    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Finally got my 910F today. Headed out to the range when I got him and hit around 50 balls with the 910F. After hitting it I'm blown away. Got it set to C3 (standard 15* loft that has more of a draw bias to it). Couldn't tell exactly how far I was hitting it but it was landing well past the 200 yard marker. I'm guessing about a 230ish carry. Club felt way better than my old Nike VR-S Covert 3 wood. I'm going to purchase the 5 wood version of the 910F tomorrow off the same ebay store with the same shaft, flex and weight.

After my range session I went into Golf Town to get the grip changed on the 910F. As they were doing that I went and hit the new Ping S55's. Part of me wishes I never tried it, I seriously wanted to sell my AP2's and buy the S55's lol. Here's a quick image I took of my best swing with an 8 iron.

The employee at Golf Town was impressed and asked me if I played competitively or not. I told him no and that I played just for fun. He replied, "With the swing you've got, I would consider it." It kind of got me thinking about possibly entering some small tournaments in and around my area to test the waters so to speak.

What's your handicap? I played in a couple amateur open events. It really comes down to putting AND not having a blow up hole. The tournaments I played in, you had to be an 8 or less.

I found that I could play with the scratch golfers, the main thing that separated me was the 1 blow up hole per round and missing a few 3 or 4 footers and burning the edges on the 8 and 10 footers. You just can't give away strokes anywhere and have a chance to compete. The last one I was in, on day 1, I thinned a shot with an 8 iron from 155 on the 3rd hole after starting out birdie, par, and it went OB over the green. I ended up with a 7 on the par 4. So from 1 under to 2 over in the blink of an eye. Missed a 4 foot birdie putt on #4, parred from 10 or 12 feet on the next hole....yada yada ended up with a 76. Shot an 81 on day 2.

If I would just make all those makeable putts and not have that 1 stupid shot, I would be fine. But that's golf. The best I ever shot was -4 through 14 and then hit a tee shot under a pine tree ended up with a double and then another double and just like that back to even.

Good luck, you should try it. Despite all my tales of woe, its always been fun.

I hover around 9-10. I can hit my driver/ fairway woods and my irons very well, it's around the greens where like most people, I give up the most strokes. Like you I always burn the edges on short putts, or I leave chips and pitches short of the hole, or my lag putts stop well short of the hole leaving me a lengthy putt to save par.

If I could eliminate some of the stupid mistakes I make around the green during my rounds, I could easily be in between 4-7 handicap (at least that's where I'd like to be). I usually shoot anywhere between 79-85 on average. Just a few missed short putts during a round and a couple horrible chips/ pitches put me nearer to 85. If I drained most of the short putts I miss, I'd probably shoot 79-82 consistently based off of how I currently play.

          Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Two weeks ago, I played for the first time since tearing cartilage and a ligament in my right knee in May. So, first round in over 8 months, only the third round I've played in the last 15. Shot a 140. Ouch. Granted, it was a perfect storm of things for me to play poorly. Longest layoff since I started playing, played in a foursome (I play better as a single or in a twosome), terrible weather (it was below 40, raining, and very windy), and had a cart. But still, that 140 hurt.

Went out today, however, and shot a 103. Since my best round ever is a 97, I felt pretty good about that. Got me excited to play some more.

On the downside, noticed a pretty good sized notch on the face of my 3 wood. I don't normally use it a ton, so for now, I'm gonna try and go without it. Puts me down to 12 clubs in the bag though. Might try and add a 3h, since I have a yardage gap between my 4h and 5w right now.

The short game and putting is the most critical. I was striking the ball terrible one day and shot a 77 with 25 putts for the round, including a 3 putt. Every missed green I was getting up and down. I worm burned some drives that day too which I never do. It was crazy, I drive 1 into the weeds, hit my second shot out, put my 3rd shot on the green and make a 15 footer for par. Miss the green on a par 3, blast out of the sand to 6 feet, bottom of the cup. I probably had 3 greens in regulation that round.

Then there are other rounds, lace a drive. Wedge into the green to 8 feet, burn the edge, 3 feet past, Yipiity yipp yip....3 putt, bogey and move on. I had a 39 on the front one day with 21 putts......

            Its a fickle game.

              Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

So I was in warmer climes over the holidays, and ended up getting a few rounds in. Since I didn't have my sticks with me, I rented some from the course we played at, and I have to say, modern iron technology is amazing...I pretty much had my same crap outside-in off-center swing, but with the Callaways X-hot irons that were in the rental set, everything was flying right at the pin. I mean, I was sticking 160-yd approaches to within 5-10 feet, and I KNOW I'm not that good. The driver was also incredible; again, same swing as always, but bombing it well over areas I know I usually can't reach with my set. Made me realize how much modern club technology has advanced.

For reference, I still have a 10-year old set of Titleist 804's which I love, but you have to be better than I am to get the best of those clubs. My driver is a similarly old Cleveland hand-me-down which I think is actually awesome, but I couldn't nail it like I could w/ the Callaway rental set. It almost made me want to go out and buy a whole new set of sticks...but then I kept thinking, I should probably fix my swing first before investing. I mean, I almost felt a little fraudulent with some of those iron shots and drives because unless I was having some kind of bizarre good-swing day (unlikely, since I played 2 days later w/ a friends' old beater set and I hacked it up big time), I sort of knew I was being aided to a great degree by the technology. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just wasn't used to it is all.

I'm so pissed that my winter schedule didn't allow me to take lessons like I wanted. Still may try in the next few months, but I feel like I wasted this "off-season". I played so much golf in 2013 and watched my scores drop on average by 12 strokes that I should've capitalized on that momentum and took the damn lessons.

Who knows, maybe you'll still come back fine with the break and still keep improving.

I'm still getting out there as well as practicing often and feel like I'm regressing. Can't seem to hit an iron anymore. Very frustrating.

                    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Well I was able to get out this past Monday for a round with a friend (Patrick).
Was scared a bit due to not being able to play lately and I knew I would be pretty much off.

We both didn't do too bad. We had some bad moments but overall we did ok for not playing in a bit.

                    Front 9 I shot a 49 and he shot a 50. Back 9 I shot a 45 and he shot a 44.. lol

We tied so we went back to play a 1 hole playoff.

                    I went first.
                    356yd Dogleg right --Par 4.

Hit my drive well but just trickled through fairway and had 122 in
Patrick pushed his drive right into the trees and I thought it was over.

He went next and had a freaking gap to hit through straight at green. He hit a very nice punch under the trees and ended 5 yards short of green. The door was still open for me though.

I went with an easy PW and it hit just on the green but spun back off about 2 yards off the green.

He then promptly chipped up to gimme range and I chipped up and to the right for about a 4 foot putt.

I just missed the putt just to the right and he tapped in for the win.

Now we have snow all over and I'm dying to get back out.

Had a lot of fun and I expect my game to really show improvement this year.

Feb is when I get my new irons so I have that to look forward to also.

There won't be any golf for me anytime soon here in Minnesota but I can't wait for the season to start. I'm a golf pro so winters are especially painful for me. At least I have my new irons coming this week so I can do some club work.

                        Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

                        Thinking about a new putter.
I have an old mallet putter that I was actually pretty good putting with.
I then bought the PING Scottsdale putter which quite frankly I knew would be a while getting comfortable with...but that simply hasn't happened yet.

So I'm itching to possibly go back to my old putter but.. because I get excited over new stuff.. might grab a new one and will definitely be a mallet type as I just like the extra weight and "bulkiness"

Does anyone use a center shafted putter? I practiced with one the first time ever yesterday and it seems like I could get used to it easily.

Lastly.. does anyone else have a mixed bag? Meaning part one brand part another.
I recently got a Callaway driver to go with my Callaway irons so I could be "All one brand".. but I plan on keeping my TM Driver.

I guess until I get an endorsement deal.. screw it. lol
                        Just curious how others feel.

                              My current bag is:

Cobra Amp Cell Blue set at 9.5* with a White Tie in X flex

4-PW Titleist 695CBs with X200s soft stepped once playing +1"

Taylormade Ghost Manta belly that has a "versa" stripe and has been counterbalanced

I haven't found my 3 wood for the season yet and I don't currently have any wedges because I'm waiting on my new irons to figure out the gaps I need to fill.

Since I have no sponsor I just go hit a bunch of stuff and what ever I feel and see I was hitting the best I buy. Now apparel wise I am a Nike whore.

Nike whore here also for apparel.. lol
