Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE
Well my goal coming into this summer was to develop bigger arms, and all things considered I think I'm on the right track. Nothing amazing, but consider this time last year it would be hard to distinguish my arms from pencils... I've come a long way. Yes I was that pathetically skinny.
PS. Yes I know I'm cheating by pressing my arms against myself, and this is directly after a Tricep workout so I still have some of that post-workout pump effect going. But I need all the help I can get.
I'm a sticky skinny guy(6', 150)...always enjoyed cardio/running more than weights. I would really like to balance things out though and start working on my upper body and adding some size.
My main enemy right now is my own mind. Hard to bring myself to lifting weights around others at the gym as I feel they're all staring and making judgments lol. Gotta overcome that.Co-Commish of the OS Vets I & II

Me personally, I could care less about what others in the gym are doing. I'm just focused on me. Everyone has to start somewhere.Comment

Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE
While I'm not either, I want to be able to have free reigns without actually unnerving anybody or making them speak up. Sometimes I do something so prolonging/intense that I'm either sweating tremendously, or I have to take exasperated gasps and pace around just to get focused again. I don't want to do that at the gym.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE
How have you gone about building up your arms/upper body? Just strictly free weights?

Please overcome it. I started out just doing 105 bench at the gym and I'm now hitting 210 within 3 to 4 months. I see guys in there barely doing the bar and that's cool, as long as you are trying and you aren't messing around talking and taking up a machine/bench longer than you should.
In all honesty, if I were to judge someone, I would judge the quitters. I give people props who go in and works his/her tail off and are consistent. I see women, amputees, obese, skinny, old, high school kids go and get it and those people I won't ever judge if they are putting the work in.
Now if you are a person who has never lifted before, then I suggest working out with someone with experience or have a trainer teach you proper form of the exercise so you can make your workouts are efficient.Comment

I'd say I added some muscle mass mainly through Free Weights, but also through Body Weight Exercises (pull-ups, pushups) and changing my Diet.
Diet is going to be the key though, flat out I simply wasn't eating enough before hand. It doesn't really matter how hard you work out, if you don't eat enough you won't gain muscle. I'd have 3 sometimes even 2 meals a day, and not healthy either, and I would think that was enough. It wasn't until I started eating 6-7 times a day spread out that I started adding pounds. I incorporated a lot more Protein into my Diet: Chicken Breasts, Eggs, Fish, Beef... and Protein Shakes helped a TON.
You said you prefer Cardio.. if you want to gain some mass you will probably have to go a bit lighter on cardio and start doing some Compound lifts. The Squats, Deadlifts, and Benchpress are your best lifts to fill out. Start out light, but don't cheat yourself either try putting as much weight as you can comfortably do. Make it your goal to try and do 5 repetitions or until failure, in every set you do at the maximum weight you can handle. When you can do all 5 reps easily, and can do multiple sets with that weight than you need to increase your weight.
Within a few months you should start gaining some muscle as long as you're eating right, and lifting. Just make sure you're getting the proper rest in between lifting days.Last edited by Feared; 08-17-2012, 07:57 PM.Minnesota Vikings

Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE
I didn't really mean the physical safety of exercising drunk lol, more of less was talking about how the body would react to the exercise while the system is full of alcohol. I've noticed posts about what to eat before and after working out, and although really all I do is pushups and these curls with a gallon jug, I'm curious if it's worth it since I really only get the motivation when I'm drinking (which is often). For all I know, protein can't be properly metabolized in your system while exercising with a buzz or some ****.Wolverines Wings Same Old Lions Tigers Pistons Erika ChristensenComment

I also doubt you would be able to lift very much.Comment

Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE
This will probably be gone before most of you guys wake up, but it looks like GNC screwed up the price of their new protein. There is a free shipping code around, and it's buy 1 get one 1/2 off so you could get almost 10lbs of protein for $11.xx if they go ahead an honor this. Doubt they will though as people have been buying 10-20 tubs of it.
I went ahead and ordered 2 just in case.Fan of....

Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE
I'll spare you guys (and keep myself from getting banned), but boy, do I have an Ogre-sized bruise on my left buttocks from wiping out doing an overhead squat. Wife not only got the wipeout on video, but had to take a pic of the bruise once it formed. Covers almost the whole cheek! Awesome stuff. Remember guys: Life is full of failed reps. It's how you react to them that matters.

Sorry man, didn't see this until now was at work all day, but yeah I've been a Skinny guy (ectomorph) all my life.

Been going to the gym late at night this past week trying to get comfortable during the slow times. No real issues so far. I had developed a weights routine a few years ago that I just never stuck to for more than a couple months, so I jumped back into that for now.
Diet may end up being my biggest hurdle. Weighed myself a little while ago and I'm down 3 LBs right now from where I was a week ago which isn't good(6', 147 lbs), and that's with me skipping all cardio which is tough for me as that's the part of working out I really enjoy lol. 3000ish calories is probably what I need, but that gets expensive, especially if I try to make it a good 3000 calories.Co-Commish of the OS Vets I & II

Re: 2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE
Yeah food shopping is pricey, and can run you a high bill.
Try to look for deals, and go to places like Whole Foods Market, BJ's, Sams and buy in Bulk. You might find a whole large bag of Chicken breasts on sale, a lot of times they sell 24 count Eggs cheaper than you can get at grocery stores.
Look for calorie dense foods to help you reach your required intake like Peanut Butter, Avocado. Something pretty cool that my friends did that I started incorporating was when they had some Veggies like Carrots and Celery they would dip it in Peanut Butter to help get extra cals in.
Also look for some canned food, Canned Tuna, Beans are decent as long as they are not too high in sodium and shouldn't be that costly.Minnesota Vikings
