Matt Devlin doing the play by play tonight. Awesome. Absolutely love having him, especially in place of Buck. Wish this was a full time thing.

JJ hit by a comebacker right there but no issues. He's still pitching, no stop in play.

Devlin is horrible for basketball but his subdued style is PERFECT for baseball. Pair him up with a more colorful analyst and you have a good booth IMO.

You heard Devlin in the playoffs? He's great. Devlin is great, Armstrong is great, but when they're together, they're horrible, it's the weirdest thing.

Jays need to win at least 3 more game before all star break!

On baseball central they talked about moving Lawrie back to 2B. I wouldn't mind that, but only if it's because it's much easier for Jays to get a starting 3B over a starting 2B. Would be funny if Jays could sign Cano, but no way should/could anyone compete with Yankees in bidding war.
I'd put second base as a higher priority than catcher. Just my two cents though!

But catcher actually calls the game. They're involved in every single pitch thrown. 2B are involved in (on average) 5 plays a game. Not to mention, having a good C, means our pitchers will be happy too. With all the vets in the pitching staff, that should be a priority to keep them happy and do something that'd help them pitch better games.

When they won 11 in a row the pitching seemed just fine. The bullpen seems just fine. You're just trying to find excuses to get rid of JPA. His offensive ability is all you need to say. No reason to make up more. In some ways, they would have been better off keeping Buck, who has shown that he has some offense for us before, and not even going after Dickey after the meh season he has had. Of course, we also would have needed Morrow to have been healthy the whole season so far and for Ricky Romero not to be pitching like he is on Mars.

It was fairly apparent we were gonna gas can at some point.

And defensive abilities (or lack thereof) as well. Not a starting catcher.

I hate to say it, but JPA is probably more cost-efficient than Buck. Signing Jackson or Liriano in FA, keeping d'Arnaud, and trading JPA (hell even Synder) for a pitcher would have been the optimal move. I can't be mad about trading TDA, I can't be mad about trading Synder, I can't be mad about trading for Dickey, but trading TDA and Synder for Dickey all together? Too much.

And JJ not to miss so much time, Happ to not have the worst luck ever, Nolin not to gas can, etc.

Actually, funny you should mention RR cool J. http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2013/7...e-recap-july-9

Romero had a sterling performance last night.

Apparently this whole "Lawrie at 2B" experiment might be more than that. Gibbons was on the radio yesterday and said that the Jays may use him at 2B a bit but then in postgame of the Cleveland game last night he made it sound more like Lawrie's future with the Blue Jays is at 2B.

Talk about giving out mixed signals!

Lawrie DID come up as a 2B so it's not like it's a crazy idea and if he can get his bat going again he could be the best option at 2B since the days of Robbie Alomar. (sad but true) Of course if that's the case than it sounds like Bonifacio might be the odd man out and traded away while Izturis/De Rosa split time at 3B unless the Jays get a 3B in trade. Either way it sounds like we're going to see a permanent answer at 3B by the start of 2014 at the latest with Reyes at SS and Lawrie at 2B and Kawasaki being a super sub playing both SS/2B.

So far, they are doing almost exactly what I predicted. I said 1-2 vs. Detroit, 0-3. I said they should go 4-2 against the Twins the rest of this year and they have 2-1 so far. I said 1-2 vs. Cleveland, 1-2. I wish things had gone better above us in the division, but guess we'll see on that front.

Jays not expected to sign Bickford. Good, really, it'll be nice to have that pick in a better draft next year.

                              Let the trade talk begin!

I think they should trade Oliver. He'd have a lot of interest as a left hander from a contending team. He's not coming back next year. It wouldn't even surprise me if AA promised to trade him to a contender if the season fell apart way back when Oliver was thinking about retiring.

I also think they should explore trading Rasmus. He's having a decent season and they need to open up a outfield spot for Gose. My feeling is Rasmus would be attractive to a lot of teams and he could bring back a good package of prospects. I imagine the club will wait first to see if Melky gets suspended because they will need Gose up in the majors if Melky gets hit for 50 games. (I don't think it will happen since he was already suspended but it makes sense to wait for the punishments to be handed out).

I can't believe how far back this team is out of the playoff race. It's just shocking.

                                Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

Gah, forgot to post this yesterday, apparently. The Blue Jays signed LHP Jacob "Jake" Brentz and 1B Ryan "Rowdy" Tellez for $700,000 and $850,000, respectively. They have also decided not to sign their #10 pick, Phil Bickford. They will receive the #11 overall pick in the 2014 MLB draft (I think).

Excellent, excellent drafting by Anthopoulos. I don't know why I'm shocked to say that, because AA has always been a great drafter, but he's still gone a wee bit bat**** lately, so it's nice to see him pull off something great. We got some nice late round hitters (Brendan Kalfus, Garrett Custons, Dan Jansen) who could turn into prospects, we got the #11 (I think) pick in the 2014 draft which is just such a ridonkulous draft imo, and we got two elite prospects: Brentz, a high schooler, can hit 97 from the left side and has a solid change, and was ranked 10 spots higher than Bickford by Keith Law. Tellez is a huge, huge power hitting 1B who's exactly the kind of prospect that we need. The homers he hit are "stuff of legend in the Sacramento baseball community," according to Kiley McDaniel.

                                Great job drafting.

Oh, and this is kinda sorta important too maybe. Transaction: The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled Brett Lawrie from AAA Buffalo and is expected to be in the lineup against the Baltimore Orioles for Saturday's game.
