I'm currently 48-43 with the Orioles at the All Star Break.. I am 5 games back of the Yankees for the wild card, with the Red Sox out in front of the AL East by 8.5 games of the Bronx Bombers.
My offense has been pretty consistent in terms of power, but the surprise has been Brian Roberts. Roberts is only batting .269, with an OBP of .348, which is nullifying a lot of my power into solo home runs. The only thing keeping me afloat is being 2nd in the league with 136 home runs, led by Mark Reynold's 29, although he is batting a robust .243 with 106 strike outs in 334 at bats. I currently have 8 players with more than 10 round-trippers, with Matt Wieters (4) being the only exception. Vladimir Guerrero has continued his late career renassaince by batting .322 with 19 home runs, 24 doubles, and 58 RBIs.
Then comes the pitching. No starter has under a 4.02 ERA (Guthrie leads the team with that number, with Justin Duchscherer close behind him sporting a 4.12 ERA). The young staff has been inconsistent, as Jake Arrieta (6-7), Zach Britton (5-2), an Brian Matusz (3-6) have a combined 14-15 record. Duchscherer has been the standout at 9-3 and has looked more and more like the AL Comeback Player of the Year. Chris Tillman (currently at AAA Norfolk) has been knocking on the door, as has Rick VandenHurk (started the AAA All Star Game and is 9-6 with a 3.19 ERA). The bullpen, outside of the absolutely lights out Kevin Gregg (1.89 ERA, 32 saves) has been shaky. Each night I have to use more than 2 relievers, I know one of them is going to be off.
I have an offer from the White Sox on the table that would net me 1B/OF Dayan Viciendo, RHP Freddy Dolsi, and LHP Jhonny Nunez for RHP Kevin Gregg. It's a lot of talent, but only Nunez would be of any immediate impact as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen, and I am stuck between really pushing for the wild card or taking the trade and trying to find a few more pieces elsewhere.
