

If they are really going to trade him I would hope it would be to LA at this point for Kemp or Crawford. That's really the only viable option I could see at this point of someone that could afford him and someone that had something comparable to give.
