Mets Increase Division Lead!!!!!

Mets get best of Phillies at home, increase edge in NL East.

The Mets defeated the Phillies 5-4 in a divisional battle last night before a crowd of 56,503 at Shea Stadium to build their lead in the NL East to 4 games over the second-place Phillies. Jose Guillen had a big game offensively, bashing a home run and driving in 2 runs. It wasn't pretty, but Oliver Perez -- with a huge assist from his bullpen -- recorded his 5th win of the season despite getting touched up for 8 hits in just 5 innings.

The Mets and Phillies wrap up their series this afternoon with Claudio Vargas (8-7, 3.21) and Fabio Castro (10-5, 4.10) projected to start at Shea Stadium. Carlos Delgado hopes to add to his 17-game hitting streak.

Oh yes. I only play the big club games. It wouldn't be fair to play the minor league playoff games when I simulate them all season. Thanks for the kind words gtm, and thanks for following along.

Orioles big bats help bullpen survive monumental collapse!!!!!

Baltimore, MD - The Orioles took an 8-3 lead to the 9th inning tonight at Camden Yards before the bullpen allowed 4 runs in the 9th and it took George Sherrill to get Daric Barton, who previously hit 2 solo home runs in the game, to ground out with the bases loaded to end the ballgame. The offense for the Orioles put the team in that good position heading into the 9th tonight as the big 3, Nick Markakis, Luke Scott, and Aubrey Huff drove in all 8 Oriole runs. The O's trailed 2-0 in the 4th when Aubrey Huff followed a Luke Scott RBI single with a 3-run home run just over the wall in right center field to put the O's up 4-2 at the time. After a Travis Buck home run for the Athletics in the 7th, the "Birds" responded with clutch 2-out RBI hits from Nick Markakis and Luke Scott in the bottom half of the 7th to extend that lead to 6-3. The next inning, Nick Markakis once again singled with the bases loaded to plate 2 more RBI's, giving him a team high 97 on the year. Radhames Liz was fortunate enough to pick up the victory after the near collapse in the 9th to give him a 7-5 record on the year. With the win, the Orioles win the series and will open their doors for the "Tribe" beginning tomorrow night.
