I prefer to run, I could do a bike machine but I just can't ride a bike. It kills my knees for some reason, a minute to two in and I gotta pull over to rest them.

I'm the opposite. I could do a bike but I can't do bike machines. Bike machines are the ones that get my knees the most.

        Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

I was never a "gym rat". And as a longtime smoker, I can't run for distance. I wanted to try something to lose my "beer belly" (even though I haven't had a drink in 4 years). Insanity and P90x looked good, but again, I don't think I could work out hard for 30 mins or an hour straight. I'm 44 and have been outta shape since leaving the military in 1997 and haven't even attempted working out.

Ok, all that said, yesterday my wife found a Total Gym at a yard sale for cheap. I've seen the infomercials, and read the reviews (mostly all positive). So we decided why not.....(pause for laughter)....

So I'm not looking to become Stallone or Ahnold, but right now, I'll admit----my arms, shoulders and stomach area hurt after two days of working out. Now I'm a junk food junkie, but I'm trying to limit that as well. My wife recently had hip replacement surgery, so for her as well, this Total Gym is perfect as there's no jolting impacts.

This is not an endorsement! Just jumping in here to say that I'm trying something to somewhat get in shape and hoping to find the encouragement to keep going. Yes, I hurt, but if I use that as an excuse to stop, then what's the point? Lol....

My advice is to do something for 30 minutes aleast 5 times a week if it's working out or going for a walk. I think walking is the best exercise overall because you can do it everyday and also brings your heartbeat at that fat burning zone. Low impact and you can take the time to listen to music, sports or a book.

You also gotta limit the junk food. A slice if pizza takes one hour of jogging to burn off.

I always get of my friends that work out and have a burger after. They just threw out what they worked out.

I used to not really like walking because I thought it was pointless, but jogging/running a mile or two just takes too much out of me. Getting in the habit of just walking on the treadmill and jogging for a few minutes every now and then.

I used to think that too but start putting on a deep incline at brisk pace then do it for an hour you're burning a ton of calories from fat. What I like about is that it doesn't take a lot out of you and it's much easier to stay consistent.

Right now I wear a neoprene sweat suit from kutting weight that consist of a body suit, shirt, pants and hat and go for a walk in neighborhood in the Arizona heat and I'm drenched in sweat it looks like a I took a shower with my clothes on. I lost more than 5 pounds of water weight just doing that for 30 minutes.

Never been a fan of walking myself, but I'm gonna try this. Mainly my cardio has been swimming laps every other day. Swam in the middle of a 22 hr intermittent fast and paid for it that night. My body was begging for mercy.

May I ask why? Unless you're attempting to cut to make weight for a big fight, what is the benefit of dehydrating yourself?

Losing 5 lb's of water weight is just that... water weight (which you can actually lose just as easily by drinking more water... when you're dehydrated your cells actually store more water than when you're properly hydrated).

Sweat suits don't help you burn more fat, in fact, it could be argued that they actually result in you burning fewer calories since your body is slowing itself down to try and prevent overheating. Its the same reason you burn more calories if you were to sit in a cold room vs a hot room. In the cold room, your metabolism speeds up and your body tries to keep itself warm. In a hot room, everything slows down to try and cool you down.

You're doing yourself a disservice by wearing a sweat suit. It's a fake fix. You're not burning any extra fat or calories, all you're doing is literally dehydrating yourself by losing water weight (which you'll just gain back anyway). That's the complete opposite of what you should be doing!

Yeah you are probably right, thanks for the advice. I'll try my cardio without it, maybe with just the pants to keep warm. I do hydrate well and not felt dizzy or anything.

                      Well thats good!

It's not necessarily a bad thing if you are keeping properly hydrated before and after. Its just not really helpful either (and potentially harmful, especially when combined with the Arizona heat).

At the end of the day, water weight is still just water weight, and 99% of that you're going to put back in your system anyway (or you should at least lol). If you're planning on going to the beach later and want to look good, or something along those lines, then that's one thing and at least there's a reason for trying to quickly shed that water weight. But just be aware that as far as long term improvements, it is essentially useless.

It depends what else they eat...if you eat 2 meals a day at 500 calories a piece...your still at a calorie deficit.

                          Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

Finishing up my last final of summer sessions tonight, that means I'll have plenty of free time. I worked out pretty consistently for two years when I graduated high school. I was able to put on some muscle and looked pretty big for someone my size (5'7). I've never done any cardio though. I was overweight as a child, but as I grew up I sort of thinned out a bit as my frame matured. Only problem is I still have some baby fat thats covering up my muscles/abs. Over the next 3 weeks I want to make an effort to finally lose this weight thats been following me around my entire life.

My diet is pretty good as it stands, but I'm going to take it to the next step. I plan on cutting out all processed food, increasing the amount of veggies I eat, sticking to lean meats, and eliminating my main vice which is cheese. I only need to lose 5 lbs at the most so I think this is completely attainable. Once I get it off I know I'll be able to maintain it because my normal diet is still pretty good.

When I get home tonight its time to do some cardio for the first real time in my adult life.

My mom has been on a diet for much of the summer so been picking up tips, etc before I get up to FSU next friday. Going to start limiting red meat as I never really knew how bad it could be for you to eat all the time, have had some turkey substitutes and has seemed to be decent also going to try salmon(I already love most other seafood, chicken, and turkey).

Try and see if you can stop eating red meat for a week. I had a couple co workers do it and they been telling me how much better they feel.

The last three days I've been doing three sets of these reps (assume all reps are "till failure"):

                                - Wide grip push ups
                                - V-ups
                                - Medium grip push ups
                                - Reverse crunches
                                - Close grip push ups
                                - Bicycle kicks

These are all done with one sip of water between the chest/ab exercises, and only 1-2 minutes of a break between sets (with more water drinking during this time). Well, today I dry-heaved over the toilet after I was finished. I was just trying to mix my whey protein drink, and I felt like I was about to throw up. My muscles were just overworking.

Tomorrow I'm going to the gym to do essentially what I was doing on the beach with the push ups and the biking, and Thursday I will be off, with the exception of coaching a softball practice.
