    Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

Back and biceps night was a success.

I'm actually excited to work legs tomorrow. We're doing a wellness challenge at work, between everyone. They're all wanting to cut weight and pool money to see who can lose the most in a month and the winner get the pot, but I don't have many "lbs" to drop. I could cut some body fat, but It's nearly impossible for me to lose actual weight. My bone structure is huge and I lift enough to where I'm actually maintaining my weight around 226. I've weighed the same thing for the past 6 months, yet I've got a lot more muscle and I'm a lot leaner than I was.

I suggested that we do body fat %. That's the only way I can compete.

It would be between our store and our store on the other side of town.

You gotta start somewhere. I'm just getting back in the gym after about a 2 year layoff. I used to be 205lbs at 6ft tall with about 9% body fat, lifted 5 days a week and ran 2 miles 5 times a week. So last week I started back and I did chest on tuesday and biceps wednesday after that my entire upper body was sore for the remainder of the week. I was back in the gym last night though. We just gotta keep at it.

Taken directly from Alex Hutchinson's Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights
"Static" stretching reduces strength, power, and speed for an hour or more, thanks to a combination of neuromuscular effects and lowered force transmission in "loose" muscles and tendons.

Warming up with "dynamic" stretching exercises raises the temperature of muscles and prepares them for exertion but doesn't decrease strength, power, speed, or endurance.
Hutchinson has a Ph.D and this whole book uses scientific data to support training ideals/myths. I highly recommend it.

When I read some of what others do, I try and put it all in perspective. Their responsibilities are different than mine. I have 4 boys all under 9 and they take up a lot of my time. My wife and I share our time at the gym and we put in what we can. It's all relative to where you are in your workouts and the time you have to give to it.

When you did 2 mile runs, was that good enough for you? I'm doing 3 miles and I think I might go down to 2. That would put me at around 8-10 miles a week, minus what I do on the weekends. Just wondering if that covers your cardio enough.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

              Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE

I had never really been interested in working out or anything until a year ago. I started going to this small gym with my buddies and I really started to enjoy it. However, even after a year of working out my muscles hadn't really cut up yet due to my bad eating habits (soda & donuts ftw). My membership expired 2 months ago and I didn't bother renewing it because I was moving towns to a different university in August.

Well now it is August and I am a week away from moving and I plan on getting back into the routine of going to the gym at the university. I hate being 10x stronger than I look and I actually got pretty strong (maxed 220 on bench) but nobody would've ever guessed. What are some things other than eating right that I can add to my routine to help me with this?

For me it was. My diet was good at that time too, we maybe ate out twice a week. Also when I was lifting I took very short breaks in between sets (with the exception of deadlifts and squats). That adds a little bit of a cardio element to lifting.

Thanks Ill check it out. I read a study that said static stretching reduced cyclist leg power by 30%. Then I starting doing just dynamic stretches, it's been two days now and I'm not sure I fell much of a difference.

Stick with it. I notice a difference doing my A,B,C skips before running speed work but I've been doing it a while.

                          Cheat night last night!!!

Got all excited about my body fat measurement (4.4%), and ate a huge pile of french fries. Then, my stomach hurt the rest of the night That's a year and a half Paleo diet with consistent exercise....38 yrs old. Still weighing a solid 185. It works.

I wish I had enough self discipline to follow that diet, but I simply don't.

Ditto. I go by the rule of moderation, I let myself have things a few times a week but I just don't eat a ton of it. Like last night I had 3 cookies, in the past i would have had like 10. I like food too much to cut stuff completely out of my diet.

What method are you using to measure bf? 4.4 sounds inaccurate.
