Cincinnati took the early lead in game two, 3-0 in the first inning before eventually losing, 4-3. Finally, Chicago took the early lead in game three, 4-0 though six before eventually losing in the 11th, 7-6.

Pitched a perfect game tonight with Casey Mize vs the Astros! He had no gas left in the tank when he came out for the 9th, but still got it done!

Cardinals take series from Marlins as NL Central stays tight

The Cardinals again missed out on a series sweep after losing the finale. The Cardinals beat the Marlins on Friday (6-4) and again Saturday (4-3 11 innings) before getting dominated on Sunday (17-2). Sunday saw Miles Mikolas again get absolutely destroyed on the mound giving up 8 runs on 6 hits in just an inning of work.

Friday and Saturday were dramatic as the Cardinals walked off both days. On Friday, it was a Willson Contreras grand slam in the 9th to walk it off 6-4 and Saturday is was Jose Azocar singling home Thomas Saggese in the 11th to win 4-3.

The bullpen was solid in the series except for John King giving up 7 runs but that was due to extended usage to help reduce the stress on the bullpen.

The Cardinals will now travel to San Diego for a 4 game series with the Padres as the month of June comes to a close. The NL Central remains tightly contested with the Cards, Brewers, Cubs, and Reds all within a game of each other.

              Cardinals release RHP Miles Mikolas

The Cardinals have released RHP Miles Mikolas on Monday. This comes a day after the 38 year old was lit up again on the mound, only pitching an inning. Mikolas was 2-9 on the year with a 7+ ERA and a WHIP near 2.

Mikolas was in the final year of his contract and the Cardinals will be on the hook for about $9MM should he go unclaimed which is expected.

The Cardinals have not made a corresponding move as of yet, to fill the vacant rotation spot or 40 man roster spot. There is growing belief the Cardinals will sign RHP Kyle Gibson who pitched well for the team last year before a shoulder injury ended his season in late July.

Context: this follows 24 consecutive scoreless innings

                Just one man’s opinion.

Cardinals acquire Elias Diaz from Braves

Trade season is just around the corner and we've seen some low and mid level trades thus far and the Cardinals have now joined the party.

The Cardinals have acquired C Elias Diaz from the Braves in exchange for OF Mike Antico.

The Cardinals have let it be known that they were searching for a backup catcher to Willson Contreras. Pedro Pages who earned that job out of Spring Training, has really underperformed hitting below .100 and struggling to keep runners from stealing bases. The Cardinals don't want to turn to Ivan Herrera as they are wanting him to stay in Memphis to earn regular at-bats and call games.

Their primary target was Carson Kelly but the Phillies refused to trade him. Next was another former Cardinal backstop in Andrew Knizner with the Rangers, but he just broke his hand is out for 6-8 weeks. Then Elias Diaz became available from the Braves after they acquired Kevin Parada from the Mets a day or two earlier.

The 35 year old Diaz is hitting .348 in limited plate appearances, is a vet, and has the arm to keep base runners from running around the bases.

Mike Antico was part of the 26 man roster for the Cardinals, but is expendable due to the depth the Cardinals have at the position. Plus the Cards wanted to bring Victor Scott back to the big leagues for his speed and defense, after the youngster hit .345 with 21 stolen bases in a brief stint in Memphis. The Braves are needing MLB caliber depth due to a host of injuries.

Obviously the Cardinals aren't done as they are definitely seeking pitching help. But this is one item checked off the list.

                      2024 Chicago Cubs 06/11-06/13

Overall Record:46-24 (1st NL Central/6.5 over St. Louis)

                      Game Results

                      Game 1
                      Rays-7
                      Cubs-1

                      Game 2
                      Cubs-5
                      Rays-2

                      Game 3
                      Rays-2
                      Cubs-1

Cubs lose series to Rays as offense struggles

The normally really good Chicago Cubs offense struggled a bit in their three game series versus Tampa as the Rays took the only 2024 meeting between the two, 2 games to 1.

