A game being uncompressed or compressed won't make a difference in terms of a game being better or not. I'm basing this on things I know about development and working with other's who have developed software/games etc...

Compression would only help processing a bit, since there wouldn't need CPU utilization to decompress the information..

          PlayStation 3 to join Folding@Home for Cure@PS3

There's no denying it, even though the PlayStation 3 may be the most late, most expensive, and most, um, well ventilated of this this generation's consoles, Sony's also going out of their way to make the device appear as versatile as possible. So hell, if your machine is going to burn energy when not in use, best to put that power suck toward a good cause, right? Stanford and Sony have announced that PlayStation 3s will be able to participate in Cure@PS3, making gamers' consoles massively parallelized computing nodes for the Folding@Home project. (You're on Engadget's Folding@Home team, right?) Right up top is a taste of the eye candy that awaits those who dedicate their Cell processor to stamping out cancer with the Stanford crew, but the veneer doesn't stop there: click on for a slew of sexy new PS3 pics that just surfaced.

Anybody who uses the word "sexy" to describe electronic equipment really needs to be slapped.

I don't see anything that would make me want this system. I've bought a PS and PS2 on launch. This year is a different story. They don't have any exclusive titles to warrant a $600 purchase.

Sony shares slid almost three percent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange yesterday after an industry analyst dropped his rating of the company and halved his PlayStation 3 shipment expectations for the fiscal year, according to the Reuters news service.

In a note to investors, Mitsubishi UFJ Securities analyst Masahiko Ishino expressed doubt in Sony's ability to reach its goal of 6 million units shipped by the end of its fiscal year, March 31, 2007, the report said. Ishino instead offered a new projection of 3 million units, saying that Sony would fall short of its goal because it wouldn't be able to obtain enough of the high-tech parts it needs.

While such a shortfall in systems could damage Sony's game business in the short term, Ishino was also concerned with its longer term effect on the company. If Sony can't get the units out the door, it will take longer for the company to recoup its substantial investment in developing the system. That was the reason Ishino gave for lowering his rating of the company's stock, Reuters reports.

Last week, Sony Computer Entertainment America president Kaz Hirai told GameSpot he was expecting to ship 2 million PS3s by the end of the 2006. That was quickly followed by clarifications from Sony saying that the company was still planning to have 2 million systems ready for the November launch, and another 2 million shipped by year's end.

When asked by GameSpot to address the analyst's note, a Sony rep said the company does not comment on each analyst report, speculation, or rumor that surfaces. However, he did reiterate Sony's previous position.

"SCE has not changed its shipment schedule and is still on target to ship 2 million by launch window, 4 million by the end of this year and 6 million by the end of FY 06," the representative said.

Sony's shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell 150 yen ($1.29) to close Thursday at 5,100 yen ($43.78).

I can't remember, but how many 360's were shipped in the US on launch? Wasn't it 1,000,000? Figure if Sony is looking to get out 3,000,000 by March, will the US get get anywhere from 1 - 1.5 million at launch even if that when they have to still launch in JP and Europe.

I'm sorry, but Blu Ray is going to be the one component of the PS3 that could be the deciding factor of this console war as it turns the tides to go backwards for them here in the US. It caused delays in getting the 360 out in the Spring launch window this year and now the Cell chip has been causing problems with systems croaking at the manufacturing plants that caused another hault a month ago.

If by March 07 Sony has 3 Million units shipped, while by then the 360 has 15 million, Sony will have to do a lot to catch up.

If they were smart, they would have either of left out the Blu Ray and launched sooner or else just released a $500 system with smaller HDD and trim down some features, that way people wouldn't second guess purchasing the PS3.

Just my thoughts on this whole PS3 deal the closer we get to launch. PS3 will sell out but Sony I think has also put themselves in a bind.

Right now, there's no compelling reason to buy a 360, PS3, or Wii.

I'm way more hyped about my recent purchase of a PSP!

Geez, how lackluster is this next gen looking at this point? Ridiculous.

PS3 will be a buy christmas of 07' if we get MGS4 and FF 13 for the holidays, both are notorious for pushing back dates.

I see PS3's collecting alot of dust until those titles come out.