The offensive struggles were the most glaring in game one. Drew Rasmussen started the game and was excellent as he allowed just two hits in seven innings of work. Even more impressive is he went 6.1 innings before he allowed a single hit. His chance at history was broken up in that seventh inning by a Cody Bellinger double. The Cubs still wouldnt score unitl the eighth when Ian Happ kept them from getting swept with a solo shot, his 12th on the season.

The Cubs pitcher, Javier Assad was really the complete opposite. The Rays scored five on him in the first three innings. In all, he allowed all seven Tampa runs as he took the loss.

Game two was better for Chicago although, Tampa did get out to the early lead again. Jameson Taillon allowed two runs, each coming via a single run scored in the first and second innings. The second inning run came from a their catcher, Rene Pinto (6th on the year). He also homered in game one.

It still took the Cubs a while to get going but did eventually as they scored two in the sixth inning. They later scored three in the ninth to avoid extra innings when Adbert Alzolay saved his 19th game of the year.

Game three did go into extra innings despite the Cubs being held to just three hits in the game. Aaron Civale was their starter while Shota Imanga started the game for the Cubbies.

The Cubs got two of their three hits in the first inning. Both were doubles first by Nick Madrigal and the second by Cody Bellinger as the Cubs took the early lead, 1-1.

Tampa got that run back in the third when their other catcher, Nick Meyer hit a double that knocked in Taylor Walls who had singled earlier in the inning.

Neither team would score again until the 10th inning. That team was not the Cubs. Tampa ended up walking it off after loading the bases and Randy Arozarena hitting a single into right field.

The Cubs will return home to face off against the second place Cardinals (39-30).

Cubs suffer their first big injury of 2024

Before game three against Tampa, a bench coach suggested that Nick Madrigal get a start as it had been a while. He did and it looked like a good choice. Madrigal led off the game with a bloop hit into leftfield that ended up turning into a double. The problem was that Madrigal didnt get up from his slide into second and instead, layed on the ground clutching his right knee. He was removed from the game with Nico Hoerner taking his spot. After the game, the Cubs learned that he suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. Twenty-Seven year old Jake Slaughter gets the call up for now and will take over the backup SS/2B role with the team. It is the first time slaughter has been called up to the big league club. He has also been a bench player in AAA but the Cubs want to leave their higher prospects in everyday roles in the minors for now.

That is Catcher Far, but tweaked to a Custom Camera. All I did was lower it so it's straight on with no tilt and zoom in until the bottom of the screen was just barely touching the chalk in the back of the batters box.

Cubbies take two of three against second place Cardinals

The Cubs won the first two games against the Cardinals, each by a single run.

The Majority of the Cubs runs in the series were from homeruns. Out of a total of six homeruns in game one, the Cubs had five of them. Seiya Suzuki and Patrick Wisdom but hit two (13,14 and 29,30) Christopher Morel also hit his 14th on the year.

Wisdom's second came in walk off fashion after Adbert Alzolay blew his unfortunate mlb leading 8th save of the year. Suzuki's homeruns broke a homerun drought of over a month with his last homer coming May 7th.

Ian Happ got the Cubs on the board first with his second inning two run HR (13). But, Brandon Crawford tied it in the third with his eighth of the season. Cody Bellinger hit his 14th on the year in the sixth and and a seventh inning Nico Hoerner rbi single brought the Cubs lead up to 4-3. That was until Matt Carpenter got into the homerun game in the eighth inning as he hit his sixth on the year to bring the score to 4-3.

Mark Leiter JR and Julian Merryweather finished the game out of the bullpen neither allowing a single runner to reach base as Merryweather got his 3rd save of the season after Alzolay pitched in the game prior.

Game three was a bad offensive performance by Chicago. St. Louis' starter Steven Matz dominated in his five innings of work as he allowed just one hit. That one hit was the Cubs lone run of the game on a Yan Gomes HR, his 7th.

Javier Assad was good as the Cubs starter but his stamina just isn't there. He also allowed just one hit but had to be pulled after just four innings. Jordan Wicks who has been good in his rookie season allowed three homeruns and four runs as St. Louis took the series finale, 5-1.

The Cubs will now enter a stretch where they will play the San Francisco Giants seven times in 11 days. The first series is a three game set with the Giants (33-39/4th NL West) coming to town.
